NEW ORLEANS (LA) CORRESPONDENCE
or' THE BANNER OF THE SOUTH.
New Orleans, Dec. 7th, 1868.
Uanner of (he South :
Our rejoicings were premature, when,
last month, we congratulated ourselves on
the subsidence of our traitor Scalawags-,
and the departure from our midst of the
last of our worse than Egyptian plagues,
the pestiferous Carpet-Baggers. Before
leaving us, these gentry kindly paved the
way for the triumphant entry among us
of their superiors, the Knights of the
Garrotte, Brass-knuckles, Skeleton keys,
Jimmy and Outsider, by passing an Act
of for their protection—
inflicting penalties on any officer who
should dare arrest these good people “on
suspicion,” or for the purpose of2>t'evcnt
incj their professional pursuits 1 Thus,
the hands of the police are tied, and they
must stand by and allow the robl>er or
murderer to consummate his mime before
they can dare arrest him !
Imagine what a Paradise the City now
is for the noble members of the Fancy,
for whom the aforembntioned immaculate
Law-makcrs(!) have thus so perfectly
played the part of pandering jaekalis. St.
Charles, Canal, and Common Streets are
ajready overflowing with the cremc-de-la
creme ot the newly-arrived gamblers,
pickpockets, thieves, <kc., and “still they
come” by every steamer, and by every
train of cars from the .North and West.
The police records show long lists of
daily and nightly crimes perpetrated by
these, the chosen friends of onr very
loyal legislators; and vetywe are happier
under this visitation than under the
regime ot their aforementioned more
villainous predecessors; because, these
fellows have something of a method in
their malpractices, and may be both an
ticipated and tracked therein; whereas,
‘ them fellers” are so slimy and tortuous
in their diabolical meanderings, as to lie
simply inscrutable.
During the late Presidential canvass,
some right severe comments were made
upon the nightly parades, the costly con
sumpiion ot coal-oil, and the extravagant,
expenditures in the getting up of the
hundreds of elegant banners, wreaths, &c.,
that were presented to the various Demo
cratic Clubs. Besides the general benefit
resulting from the circulation of all the
money required, at the time, for these dis
plays, the noble boys of our Southern
Democratic Army have known how to
evoke the proverbial charity of our people
by a public exhibition of those same
triumphant banners and emblems. The
happy idea originated with the Seymour
Knights, who have borrowed and gathered
together the Hags, etc., of all the Clubs
iin the City, which they have artistically
arranged around the walls and pillars of
| the Masonic Ilall. The display is not
only unique, but really beautiful, and at
tracts crowds of delighted spectators,
whose contributions at the door and iv
iresumcnt (abb s, will add many an un
expected com tort to the various Orphan
Asylums ot tne City during the holidays.
The presence here of tne Bishops of
this Province, has added much solemnity
to the Noveuas of the Immaculate Con
ception, which are being offered in all
of our Churches To-morrow evenin' 1 ’
there will, doubtless, be a crowded aud?-
ence at St. Theresa’s, to hear the eloquent
Lecture of the beloved Bishop Elder, of
Natchez, ou the “Lite and Times of
Bishop Plunkett.” So great K the popu
larity ot the Eight Reverend lecturer it
is safe to predict the disappointment' of
hundreds of late comers who will tail to'
Wain entrance.
By the way, your legion of Banner
readers here, are impatiently awaiting the
expected visit and Lectures of your own
Reverend Editor. How long, O ! how
long, must we wait.
Your expectant
Southern Radical.
