Th« text, aa Elder Clifford taya, “will be
fonnd atween tbe leds of tba Bible." Ton don’t
believe It ? No, I dare say yon don't believe it.
Few ever knew it and those that once knew have
forgotten. D.d yon ever hear a sermon from
that text? Did yon ever see a man who bad
beard a sermon from that text? Did yon ever
bear of a man who said be had seen a man who
bad beard a sermon from that text ? No 1 and
yon never will.
The fact la, there are denominational reasons
deal agin that text. Oar Presbyterian brethren,
tbv/ have not got fairly settled in the Prom.
f*ed I. ml yet. They have hardly crossed the
Jordan. They are «tlll fighting the Amalekf teg,
and tbe Hivitei, Parrix'tes, Hittltee and Jeb-
nsitse. They are (till “Jadytzinp,” as old Dr.
Pieroe «U* It; bnt when they get over into tbe
New Testament, there they will find this text—
eartln sure. Then a* to tbe Uethodist brethren,
wbst would tbe amen and glory corner say to
each s text as “Study to be qalet ?” Why, sir,
they woo'd say it was death to all religion.
And, If there were time, we might take all
tbe denominations seriatim and ebow that thU
text sren’d be like ginger in oblcken soup—it
wonld “spile the entire bllln’.” There are, now
and then, knots of beretloe eosttered about tbe
earth— Q takers, 8htkers and oneb like—who
have fonnd that text, and these are called tn
derision “qnietlsta.” Whenever yon eee them
yon mty know tbsm by tbelr clear skine, placid
eonntenancM and mellow accents—showing
that they are praotlclng and profiting by this
text For when a man stndiea to be qalet—to
restrain hi* appetite* and bis passions—bis tem
per—bis tongne, and move along noiselessly
nd hsrraonlonily In allhla social relation,, bis
pbysioal as well as hi* moral condition im
proves. There (a lass wear and tear npon him.
He le like a well-made steam engine in good
repair—he works smoothly, as well as power
fully, and therefore works without loss. Bat
one of yoar rickety old concerns which whoezos
and oUttora at every breath, while it may oan-
vsy a more vivid impression of power to a rus
tle or a savage, wastes its feeble energies while
living, and strides to final inactivity and death
sritb every puff.
Now we know it is very bud to “be quiet.'
and that le tbo reason why wo are told to ktudy
far that objeaL Yon will miss it often, and
And yourselves rampaging aronnd when yon
don’t mean to be. Old Adam will sometimes
get tbe upper Jjsnd in spite of yonreelves. Yon
may, sritb tbe boRt intention*, find yourself a
noisy, scolding housewife; a silly, giggling
maiden; alond and pretentions woman—fast
and fliaby. Yon may find yourself a fretful,
impatient man—litigious and quarrelsome.
Perhaps (though that is vary low indeed) yon
may degenerate Into a noisy bnlly. How many
bnllies there ere in every place, and they are
incurable nntil tamed by some quiet man. It
ia the quiet man who is a terrible fellow in a
pinch. It la easier to fight fonr bullies than
one qnlet man.
Worse than all this, if yon don’t resist tho
devil strongly, yon may even sink into that
standing nnivanoe—the so-called “lice man" in
tbe post-bellnm flash language of tba times.
That man la like pop oom in a bot skillet—be
bursting ont miscellaneously liko a pack of
Oblntso fire crackers and with as little good
pnrpoae. He zip* round and ronnd and back
and forth like a fiery serpent, in tbe noise and
etnokeof bis own empty vanity and self-glorifi
cation—with no better results and with aa per
fect Indiffarenoa whom he hlls or bestlnks with
fnlminationa. Tba true executive man ia never
fussy man, and never a “live man” as under
stood by the groundlings. Nolan and olap trap
are no pert of hi, programme. He never spends
bis breath or strength in ldlo sonnd or show.
When a man swells aud blasters and strata and
brags before the public, be aacnred bn is noth
ing more tban a bass drum in tbo social marie—
noisy, bnt hollow. Tbe man of energy and
power ia always a thinking and a qalet man,
and nasally a silent man.
