EARLY RISING.
Buffort rose always with the sun. and he
used often to tell by what means he had
accustomed himself to get out of bed so early.
“In my youth,’’ said he, “I was very fond oi
sleep; it robbed me of a great deal of my time.
but my poor Joseph (his domestic) was oi
great service in enabling me to overcome it.
1 promised to give Joseph a crown every time
that he could make me get up at six. The
next morning he did not tail to awake and
torment me; Dut he received only abuse. The
day after he did the same, with no better suc
cess, and I was obliged at noon to confess
that I had lost my time. I told him, that he
did not know how to manage his business;
that he ought to think of my promise and not
to mind mv threats. The day following he
employed force; I begged for indulgence, I bid
him begone, I stormed but Joseph persisted.
I was therefore obliged to comply, and he was
rewarded every day for the abuse which he
suffered at the moment I awoke, by thanks ac
companied with a crown, which he recieved
about an hour after. Yes, lam indebted to
poor Joseph for ten or a dozen of the volumes
of my work.”
WOMAN.
That venerable people—the ancients to
those whom we call the ancients—the wise
Egyptians, in the disposition which they allot
ted to the genders of their nouns, paid a sin
gular and delicate compliment to the fair sex.
In the four elements, begining with water,
they appointed the ocean, as a rough boiste
rous existence, to the male sex; but streams
and fountains they left to the more gentle fe
males. As to earth, they made rocks and
stones male; hut arable and meadow lands fe
male. Air they divided thus: to the. mascu
line gender, rough winds and hurricanes of
every kind; to the female the sky and the
zephyrs. Fire, when of a consuming nature,
they made male, but artificial and harmless
flames they rendered feminine.
DEGRADATION OF A DEGREE.

Listen, an old inhabitant of Wenslydale,
“why do you call Mr. , doctor , when
he has no title to such appellation % he is
only a quack!”—“Why,” said Sally, “I’ll

EARLY COPIES!
By a late arrangement with the British Publishers
of Blackwood’s Magazine, early sheets of that work
will be forwarded to this country, so as to insure the
receipt by American subscribers of the entire number

use of by other American publishers. This will make
the work far more desirable than heretofore, and it is
hoped will lead to an increase of the sales sufficient to

PROSPECTUS
OF THE
SOUTHERN LITERARY GAZETTE.
A WEEKLY JOURNAL, COMMENCED IN ATHENS, GEO.
ON SATURDAY THE 13TH OF MAY.
EDITED BY WM. C. RICHARDS.
THERE is not, south of the Potomac, a single
Journal whose sole object is to develope and
foster literary taste and talent in the South ; and this
fact is certainly a sufficient reason for an earnest at
tempt to establish such a journal. The failure of
previous efforts cannot be regarded by the intelligent
mind as an argument against such an attempt. Those
failures may have been, and probably were, the re
sult of circumstances no longer existing The need
of such an organ in our midst, is so universally ac
knowledged, that not to attempt to supply the defi
ciency, would indicate a disregard of the signs of the
times scarcely more surprising than inexcusable.
The progress of the age, and the rapid advance of
the South in Commerce, Manufactures, and Internal
Improvements, imperatively demand a correspond
ing advance in literature. To aid in this great ob
ject, he has established a Weekly Journal at the seat
of the University of Georgia and rallied around it
the best writers of the South.
The Editor is assured of the support of his able
coadjutors in the Orion Magazine, and also of much
other assistance from the most prominent writers of
the South. The Gazette is made up of matter both
original and selected ; and comprises Tales, Essays,.
Sketches of Travel, Poetry, Criticisms, and a Gener
al Miscellany of information in all departments of
Literature, Art and Science. Particular attention is
given to Scientific and Practical Mechanics.
In Mechanical execution it is surpassed by no con
temporary, and the aid of the fine arts will not be
wanting to enhance its attractions. Portraits of South
ern writers. and pictures of Southern Life and Scene
ry w.ill be presented.
The Editor confidently appeals to the friends of
Literature in the South; and lie is happy to announce
that his enterprise is of uo doubtful issue. By pri
vate effort a large and generous list has been obtain
ed, and upwards ol One Thousand Subscribers
have pledged their support to the paper. Until this
was accomplished, the editor was unwilling to pub
lish his Journal, but it is now given to the public with
the unequivocal assurance that it shall he permanent.
