Tbs Finance Committee of the Oity Oonncll reported tut night edversely upon the petition •eking for «n appropriation to aid In completing tbe new Jewish Synagogue. Tho refnaal was baaed on tho fast that Oonnoil had no right to appropriate money to ehnroh bnildtagt, and If they were to grant thla petition every other church in iho city wonld have tho right to ask for an cqnai appropriation. This petition wee referred to tbe Finance Com mittee, which reported last night in favor of an appropriation of twenly-flve bnndred dollars, to be paid in monthly installments, whenover, in the opinion of tbe Mayor, tho finances of the oity will pormiL This action was expected of Conocll, and it will bo material aid to the Sis ters ia Ibeir work of meroy. Iwe Tnn Acer. Thieve* (aaght. When Brown A Co. awakened by tbe “crack 'o day" yesterday morning end oame down from their elegant chamber, they found the beck door of their counting room ajar. It is their custom to close end bolt their doors at night, and Ibis preoan tlon was taken as nenal the night before. Therefore, when they fannd the door standing partially open yesterday morning, they were indaoed to make some investigations, to see what other cartons thing might be dis covered. The lint thing looked into w» the money drawer, and this, with the exoeption of a few nickels, waa about aa bare aa it wee when it left the hands of the cabinet maker. Borne money wee left in the drawer tbe eight before. How mnoh was not known; bnt the bead of tbe firm supposed that there mnat have been at least forty dollars. The absence of this money re vealed the feet that tbe store bad been robbed; and the nex:questions were, how? and by whom ? There was where tbe pnrzle came in. The door had not been broken open. The windows had not been forced. Everything waa aa Board as It ever was; bnt tbe door was standing open. Tbe only nutation of the matter wea that aome acquainted with tbe premises had sneaked in daring tbe early part of the evening, con- oeaied himself in a closet under tbe stairway, and, waiting nntil the etore was vacant, com mitted the robbery. It did cot seem that the ibelt oonid have been oommitted in any other way. The next question was, by whom ? The mat ter was not canvassed very long before suspi cion rested upon a negro boy named Thad Al len, who for a long time has been In the em ploy of Brown A Oo. List week, however, Thad was discharged, and it waa suspected that be might hare adopted this means of baring venge for the lose of his situation. Early in tbe day Thad, accompanied by an other negro boy, named Bob. Toastin, were seen to enter Patzel’s store with the air of gen tlcmen of leisure who had money to spend. It was Tbad’s “treat,” and he called for sogers, bought three for a quarter, and the two de parted happy aa lords and pnfBng like yonng locomotives. Now, aa Thad was known to ont of business, and not in a financial condition to indulge himself and his friends in the taxnry of aegare, tbe suspicion was increased that he was enjoying his olium cum dig. at the expense of hia late employer! 1 . It was at last determined to arrest both Thad and hia cbnm. Accordingly the services of Lieutenant Harley were obtained and the arreBta made. The boys were taken to the lock-cp, bnt they stontly denied having stolen the money. They were separated and oonfined, and given a few hours to meditate npon the pecu' lianty of their situation. In tbe afternoon they seemed to have lost a little confidence in their own innocence, and later Tbad made a clean breast of it, and told where tbe money was. Harry Brown and Lieutenant Harley aooompa nied Thad to where he said he bad hid the money, and there foned $64 £0 in greenbacks and specie, all of wblohwasBtoien from Brown’s till. Among the specie was an English shilling, which was also recovered. How much the boys spent is not known, though it ia supposed that they had not made way with a great deal of Bnt another diaoovery was made while this case was being worked np. Oar readers will remember that»jme lime ago Havens' bar-room waa broken into and several boxes of segars were stolen. It torus ont that the boy Bab Toastin was tho thief in this case. Bab was formerly in the employ of Havens, and knew how to proceed abont atealing from him. None of Ihe segars, however, were recovered, Bob and Thad having smoked them. These two boys seem to have entered upon Tax largest end moot oompiete stock In tbe State, of cutlery, woodwara, tinware, and bouse- futniebing goods generally, suitable to the job bing trade. In