Tel' i ill & Messenger. WEDNESDAY MORNING. AUGUST 13. 1*73 A BUGLE BLAST FROM OHIO. Bn A Kinging Speech. 'i t. following it Ibe speech of Bon. 8. F. ■n taking the ch»ir at the late Ohio Dem- oerstto Stale CocTention: (7i’..'leMtn of the Contention—I appreciate Ibe compliment of haring been called npon | r; •, to orer the deliberationa of thia body. I» • recognition which aaanrea us of the geoer OO'- coLfl lenoe of the Democracy of Ohio. Wo have aiHemhlod to-dar aa a oonrention with a constituency. In everyeounty, In every townahip, in every achool di.lrict In thia broad Stale there ate hearta that beat In sympathy with the work of Lbia hour. [Appianse.] party la not a creation, it ie a growth. I not of to-day, bat of yesterday and to-morrow. It mart hare a relief—a creed, a pnrpoee, a destiny. It most arise In the necessities of the lime. Tilt re nroat te either a greet grievance to be ieJre».ed or a great principle to be eatab- liabed. The Democratic party la the outgrowth of that ferliog Cf wiae unity which the otdFed- era! party icaplred when it manifested a ten- dencysfor a centralized Government, and when it sympathized more with power than with the I-eople. With it the national question cf nmty ja baaed npon the Internal question of liberty. With it atatehood la civil freedom and central:- nation ia political despotism. It maintains that the State can only be pre- aerved in the integrity cf its own aeparale ex istence by a strict construction of the powera of the General Government, by the exercise of an enlightened patrioiiam, and by the cultivation of an enlarged spirit of nationality. It cherishes the faith of the fathers, and teaches fidelity to the Union—fidelity to the Constitution—fidelity to the rights of the Stales [applause]—fidelity to the rights of the citizen. It insists that the only way tomaintalntboGovernmeDtis through the State; the only way to preserve the Stale la throngh the citizen; the only way to protect the citizen is throngh equity and justice to all men. [Applause J In the Stale It is the party • of power against loo people; in tho Union it it the party of local self-government against con aolldatlon. Its teachings are so broad In their application, so hooeflceot in their influence, so oompri hensive in their patriotism that they em brace the whole oonntry. [Appianse. J With every Engiiab jurist and statesman from tbs first year of the reign of Edward III, when the Parliament of England reverted the attain der of tho Esri of Lancaster because he eonld have been tried by tho peoni of the realm, it has contended for the rights of the dlizan against arbitrary arrests. It stood forth in the fell glory cf Its manhood when tho supreme tribunal of tbo land vindicated its position by deoiating that when the oonrts are open it is a time of peace in judgment and in law. [Appianse.] Tbeao principles have not ootlivod llicir use fulness. Theywero born for the whole life of the nation—for tho whole day of liberty. They will maintain their vigor and powor so long as tho States have freo governments and the Union shall bo a republic. They will perish only with the Constitntion itself. It htR been well said that for moro than two generations of men this party largely mled the States and Nation, and bravely and honeatly mot every great qnestion of principle and policy wttbont onoo changing its name or striking ita oolnrs. [Appianse. ] It is tbo troth of history that when it no longer retained powor the ca lamities of civil war came npon the country, and tho scandal of the Credit Mobiller, and cor rupt and iniqniten' legislation dishonored the halls of Congress. It now demnnds in tho name of all tho peopio a thorough reform in govern mental affairs. It now demands peace and or der and stability of government in every part of the land, and adopts for its polioy the teach ings of history and philosophy by belioving with Edainnd Bailee that Providenco has decreed vexation to tyrants and poverty to rapine, and that by considering onr fellow oittzens in a hos- tUe light tbo whole body of tho Nation becomes leas dear to ns. That petty appeals to ns to-day for onr con- ildence, with Its long and giorlons history of tho better days of tho Uepnblio—with anciont and abiding love for onr freo lnetitnlions—with its oonlinned devotion to tbo principles of consti tutional liberty and tho privileges of tho citizen —with its faitbfnl ndberocco to tbo righls of the Rtalrs and tho maintenance of Federal au thority nndcr tho conciliation, and with ita teachings of patriotism and statesmanship that have contributed no much to national honor and material prosperity, and which can alone secure the blessings of good government. [Ap plause. ] Shall this grand old army, inspired by the memories of apiondid triumph and great aohlevomout, bound together by the recollec tions of trials and defeats suffered in common, animated by tho eonscloniuesa of jnslico and right and nltimato victory, abandon tbo field in tho very faco of tho enemy? ["No, no!"] Shall wo fold tho old war-worn flsgs with n hundred battles inscribed npon tbom when de feat was not lass honorable than anoerss, and put them away forever? ["No, no!"] Shall tbo dnat of tho arsenal gather npon tho dmms fc. - - - - ...