Only a portion of tha students were present, owing to illness. Tbe exercises commenced at an early hour. I was surprised to meet with Bnoh n mnltitndo of peoplo in this spsrce- ly populated district of conntry, but I soon learned that several of the adjaoent counties bad representatives among tho crowd. The boys opened the cxerolses by rpcaking “Tho Sohool lloom" in ooncert; after which all tho sohool joined In Ringing, which was very melo dious. The reading t.y all tho boya was good; ihelr speeches woro ppirit-stirringand patriotic. Etch one tried to surpass tho other in his accu rate declamation, and all did well. I, espe cially, noticed two yonng Misaes, who were so brilliant and beautiful. Mira l-'annie B. Pettis and Miss Pauline Kitchens. They read their oaruys verv clearly and distinctly, and “Her Native Land” was read well. Tho sweot little Panlins won many admirers. Tan-p*, J.—A judgment was obtained against a party who died in tbe latter part of 1863, tealate, authorizing his executors to sell eitner public or privately certain of his farms. Tbe rmentors qualified in Deoember, 1863. Tbe judgment creditor soon after tbe qualification of the exeentors, urged them to sell theDegrocs on aooount of tbo near approach of the Federal army. Tho exeentors rofnaed, and hired ont most of tbo negroa for 1861, but on Iho 6th of Jnly, 1864, at the solieit&iion of tho creditors, plaintiff included, defendants consented that they might be levied on and sold. A levy was mado tbe next day on all the slaves, and they wore taken in enstody by tha sheriff.^ In a few days, on account of threatened raids by tne Federal forces, tho net-roes, by consent of the parties, were sent off by a mntnal agent. In a short lime they returned, but nothing further appears to havo been done with tbem by the sheriff or either of the parties. Held, That tho exeentors aro not liable to sncli levying creditor for not having sold the slaves prior to the lovy—it having been only seveo months from the timo of their qas.ifi. cation ns exeentors—and after the levy was made the negroes were in tho custody of tho law at the instance of the creditor. 2. A Letter front nor. MrEucry. Nxw Oar.xttw, Angnst 19.—la rosponso to oomuinnioaiious from citizons of Monroo a* to tbe proper coarse to be pnranod, regarding Louisiana aflaira, John McEuery writes a letter advising a Stale convention in Deoember nnd the appointment of n committee to appeal to Congress. After reviewing tbe Kellogg usur pation, McEnery says: “The present deplorable condition of Iiouiai ana demands for her resene from certain rnin tha adoption of one of two remedies: Either tbe reoona of her government from the ignor ance and corruption pervading olmost every de partment by the nnited action of the Intelli gent and honest people of the State; or an alter surrender of tho Stato to tbo Federal Gov ernment, trusting that the government may in- clients an homst home government that will spare tho people the confiscation of their prop, erty now gradually going on and oonseqnent inevitable bankrnptoy and rnin. To any ono edaonted in tha theory nnd genius of onr government, tho Utter alternative is hard to accept ; bnt any government promising a bettor fnturc, however irregularly InatUnted, is preferable to one promising certain im poverishment and general bankrnptcy. When u people fied themselves surrounded as wo aro by desperate and straitened circumstances, com- meroe decaying, agriculture demoralized, capi tal with mercurial wings in flight, real estate depressed and depreciated fifty per cent, since Kellogg's role, and in fact all values on the de- olme—all this in a State of boandles* resources, and simply and alone due to tbe fact of bad, dishonest, illegitimate government possessing neither the confidence ot the people at home or abroad—it Is natnrai that they will acoept relief from any hand that extends it, and will not atop to enquire aa to the regularity or irreg ularity of the authority exercised. But I hopo fate it not so imperious that we shall be driven to accept so desperate s remedy. Let ns hope better of those who hold onr destiny in their hands. Let ns appeal earnestly to Congress trusting that honorable body, casting aside ail polllioat prejudices and party rate, will do sim ple ja.tioo to a much wronged and injured people." General Hubert K. Lee. A writer in the liichmond Enquirer, Gen. Dabney H. Maury, corrects several errors that have appeared recently in the reviews of En glish Magazines of “Cooke’s Life of Lee,” and a review in the Standard of an article in the Edinourgh. We extract the following, which we regard as authentic, in regard to tho forces employed by Lee and Grant in the great battles from (Spotsylvania to Kichmond: “I: is well established by the Federal records that the losses of Grout, between the first .- .. nion with Lee's army and the defeat which he sustained at Gold Harbor, amounted to 123,000 men. Sainton nnd other careful historm-s sj • tote it The Edinburgh reviewer places the total losers of the army of the l’otomac at a much lower figure. While he states the num bers of the army of Northern Virginia at 70,- 000 effectives, we know that General Lee did not have .'-'.fit**- men on any one battie-fieid daring the campaign. “Again, the army of Grant at the Appomat tox la stated in tbe Kt-view at l.’.O ivm--that of l*e at 40,000. Whereas. General Leo himself assured the writer of this that on the 2d of April, 1893. his whole force of arms amounted to oniy 32,000, men, while Grant stated to General Lee that on the name date his effective force of arms Bombered no less than 220,000 men. “General Lee fnrther stated to ms that when he surrendered at Appomattox on the t'th of April, after seven dsya of hard marching, fight ing and starvation, he had only about fi. - effectives left to beer the btUle flags for the last timo of the grandest army which ever yet has upheld a righteous cause, and illustrated •he manhood of a noble race.” FR* FR- RL CH0L£RA, DYSENTERY, CHOLERA MORBUS, DIARRH(EA, AND ALL BOWEL COMPLAINTS, Cured and Prevented by Radway’s Ready Relief! It wilt be unwise to conclude from this that fall oats won't do. Oar own ex perience, and tbe best information we can get from all quarters is, that fall oats are the most certain crop of tbe two, and especially is tbi* true if they are planted on rich land, or if well fertilized. A plant well fed can resist cold jnst as an animal well fed ean do. Another safeguard against oold is to sow in drills and cover the reed in sneh manner as to fill tbe drills in part only, so that the yonng plants may come np in trenches below tbe gen eral surface, and have dirt gradually thrown npon them by the freezes. This may be ao- oomplished by running farrows with a scooter, as close together as can bo done witbont filling each other, pnttingoats and fertilizers in these, asdoovertDg by'rnnning a light harrow or brnsh acres* the farrows. Colton seed, Peruvian gnano, or sulphate of ammonia with superphos phate, are the best fertilizers for small grain, whero stable msnnro cannot be had.—SoutJiern Cultivator. O., for the past forty years well known to tho book publishers throughout tbe United Mates: New Iork, October 11, lb70. Dr . Radwat : Dear bir—I am induced by a senae of duty to tne suffering to make a brief atatemsnt of the working of yonr medicine on myself. For several years 1 had been affected with some trouble in the bladder and urinary organa, which some twelve months ago culminated in a most terribly afflicting disease, which the physicians all said was a spasmodic stricture in the oretha, aa also inflam mation of the kidneys and bladder, and gave u as their opinion that my age—78 years—would pre vent my ever getting radically cured. I had tried a number of physicians, and bed taken a large quanity of medicine, both alopathic and homeoe- pathic, but had got no relief. I had read of »stoh- lelnng cures having been made by your remedies; and some four months ago read a notice in the Fhiladelphia Saturday Evening Post of a cure hav ing been effected on a person uho had long been suffering a* I had been. I went right off and got some of each—your Sarsaparilhan Resolvent, Ready Belief, and Regulating Fill*—and com menced taking tbem. In three days 1 was greatly relieved, and now feel as well as ever.