Now perhaps it ia for want of preaching on
tbl* text, “ritndy to be qnlet,” that the world
has gono so ciazy for tho put ten years in the
matter of flub, foas, tawdry pretence, noise
and impudent assumption. Perhaps tbe world
wonld not be so far wrong if tbo boys nnd girls
had only been tanght that every artlele In this
▼nlgar catalogue is wholly inconsistent with
taste, elegance and attractiveness in the gentle
woman and evnry manly charocterlatio in Ibe
ruder sex. Bnt we cannot devote another line
to public reformation in thia partienlar this
morning.
A Fleas'ni Incident—Be Liberal
Year Psalsrr.
Tba beloved and Tenanted pastor of the In
dependent Presbyterian Charon In Savannah,
Kev. Dr. Arson, was recently captured bodily
by a coup dc main of his people, and sent, not
to Coventry, bnt to Bye Baaeh. It seems this
exemplary divine, though in failing health, and
moch worn by bis labors, had pets latently re-
fnasd to vacate hie pulpit this summer, and
seek the repoee so greatly needed. Erery effort
was exhausted in vain to induce him to do so,
when his devoted charge resorted to the follow
ing rose to achieve their objeet. Contrivicg to
entice tbe Doctor and bis wife away from home
on a given day, some of the ladies repaired
bis dwelling and persuaded a maid servant
pack np the wardrobe of the family. Upon re
turning home he was met there by a number of
his oorgregition, presented with a well filled
parse, and informed that every arrangement
had been made for his departure by the steamer
then about to sad. So earnest were the good
people, that tbelr worthy pastor, completely
overpowered by inch kindness and affection,
was forced to yield to their wishes, and they
bore him eff In trinmph to tbe dseta of the
steamer. He is now, with a grateful, tranquil
heart, enjoying the sal: air and baths of Bye
Beach, and we trust may be spared for many
years of continned usefulness.
The example of oar Savannah friends is
worthy of imitation everywhere. Nor should
the chmohea wait until their faithful ministers
are exhausted in’ mind and body, and almost un
fit for farther labor, before granting them that
respite from duty whioh should be accorded at
least for a few week i annually. We are all familiar
with tbe trito remark that a bent bow moat be
nmtrnng sometimes or lo3e Us elasticity. So
it ia with the everlasting routine of work.
There mast be timely cessations and seasons
of repose and reoreatlon, or tbe overtaxed men
tal and physical energies anoenmb nnder the
trying ordeal, and premature dooay and death
are the rennlL And he who faneies that the
dnties of tbe ministry are other than arduous
and wearing in the extreme, la greatly mistaken.
A lawyer, senator or popular leotnrer requires
weeks of previons natioe ere ha will adrentnre
to appear before an andienoe. But the min
ister of Christ ia required perforce to hare his
several pnlpit messages ready each Vitek, and ia
ever rnnnlng the gaontlet of pablio criticism,
both as to moral and mental qualifications,
single failure is as damaging to him aa to any
other; fceneo the necessity for profound and
oontinnons study, that be may be able to give
his bearers beaten oil in the sanctuary.
Then, too, mast be added tbe tremendous re
eponaibilitiea attaching to the sacred office, and
the outdoor work of a pastor whioh, at all times
considerable, becomes in seasons of calamity
and sickness well nigb overwhelming.
It iz safe, then, to oonoinde that no class of
men labor harder tban the taithfnl pastors of
cbnrcbce; and inasmuch as they spend and are
spent in tbe service of others, and enconnter
many privations in their Master's cause, anrely
they ahon'.d be dealt with liberally and tenderly
by tho people of their charge. Remember yonr
minister, lLcn, when wringing the programme
for your own summer pleasures and recreations,
and not only accord tus same privilege to him,
bnt see to it that the means are provided to en
able him to loave with a mind free from
earthly oares and embarrassments.
No oongregaticD aoting thus will be the losers
either io this world’s goods, or that spiritual
treasure which is beyond lha reach of thieves,
and whero neither moth nor rost doth oerrupt
An Uncommon “Experience!”
