Horae r«cu Regard ng Ibe Murderer.
By reference to a npectal dispatch pnbliabed
elsewhere Ibla morning, It will be aeon that two
negroes have been arrested and confined In the
Albany jail on thochkrgo of murdering young
Johnson lest Thnrsday night One of the ne
groes, Henry Jackson, ha* made a confession,
bnt throws tho blame chiefly upon tho ether—
Je«*e Martin.
From parties who coma up ou the train yes
terday wo obtain confirmation of all tho atato-
monte in our special dispatch, and learn f either,
thU then is no doubt that Jackson la tho real
murderer of tho boy, and it was with some dif
ficulty tha I bo nsgroM were dissuaded from
taking Immediate eharg* of the execution of (ho
orimlnal.
Jackson ia a bad negro and baa boon in other
■orspes before. Some time ago he had an al
tercation with Mr. Dillard Strxdloy and gave tbo
later some aevero cu's. Ha was put into jail
for this cutting, but a young man of that coun
ty, went on hia bond. In order to obtain the
service! of tha negro. Tbo fellow did go to
work for the gentleman who had befriended
him, and behaved so well as to win tho ecnfl
dene* of his amployor. Ho succeeded so well
in the latter, that the gentleman, upon going eff
to get married, gave Jackran tha keys and left
him in posaeatlon of things. Yfhen the gentle
man returned bs found Jackson gone, aud with
him a watch, some olo'hing and other valuables
from tho heuie. Rightly snspoctlrg that
the follow was on hie way to Americas, some
gentleman got on a train and went to that city,
arriving there just in time lo ace tho negro
walking In on the railroad track, with a seek on
bis back containing the stolen goods.
ThU being the character of Jackson, it Unot
strange thU the people should regard him ea
the murderer of the ltd.

Mr Loci!: Apropos to tboenbjeotof weights
and measures, to which you refer in yonr col
umn to-day, I wish to ark if the fco dealers of
this city ever weigh tbo Ice they pell. Suppos
ing them to bo honest men, and their scales to
be oorrect, I cannot think they do. They must
guees at tbo weight, nnd my experience induces
me to think they aro Tory poor gnessers.
Now, Mr. Local, I thick when I send for Ice,
which is advertised to be sold at n cent and a
half a ponnd, I am asmnch en’ltled to tho fall,
honest value of my money ns if I send for beef,
or rloo. or sugar. If any trusting mortal who
sonde for five cents' worth of lee, hoping to get
About throe pounds (at l.J cents), over realizes
more than fifty per cent, on his expectations,
his is a more happy experience than has ever
fallen to the lot of the writer.
It Is too small a matter to raiso a row about,
and every one quietly submits to the imposi
tion. Bat others complain that (bs same ratio
of loss bolds in larger orders for family nse, It
being apparently too mnrh trcnblo to weigh out
tee except for those who buy enough to class as
wholesale dealers.
What right baa a merchant to cheat his ens
tomers is the weight of ice moro than in the
weight of any other article of trade ? Tho loss
is small, it ia true, bnt the principle is tho same.
If tbs ice dealer wishes to soil ice at three oenta
a pound let Irm anuonneothat as the price, and
give fair weight, or an approximation to it, and
Fit pay it willlrgly; bnt I do object to giving
ten cents for three pounds of ioe when it is ad
vertised for sale at a cent and a half a ponnd.
It ia true tha “a falsa balance is sd abomina
tion,” and the tale applies lo ics as well as to
anything else. Cold Wars.
