It was cnnently reported on the streets last
night that K*ese Vann, who baa been serving
ont a soulenoe in tho chain gang, made an at
tempt to escape yesterday, and was shot and
killed by Mr. Oordell, who has charge of the
gang. Vann was among the earliest of the
Ooncty Court oonvicts, having been sentenced
for an aggravated oase of wife-whipping. We
made diligent inqniry upon the streets last
night, bnt could ascertain no positive confirma
tion of tho report; that it was generally cred
ited in the oity. A ooosin of Vane’s stated it as
a positive fact that he had attempted to escape,
and was fired at by Mr. Cordell and fell dead
instantly. His mother was also seen in a frenxy
of excitement and grief, bnt nothing oould bo
ascertained from her.

A Recreation In Nalnral History.
Tbe drummer, also, ia an essential hardship
By drummer wa do not moan aoy of that class
of originals who crowd railroad carl and popu
late popular taverns, each with a complete
mercantile establishment involved in the apace
of an ordinary traveling satchel. That class
of gentry are also said to be hardships in their
sphere; bnt as the periphery of their sphere
does not Include that brief spaoe of earth and
time in which we earn and eat onr beef and
oabbage, we eaonot speak advisedly of them.
We are not disposed to open a quarrel with
them for tbe wrongs they have done others.
Ho donbt they are already anffering nnder a
oonaoionaness of their own sins, and we intend
to leave them as special snhjeols for other bi-
ograpbers. Ho donbt the myriads of men
whom they have talked to death deserved the
fate which overtook them. At any rato it is
not onr quarrel.
We refer to the original drummer, and have
no hesitation in advancing him to the front
rank, alongside the accordeonist, and then will
let them loss a penny to decide which Is en
titled to the firat rank as a pecnliar hardship.
An able-bodied negro, behind a big bssi
drum Is a difficulty whioh few of ns can en-
oonnter with patience, or get over withont tbe
nse uf a little Quaker profanity. A negro will
perform more hard labor on a bass dram, for
nothing, than he will perform ia a ootton field
fora dollar a day.
He is as fall of Instinct as a thieving mangy
dog. If there Is a sick person in the oity for
whom tbo doctor prescribes the profonndest
qniet, he knows it instinctively and goes thither
with his dram. A favorite conservatory for his
kind of mnsie is in the neighborhood of a church
while prayer-meeting is going on. If there is a
night editor in the city who is endeavoring to
solve the mysterious hieroglyphics of the tele
graph operator, who does not know the d ffer-
enco between a lower case i and a capital Z, or,
if he does, does not exhibit the knowledge
through his manuscript—beneath that window
marches the drummer with a rub-a-dub-dab,
which would horrify a oongregation of scream
ing Amazonian monkeys.
We have never yet seen parapet} walls per
form their proper mission, and never will nntil
they buy one of these drummers—dram and
alL If the fates were only hair so propitious as
they shonid bo they would at least drop a brick
npon the head of one of these insatiate drum
mers and another through both heads of his
dram. But aooidenls seldom happen when and
where they onght to.
It Is not known who Invented drams, or for
wbat purpose they were invented. Ho donbt
the man who Invented them bnrned his letters
patent and then went ont and hanged himself,
all Ihrongh remorse at having brought so great
an evil npon his rsce. He deserves to be placed
in the aame category with the fellow who in
vented mnrder, arson, small-pox, acoordcons
aid dans. Though bis name be not known, his
memory should be held in perpetual execration.
Drams are aaid to be of Eastern origin. So
are the oholera and tbe Bbah of Persia and Mor
mon religion. The East seems to be prolific of
grievances; hence we say, let her doors remain
closed to the light and the steamships of civili
zation—especially if she claims to bo tho origi.
nator of bass drams. If the East did invent
drams no doubt she invonlod aocordeons also;
and that is enough to prevent all tbo connlries
of tho Eiat from establishing diplomatic rela
lions with peace-loving, civilized nations of the
earth.

Tbe gentlemen who compose this firm are
among the best known merchants in the State.
They have been in tbe business ever since they
were old enongh to go into business at all, and
their career has been a steady success from the
beginning nntil the present, and to-day their
house is not only one of the largest in the whole
Sooth, but one of the most reputable. Their
paper is just as good ts cash in Hew York, or
any other market, and in many instances it has
actually been preferred.
The honse In which they do business, sit

streets, is the only one in Maoon that is large
enongh to begin to meet their demand for

And now he, at his new plaoe of basinets,

Owe of Joe Hrfrnry's Practical Joliet
Joe McCrary, the notorious autocrat of War
rior district, who is now in the county jail amus
ing himself by picking duck-shot ont of his
missive frame work, has some reputation as a
practical joker. List winter when the Arkan
sas fever was taking ths negroes off faster than
ever sheep were taken off by the rot, Joe oanght
tbe infeoiion and determined to go. Accor
dingly be closed his haciendi, administered on
his own estate, collected what was due him,
and, with his family, came to town and an
nounced his determination to take the first train
to Arkansas. He bad not long to wait for X
train, and was not long in getting his family
Aboard. Having seen his wife and children
packed away in one of the crowded coaches,
Joe stepped ont to tell one of his friends good-
bye, and never went beck again. His family
went on to Arkansas, and he remained behind,
a forlorn graaa widower. Of oourse he was in
consolable ; but after sustaining his "mortal
anguish" for a week or ten days, oonsoled him
self by marrying another woman. Henee be