A New York Son reporter has been down to
“Knnkle’a Grove," near Rahway, New Jersey,
for the purpose of attending a colored Methodist
camp meeting. When there he fonnd seven
preachers bnt no hearers. They oonld not tell
“Jem what war de matter.” They had sent ont
handbills and advertisements, bnt without ef
fect. They bed alao seen red for the oeoasion
an especial star, hailing as “tbo Rev. Barrow
William Ford, the Blind Preacher, tbe World's
Wonder,” but tbe star twinkled to no pnrpoae.
Na body was there to see it. However, that
the sacrifice should not be total, “Rev. Barrow
William Ford" begged the reporter to listen solos
to an exhibition of his powers, to which having
oonsonted, the San representative waa har-
rangned for the apace of half an hour “on the
4th chapter and 15th verse of da Soeond Chronl-
oles : One sea and twelve oxen nnder it.”
Bnt the chief thing romarkahle about Rev.
Barrow William Ford was his rongh experience
in Augusta, Georgia, and the miraculous inter
position in bit behalf. This waa detailed in a
handbill posted aronnd the grounds, and ahonld
be copied in foil because it will be entirely new
ia Georgia:
TUB WONDER H EXPERIENCE.
I was born in Prinoe George’s oounty, Mary
land, September 15, 1S9G. At the age cf five
years I was taken from my pirent, and said to
Angnsta, Ga. There I remained nntil I waa
twenty fonr years old, when the Lord laid His
hand npon me and I was converted onto the
Lord, ia the cotton field, about twelve o’clock
noon.
In 1S59 they passed an oppressive law forbid-
dieg colored preachers from preaching, and for
preaching from the eleventh chapter of Daniel
and third Terse they attempted to hang me. I
was convicted in the oonrt honse in Angnsta,
6a-, then carried to jail, fed npon bread and
water for three week-, and had tbe pleasure to
see them erect a gallows to break my neck.
They placed a coffin In my cell over night. The
next morning about 9 o’clock I was brought ont
with the hangman’* cap about my head and the
coil of the hangman’s noose aronnd my neck.
I ate my breakfast on my ooffia. About 10
o’clock I marched np on the gallows. They
naked me if I bad anything to say. I answered,
“No; my communication is with my Father in
heaven.” When the time waa expire.! they sajd,
“It is time to hang the negro preacher. He
has violated enr law. He shall suffer for it. He
shall hang by the neck until he ia dead.
Wbi'e npon the gallows I stood, tbe Gcd
whom I serve delivered me. He breke the rope
the first time; then they fastened it on me
again, when I said, “Hear the beautiful poet:
“My God! the epring c fall my joys,
Tne life of my dslight—
The glories of nr brightest days,
And comfort of my night 1
“Fearlee* of hall and charily death,
Til break through every foe:
The wings cf love and arme of frith
hhril boar me cocquerer through.
Then said they,“We’U give him the last trial,
and if be does not die, we will let him go."
When tbe God I serve broke the rope off my
neck a third time, and I heard a voice saying,
“Loose him, and let him go 1"
Then aaid the high ahenff, “Loose him ! he
is free from lbs hand of death and the gallows.
Go, preach ihe Gospel while yon live, and pray
for all the cations."
Yoora respectfully,
Baaaow Wn.ms Foxn.

The Coronation of King Oscar.
Drontbelm (July 19) dispatch to the London News.
Tbs ooronntion of King Osoar has passed off
brilliantly. Tho orown and tbe regalia were
fetohed the evening before by the Chamberlains
and tUe banner of the Kingdom, nnder the
gnard of a hundred men. The Cathedral ires
tastefully decorated, the whole floor being oov-
ered with a crimson cloth.
The oortege left the palaoe at a quarter past
eleven, and proceeded towards the Cathedral.
A wooden platform covered with red cloth wsb
laid down in tho streets l ading to tbe edifioe.
Eioh side was lined with soldiers and bine jack
ets—tbe King being a sailor. First came two
Heralds, the chief members of tbe Coart, and
the members of the Ministry. Then followed
depntations from tbe Norwegian and Swedish
Parliaments. Tbe Royal cloak, sceptre, sword,
and crown were eaen separately borne on red
velvet cushion-. On* the right were Admiral
Knap, of the N irw.-g-.au Navy, and Col. Hoff.