bottles at 50 cents and 6L00 The Female College Appropriation, At the meeting of the Oity Oonnoil last night, after the reading of the mlnntes, Alderman Kahn moved that tho mlnntes of the last meet ing be approved except eo much of tbefi os re lated to the appropriation of fivo thousand dol lars to Wesleyan Femalo College. Alderman O. Burke moved that tbe mlnntes be approved ns read. The fetter motion was adopted by a largo majority. Later in the evening Aldorman Kahn moved that the appropriation to tho college, also the appropriation of $2,300 to the Sisters of Mercy, <0 aid in bnilding a homo for orphan children, be submitted ton voteof the people on the lGih of August, (ho day on which the election is to be held for alderman in tho Firat Ward. This motion received only two votes. Consequently this appropriation stands, and the College will get the money, as it should. It Is little enongh for the city lo do, and submit ting it to a vote of tbs people wonld be an en tirely needless formality to submit it to a vote. The sentiment of tbo people is deoidedly in favor of tho appropriation, at was testified to by tbe formidable petition which was before the Oity Oonnoii last week. Tbe New Orleans Hntnnl Insurance Com puny. The matter of insurance has attained to snch prominent importance in connection with busi ness of all kinds, that the peoplf no longer need any argument to convinoo them of the lm portanee of it. Tbe provident man jffovidea for hie family by means of a life policy, and provides for his own security by a policy in whieh he deems to be acms reliable fire com pany. Tbe man who neglects tLo-e is not re garded as a safe business man. The question of greatest importance, con nected with either fire or life insurance Is, what oompany is best likely to provide protection against loss? When a man makes an invest ment he dneirea to have a proper retnrn from It. It he enters into speenlation of any kind, be does ao with the hope that a profit may be derived. It he pnrehaae property of any kind, be does so behoving that it is worth what he pays for it. So, if he pays his money for a pol icy of insurance, he desires to be satisfied that the policy will be paid, provided loss of prop erty oeenrs by fire. Among the companies which are presented to the pnblio patronage, ia tbe old and reliable company tho name of which stands at the head of this paragraph. Speaking of this company the New Tork Spectator, an inmrenoe journal of great caution and reliability, says: The New Orleans insurance companies bear a high reputation for respectability, and, while they ara among the most conservative, they are among the mo it prosperous companies in the country. The New Orleans Uatuei Insurance Oompany last year earned $273,824 in preminms, and paid in loaves, expenses, etc., $176,S71, whieh left the peUey holders and stockholders a profit of $101,953. The company’s assets are $755,- 841. It waa organised aa far back as 1SI5, on tbe atock plan, with a capita! of $200,000. and was oa'ded the‘‘New Orleans Insurance Oom pany-" Under this form it continued to du business nntil 1:33. when the title of "Mntntt” waa added, and the stock was increased to $500 000, paid np. The business has always been conducted with conaervatiim, and the profits have been large. It does a fire, marine and river bnninesa, bnt each branch is managed separately, end on mntnai policies each is enti tled to its own profile. The President, Mr. Tuyea, is an underwriter of long experienoe and honorable record, end the directors ere among the most eminent oapiUluts of tbe Crescent Oity. This company has lately est afclishe J an agency In this city, under ths management of Mr. S M. Ferrer and H. L. Backns. These gentlemen are all the guaranties that are needed of the re liability of the company, end are a strong re- oommsedition for it to the tarot of the people. Tbey will undoubtedly ensure its snooeia in Maoon. One feature of the wcik these gentkmsn pro pose to do ia worthy a special note. They pro pose to make arrangements by which insurance on ootton can be obtained up to ten o'clock at Bight. This is for the convenience of ootton men who, being engrossed in bneineaa daring the day, may chance to forget the precaution of insurant*. To most cases of this kind, this arrangement is made. co-operative system of stealing, their ill gotten gains being their joint property. Both are now in jaiL Warrants will be issued to-day, and they will ba pnt into a fair way to secure an ap- prenticoahip with Grant, Alexander £ Co. ' BRIDAL