Jnilgo Win. Lnndy'i GIn-Honse Rnrncd
Just before one o’clock yesterday morning
Jndge Wo,. Lundy, whose farm is about seven
miles from Maoon, was startled by tho alarming
cry of fire. On going ont he discovered that his
gin-honse was on fire, and tbe flimes bad gained
each headway that be found it useless to at
tempt to save anything. In a short time his
gin-honse, gin, iron press, hoiss power, and
everything were in rains. He had the best gin-
honse within fifty miles of Macon. It was bniit
of tbe very best material, and was large enongh
to havo all his maohinery nnder the same roof.
The fire was, withont doubt, the work of an
incendiary, and though there may bo reasonable
gronnds for suspecting who was gniity of the
crime, there is not snffleient proof to warrant
the arrest of any one. It is a heavy blow npon
the Jndge, coming at the very season of the
year when tho property destroyed was likely
be of most nso to him.
Somo ono appears to have an eBpccial spite
at him. Hot long Bince his plantation was
visited in the night time and several hundred
pounds of iron stolen. Seme cf this, however,
he recovered from a junk shop in Maoon,
where it had been sold, probably by the men
who stole it. An anvil, which was of the lot,
was recovered from one of onr foundries, which
had bought it from the jnnk shop.
Tbe County Court.
His Honor, Jndge Weems, had rather an en
livening season of it yesterday morning, as he
had several cases to dispose of.
Tho first case was against Bill Hardison,
charged with carrying concealed weapons. Tho
ehsrgo was snstained, and the prisoner was
fined one hundred dollars and costs, in default
of whioh he will be consigned to the ebain-gang
eight months. In announcing the judgment of
the Court, the Jndge stated that the penalty in
this ease was as light as any he ahonld ever im
pose for similar offences.
Caroline Battle, tho auxiliary wife of Joe Me-
McCrary, was np for interlusivo conduct, and
fined soventy-five dollars sed costs, or eight
months in the chain gang. Her cloaing remark
was “d—n the chain gang; I can stand it as
long as any one else can.’’
Sarah Smith, colored, was found gniity of
keeping a disorderly honse and sentenced to
pay a fine of fifty dollars and costs or go to the
chain gang for six months.
Amanda Wood, alias Bass, white, was charged
with keeping a disorderly honse, bet the test!
mony was insufficient to oonrict.
Savannah Kose, not one of the blnshing kind,
was np for keeping a disorderly honse, bnt the
proof in her case waa insufficient, and she was
permitted to go on shedding her sweetness as
heretofore. Savannah Is a member of a family
of some former distinction in Maoon. She had
sister once who was the especial flame of the
noted negro filer named Parish, who fifed
around Maoon daring the war. Some of the
boys will remember how admirably he used to
play the lane of Old Hundred, ont beyond
Vinevillo every Saturday night. Those were
warm times for the old flfer, yet he endured
all for the woman of his choice.
Savannah is now tho only remnant of the
Bose family. She is a damaged Kose and some
what wilted; bnt she did not drop into the
dutches of the law on this occasion.
She’s the last Kose of Maoon,
Left fading alone.
All her Jolly companions
Are locked np or gone.
Tbe case of Bpenesr Hancock, charged with
famishing Joe MsCrary with the gun with
which he attempted to shoot the officers who
went to arrest him, was postponed nntil Mon
day, the prisoner being remanded to jiil in the
meantime.
Tho State was represented in the above eases
by CoL E. F. Bsat, who, by an arrangement
with the Connty Commissioners, is noting So
licitor for this court.
The parties were all defended l>y Mr. H. A
Harris, who conducted the cases with marked
ability, winning tbe approbation of the ooart
and members of the Bit who were present.
Mr. Harris has lately oome to Maoon from
Sparta, and this, we belieTe, is his firat appear-
anes in any of onr oonris.
Fonr warrants for the arrest of parties on the
charge of interlnaiveness, were issued yester
day, all of which originated in rather a novel
wsy. In both oases the female parties to the
criminality came np voluntarily and plead
guilty, in order to have thair men arrested and
forced to marry them. Both aaid they took up
with their men under promise of marriage; but
so far the men bad avoided taking permanent
vows npon themselves. The women adopt this
means cf bringing them to the altar or the halter.
Faost tbe experienoe with their Chemical
Fertilirer the past three seasons on all sorts of
crops Messrs. Hunt, Konkin A Lamar are in-
dnosd to get up a oompound especially for the
fall and winter crops. As this ia good and