— .... nia luug ion 7 [‘Tvo, no!"] Shall wo not answer tho bngle call when on every field. In otbordnjs, every man like tbo heron: of Trafalgar was fonnd ready to do his dnty? [Tromondons appianse.] The Old Gnard may die, but it can not sur render. [Appianse.] Let ns then call in every roernit—lot ns close np the column—let ns no longer waste time, bat inarch forward, and let ns. with stoat hearts and brave rcaolntion, and with an abiding faith, ohargo along tho whoto line, nndcr the same old liig, for tbo anlbority of inw, for tho pesco of onr State, and for tho happiness of our hemes. An OIiI-Fnihionctl Stage Bobbery. Sacramento Union, July 33 ] A lively sensation was created In the city yesterday by tho announcement that a stoge robbery had taken place in Nevada connty on Snndsy evonlng, which resulted in tho capture •>y tbo highwaymen cf a largo sum cf money. Although more than twenty-four hour* hsvl elapsed last evening since the robbery bat few points in the case had been received by tele* graph. Wo have, however, received from pri vate sources the following dotails: On the arri val of tho east-bound train from San Fraocisoo and tbts city at Colfax the stage f-tarted a* nsoa! for Graaa Valley and Nevada with o load of passengers and Wells, Fargo St Co.'s treas ure box. When opposite Sheet's ranch, about five miles this aide of Grass Valley, tbo stage oamo to n andilen halt. It was then about half past seven o'clock in the evening. Fonr men had suddenly stepped out from among tho rocks or bushes, each wearing a black mask, and levelling a double-barrelled shot-gun at the driver. Each was observed to carry a revolver in addition to hia gnu. The stage was driven by Bob Soott, who at drat demurred to the proposition to dismount. He was assured by ono of tho robbers that they meant business, and that there was no time to was(o in parley ing. Scott conclnded to dismount from hia seat. Two of the men stood at tho horaea* * heads, and tho other two paid their respects to the passenger*. At the suggestion of tho other highwaymen, and through tho persuasive power of a shot-gun on each side of tho stage, the passengers all vacated the stage. There were in all thirteen passengers. Among them were E. Black Ryan. and Judge McFarland, of this city, and Brigadier-General Charlos Cadw&lader, formerly of this city, but at present a resident of tho northern part of the State. We are also informed that Senator A. A. Sargent was among the number. Ho passed through this city on the train at noon, and it is reported was on the stago cn the oociuion referred to. Tho passenger* were di rected to sit down on the ground, ard were ar ranged in a row abont thirty feet frrm the stago. Tfie only weapon in the slage was a Deringer pistol in the pocket of General Cadwalader. That officer was too good a so?d:er to give battle under the circumstances, and did not expose his artillery to tho enemy. The horses were unhitched from the stage and taken a short dis tance from the spot; while one man guarded the passengers another held the howes, and the remaining two directed their attention to the treasure in the stage. It in aonoiiflj under- stood that of late years substantial iron chests are conatrr.c.el nnder the hind seats of all stages which are used to carry Wells, Fargo at Co.’s ex press matter. Tafs fact the robbers, of oonrse, koew, and they came fally prepared for the emer gency, having with them a snpply of both blast ing and giant powder. They ured both, and put in a blast which shivered the chest to pieces, knocking the lid throngh the top of the stage, and shuttering the stage in other re spects so as to almost destroy the body. It is reported that tho passengers, sitting on the ground in such cloee proximity to the stage, did not enjoy the fireworks very mneb, bat none of them were injured by the blast. The robbers cow found it easy to secure all the treasure in the box. Having removed it to a convenient distance they hitched np the horses and loaded np the passengers, and told the driver to drive on. The stage coved forward, and the highwaymen remained where they were unti: space and daikaeas hid them from view. The robbers secured $7,000 in coin, oonsigned to the banking bonse of T. Findley .1* Co., and several other turn* consigned to other parties in Grass Valley and Nevada. It is concede d by all that these additional sums amounted to $1,000, and some reporta place them as high aa $4,000. The total amount carried off was not less than and not more than $n 000. Thx Norfolk Journal, a very moderate Con servative paper, discussing the negro question as applicable to Virginia, aaya: "Originally and in hia native oharaeter, the negro was not to be feared. He wva humble, affectionate and perhaps even capable of devotion. But he ia also infirm, impressible and easily led astray. In the bands of political adventurers he has been roou’ded like wax to suit their own purpo ses, and by long habit, it ia to be feared, has ittoome permanently hardened Into a mere in strument of these corrupt and designing creat ures. There is matter in this for Virginians to oooaider. The vital oeoeflaity ia made painfully apparent of retaining power in their own hands. However remote it may be, we think with an involuntary shudder of the chance that, like the citizens of Louisiana, we may be expoeed to the mortification of asking terms of the negro, and of having them rejected with derision and in stil ta.” w. A. hupp, WHOLESALE DEALER J2T A Loso Branch correspondent writes: My feelings are capable of bearing up againtt I an ordinary amount of strain, bnt when they I are put to the teei of listening to a spooney couple making love every night for three weeks. I it ia more than an ordinary ainele young man ought to be expected to stand.
