They know what amount of trade they command, and they know that their holiness this season will amonot to more than a million of dollars. They know the demands of the Southern trade, and hare bought a stock to meet its re quirements. Retail merchants can, at least, save freights and time by purchasing of them. Their slock is oomplete in every particular. Every depart ment is commensurate with the dignity of the entire establishment, and it is their purpose to keep i: so. Parties visiting Macon have not seen lha city until they shall have seen the interior of this vast eiiablishment. It gives a clear idea of what a metropolitan business is. Their long rows of counters, freighted with every species of goods belonging to the dry goods trade, con tain everything a retrail merchant, no matter how pretending, can want lo pnrehase. Mention was made yesterday of the theft of a trank and a lot of clothing from the room of Messrs. £1. D. Qjgnenin and E. D. Doncan. The robbery was perpetrated between nine and ten o'clock Friday night. Aa the train which left here at 11 o'clock was on its way to Columbus, a trank was observed on board beariog the name of Mr. Hoguenin. There was a negro on board who, when ap proached for hia ticket, said be had no money, but be had a trunk on board which they might take. He point-id ont the trnak beariog Mr. □uguenin'a came. This created suspicion, an. a watch was placed over the negro until the matter could be looked into. But the man who had bees ast to watch happened to turn hia head for a moment, when the negro, regard less of the fact that the train was tanning twenty miles an boar, cleared the oar at a bound and escaped. When tho train arrived at Geneva, a dispatch was sent to Mr. Hoguenin that his truck and elothing had been oapturel. When the train arrived here yesterday evening it brought them in. The trank had been broken open. It con tained nothing bat some old love letters and otbar college papers, and tho diamond ring The thief, in examining his booty, failed to dis cover tbo ring, and it was fonnd safe in tbe trank when returned. Our readers will remember that Some two months ago five oonvicts msde their escape from the chain gang. Ooo of those was a noted ne gro thief, who made it his principal bnsineaa to defame the illnatrions name of George Wash ington. He stole a lot of iron from the armory building, for which was ho prosecuted by Gen. Ivanon. His trial oame off at the last April term of the Superior Court, and he was convict ad and sentenced to twelve months’ aervioe ic the ehstn-gang. But ha made his escape, aa before listed, and for two months has been cheating the oonnty out of some labor whioh was honestly due it. Yesterday Mr. Wm, Foster, one of the Coun ty Coart bail St, saw Washington in a store on Cotton avenue. His appearance was consider ably changed ; bnt Fester thought he recog nized in him an old friend. He went np to him, laid his band on his shoulder, and asked : “Ain't your name George Washington ?” “No, atr,” was the reply ; “my name's Georgo Wil liam*.” “Well,’’-sard Foster, “I'll take you for George Washington, any how,” and forthwith marched him iff to jail. When they arrived at the jail and Washing ton was turned into his old cell, he found there one of hia old jail companions, who recognized him at once, and exolaimed, “Hello, George. What In the h—1 did yon let 'em catch yon for.” That remark knocked all tbe assurance out of George, and he at once became es meek as a little ebeep. It is now quite probable that shout a dozen months will be added to hia term of aervioe as a warning to other oonvicts who aaay seek to escape from tbe chain-gang. failed to make any other than a local reputation in that lint-. His Biz] and pro- igions strength give him unlimited license to pop his jokes bapbazird over the heads of peo- pio with an indiscrliuinatenees which would in- timidaio a less heroic person. True, he went back on bis apprenticeship and got married, but that does not alter tho proposition. Like other people he has his bates. His special aversion is artillery punch. Ho has been known to walk four blocks on! of his way to get around one, and be has succeeded in getting around half a dozen of them in the cameo of an afternoon. One day was so lato in getting to tbe otfiee that ho did not arriTO tilt (wo o’oiock next morning. Eis excuso was that tbe punch was bigger than nsn- aud it took him longer to get around it. Bat they know what they are about, aa there are ao The Court and a great crowd of people zs- aembled at the Oonrl-house yesterday morning, to hear the testimony in the case of L. B. Pike, charged with the murder of Carl F. Baer. The Superior Court room could not be had, .edit was finally determined that the investiga tion should proceed in Judge Weems’ offioe.— This arrangement effectually excluded the crowd of curiou] peaple who were eagerly in tent upon hearing the testimony. When everything was ready, Jadge Weems, one of the counsel for the prisoner, stated that they objected to the case being tried before Jn.tice Sprier. The objection was made under the following section of tbe code: The arresting officer shall carry tho prisoner before the most convenient and accessible judi cial effieer authorized to bear the os use, unless the prisoner shall desire otherwise, in which case, if there be no suspicion of improper mo tive, the arresting, rficer shall carry him before soma other judicial officer. Bat in no case haa a prisoner the right to seleot the officer before whom he shall be tried. The point was briefly argued by Cols. Lofton and Blount for ihe State, and Cob Hall for the prisoner. The point made by the former was that the time bad elapsed in which the prisoner could interpose this ob jection, as he had already been virtually bronght before Sprier,'that offi cer having isined tubp . oas for witnesses, and done everything else that was necessaty in ad vance of tbe examination. The counsel for the defense .1* ted that they had notified tbe arresting offioor on 'Thursday eve ning of their objection to coming before Jus tice Spricz, and had also notified Sprinz him self on Friday morning. They were willing to proceed before J ast ice Coxe alone, or before him, asaooiated with any other magistrate that oould be obtained. They were willing to go to trial before any other magistrate lo the coun ty, but not before Sprinz. Sprinz stated that nnder the oircumstanoea t* should doebne to ait in the oaae. He had ap plied to other magistrates to oome and ait with Coxe, but for various reasons they had all de clined. Fazsn Fisii.—Messrs.