On tbe left were Gen.-NatBier and the Chief
Hnntsman Biron Wedel.
The K-ng cam' next, in a pnrple cloak, aa a
Prince of tbe blood royal, tbo Oaamberlaina
holding his train. Bv tbe King's side was the
Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Over his
Majesty was a canopy osrried by eight high offi
cials. Ntx*. came tbe banner of the Kingdom,
borne by General Wergeland. Then Prinoe
Artbnr and bis staff, followed by tbe Knights of
tbe Orders of St. OUf, the Ssord, the North
Star, etc.
The Queen was tbe next to appear. Her
train was held by ladies of tbe Court, and on
each aide cf her waa one of the Ministers.
Other offlil&ls followed, aa welt as tba wives of
officers in the army and navy and the civil
oorpa, eta
On arriving at the Cathedral door the King
and Queen wore met by tbe B shop of Dron-
theim, who said: “May the Lird bless year
coming in and going our, for now and ever
more." Music played, tbe prooeasion advanced
np the nave, and the King seated himself on a
throne to the right of tba altar, the Qieen sit
ting on the left, each with their snite in attend
ance. Aronnd the altar were the Bishops and
clergy in tbeir robes. In the gallery above the
alter on the riebt were the foreign diplomats
andotfiuira. On the left the ladies. Tne crown
and the regalia were plaoed on tbe a'tar. The
aerrioe commenced by the Bishop of Dron-
thelm giving ont a psalm, whlob waa aung by
the ohoir, tne mnsio being very good. The
Bishop then preached an impressive sermon,
taking hia text from tbe 84th Psalm, 10th to
the 13:h verse. Then a clergyman chanted the
Litany, the responses being given by the ohoir.
More musio and singing followed. At the words,
“Take now tha Crown,” the King came forward
to tbe throne plaoed before the altar, with his
snite, and tbe prinoely cloak was changed for a
regal one. He koelf on the enshion and uncov
ered his chest. The Bishop of Drontheim
touched him on the forehead, breast, temple 0 ,
and vnata with oil from tbe Gold Horn of Sal
vation, saying, “Hay Gcd’* Spirit and Grace
ever watch over yon, and give yon wisdom of
tbonght and charity in yonr royal sottoos, there
by glorifying God’s holy name, and establish
ing troth and justice, and the people and coun
try's welfare."
The King returned to his seat, and the Min
ister of State took the crown from the altar, and
assisted by the Bishop plaoed it on the King's
head, sayiog a short prayer.
A herald now stepped forward In the oentre,
and raising his staff exolaimed, “Now King
Oscar tbe Seoond is King, him and no other.
Everybody answered, “Long live King Oscar
tha Second 1* Then followed a grand flourish
of trompeta, and a srinte of 112 gone. The King
locked wall, and bad a very dignified bearing.
After another psalm had been sang, he retained
to his place, bowing to the officials.
The two Ministers who conducted the Qieen
to church now came forward and led her to the
throne, her train being held by ladies of tbe
Court. Tbe same oeremony then took place,
excepting that aha was annotated merely on the
forhead and wrists.. After being crowned, the
herald proclaimed. “Now Sophia ia Queen of
Norwuy, her and no other.” There was a flunr-
Uh cf trumpet.;, ard tbe people cried, “Long
live the Queen!" Her Majesty returned to her
seat, and, after a few prayers and psalmt, tha
procerslon returned in the same order to the
Palace, the rcyal couple wearing their crowns
and insignia.
There is to be a grand d’nner at the Palace

slightly. Hia aooonnt ia substantially aa fol
lows: “The fire broke ont at 25 mi antes past
12 o’cluok, betwten Thorn-gut and Chatterton.
I waa in the pilot Lon ,a at tne time. A fireman
came and told me that the boat waa on fire br
io*. I immediately oame ont and fonnd the
dimes reached qnite to tbe hurricane deok and
the walking beam. I ihm saw that it wus im-
possible to get to the life boats, whioh were on
after quarters on each aide, to lower them,
though they were fall of passengers. I threw
water on the wheel ropes so as to keep her
steerage all right, and passed buckets of water
from below to the hnmeane deck for thia pur
pose, as I beoame satisfied there was no hope
of saving the vessel, and that tbe only ehanoe
to save the passengers waa to keep her golDg,
she heading for tbe beach. Tne boat reaohed
the beach in abont twelve or thirteen minutes
after tbe alarm waa given. In lea* than five
minntea after the alarm was given the fire was
in the rear of the pilot honse, and the engine
refused to work.
In abont half a mlnnte after she struck the
shore and tbs but ran a length before, abe
oome to a atop and grounded m less than five
feet of water from the bow. I rema.o-d on
the hnrrioane deck nntil the flime* had burnt
the window onrtam in my room, and tbe saloon
windows below were shooting forth finy darts.
I then oama down on the forward deck and did
what I oonld to save the passengers. A great
many were afraid to jump overboard. I as-
bared them they were safe in jumping, as the
water from the bow was not over their beads,
and npon thia a-tsuraooe one or two made a leap,
and many otbeis, seeing that the water was
shallow, followed their extmplo and were saved.
It w*s with diffion ty I obeoked them from
jumping over in large bcd.osand drowning eaoh
other daring tbe excitement. I am satisfied
that nearly all tbe lives lost were lost in the
stern of tha boat, the fl«mes moving that way,
and foroing tbe passengers to jump or be bnrnt.
Jast before I left tbe b -at, I near a lady, Mrs.
Taylor of Alcundria, crying for help from the
rear of the vca-toL I saw her hanging to the
middle obains end seut a boat to her and saved
her. I am asticfied tbe excitement caused undue
loo* of life, aDd tbit cVt-ry passenger was saved
who jumped overboard forward. A great many
live were Io;t on tbs lifeboats by being over
crowded, before tbe boat wss stopped. One of
them waa crowded with colored passengers, and
when she was ont loose the stern bnlged ont and
swamped the craft. About a di z in small chil
dren were aboard. I think five or eix were lost.
The fire oanght In the hold, bnt it is impose!
ble to tell joet where. Tbe boat waa very dry,
almost like tinder, and tbe fltmea, when they
struck the oiled moobinery, spread like a lorob.
The cargo wS9 of a miscellaneous natore and
oontained nothing Icflimmable except two bar
rels of whisky, which were on the forward holo,
and among tba last things bnrned. It waa en
tirely lost. Tne passenger list and manifest of
the vessel were lost, it being impossible for the
olerk to reach tbe cffice to obtain it. At the
time of the aooldent but few of tha passengers
were asleep and none in tbe state room*. Some
were lying down on the Bofas. Tbe Georgians
cams along on her way from Bsltimore and
brongbt np a few of the passengetB Many
went down tbrongh the oonntry and others are
awaiting other busts to come home. AU were
well taken care of. The ateamei’a value I esti
mate at $40,000.

TRIBUTE OF RESPECT.
Hall MccianicV Fire Compact, No. 4,
Macon, August 4,1873.
Once again it becomes our tad and painful duty
record the death of one of our most worthy and
respected members, Mr. Jomr D. Spbtnozh. aged
years, 10 months, and 12 days. None knew him
but to feel a deep and lasting friendship f jr bis
noble qualities as a friend and brother. It is, in
deed, hard to realize that he is no more. That we
friends and brothers will ever cherish a fond
remembrance of hia many virtues. B.o’her Ppringer
leaves a mother, sisters and brother, with whom we
sincerely sympathize in their sad bereavement, and
with whom we bow our heads and say, “O Lord,
Thy will be dene.”
Beeolved, That as a leken of rcepcct to our de
parted brother, the Hall of this company be draped
mourning for thirty days, and the nsual b&dge
cf mourning be worn by the members.
Beeolved, That tbe sympathies of this company
are tendered the relatives of our deceased brother
in their sad bereavement.
Beeolved, That a copy of these resolutions be
furnished to the relatives of deceased, and a?so a
copy to the Daily Telegraph and Messenger for
publication. Ibatatt h. Poole,
W. O. Hiliaed,
Asa F. Mathews,
Committee.