PREVENT* A Handsome Testimonial. It being understood that yesterday was to be tbe wedding day of Mr. Ben j unin Burdick, Su perintendent of the Macon Cotton Factory, the operatives determined to make that tho occasion cf presenting to him some testimonial of their esteem. Mr. Burdick has boen in the factory continu ously for twenty years. Daring the past six teen years of that time he has held the respon sible and delioate position of Superintendent, Some of the present operatives have been with him all tbe time, and sums who are now opera tivos have been born and bred to tbe bnsicess since ho has been Superintendent. Their at tachment to him ia very great—they having for so long a time been aeciutomed to working under his direction, and they have learned to regard him more as a friend than aa an overseer or a task-master. It was very natural, then, that these people, most of whom are females, should desire to make some snbstantisl acknowledgment of their regard, especially aa another event was abont to take place, whiohwasto render the day one of more than nsnal importance in the life of Mr. Bnrdiok. The ceremony of presentation was appointed to take place at the faotory at twelve o'clock. Through the kindness of Col. J. E. Jones, Gen eral Agent of the Maoon Manufacturing Com psny, and OapL T. G. Holt, ona of the Direc tors, we had the pleaanre of being present. Soon after onr arrival, the operatives were all assembled In the machine shop, the most com- modiona apartment of the faotory, when the presentation tookplaoe. The service consisted of a beautiful silver water-pitcher, waiter and goblet. The presentation speech, at the solieitation of Col. Jones, was made by OapL T. G. Holt, who acquitted himself, as he always does on such ocoasions, very handsomely. He spoke very briefly, bnt very pointedly, saying nothing bnt tbe most agreeable things. In fact his speech was abont as handsome us the service was. In receiving it, Mr. Bordiek spoke very briefly. He tendered the donors his gratefcl acknowledgment; and showed by hia look that he felt conch more than he uttered. He ex cused himself from speaking by saying he had too mnch bnsicess on hand to think of making a speech. Tbe apology was deemed sufficient and he was excused. After thla little ceremony had ended, the op erativea crowded aroned Mr. Bardick to shake hands with him, congratulate him, bid him good-bye and bon teyage. At half.past six o'clock yesterday afternoon, Mr. Burdick was married to Miss Anna Brant ley. Only a few friends witnessed the cere mony, which took place at ths residence of the bride, on OakBlxeeL The con pie left last night by the Central Railroad for Savannah, whence they will take the steamer for a trip North to visit the parents and other relatives of Mr. Bar dick. Charleston—Arrived, Charleston, Belle Isle, Foam, F. G. Bussell. OBITUARY. Died, at Spalding, Macon county, Ga., on July 31, 1873, Mrs. Josephine M. Wesibrook, wife of Mr. E. W. Westbrook, of Sumter county, Ga., aged twenty-cine years and eight months. Id her death, a bright and happy little home has been wreathed in mourning, and a most devoted husband and affectionate little boy robbed of loviog wife and mother. She has left them to wan der alone through this valley of tears; and although her fair form is hidden in the silent chamber of death, she will often revisit them on the golden- tinted pinions of memory, and the tear of sorrow will be distilled from their hearts, that are now mourning disconsolate y over her premature grave. 8he was a kind and ministering spirit to her heart broken husband and child when dke&ee and sorrow clouded their brow; and when jay deigned to visit them, she, too, shared it with them. Bat alas! tho vase that contained the pure spirit has boon shat tered by the ruthless hand of death, and she now awaits her loved ones in the climes of never fading happinees and love. Sleep on, dear friend, uadis taibed ia thy celestial slumbers; for tbou art em balmed in the bosom and memory of friends who will chenah thee fondly, and only forget thee when life’s feverish dream is ended. Ferewell! fairest of earth’s flowers, a long farewell; and when the monuments of artistio grace and beauty, erected to the memory of othors, shall be forgotten in tbe busy walks of life, the remembrance of tby many amiable qualities as a wife, mother, sister, and friend, will rear itself as a ehining cenotaph in tbe halls of memory, and Borve as a beacon, to guide thy devoted husband and motherless boy safely o’er life's tempestuous eea.
