COC.MIL PROCEEDINGS! Public Meeting !!! At a Regular Meeting of tho Mayor and Council of tho City of Griffin, held at Chambers, July 23d, 1866, the fol lowing preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted : The Mayor aud Council of the city of Griffin, have witnessed with regret the increasing disorder of our community, growing out of tho leiieved wanton and malignant violations of the legal and social rights of our c'tizens, both white and black, by Mr. J. Clnrke Swayze, Agent of tho Freedmen’s Bureau at this place. Whether it be true or false, our people believe that lie glories in tho op portunity afforded him to glut a person al grudge upon the community in his official character. His association with ns as a warm supporter of the Southern cause until late in lto3, and the subse quent indignities offered him, not by our citizens, but fay the invalid soldiery who happened to be here, to a certain extent warrant this belief. Be it therefore resoloed by the Mayor and Council of the City of Griffin, That the citizens be requested to meet cn masse, at the Council Chamber, at 2 o’clock, p. m., to-morrow to see if means may not be adopted to procure, by the appointment of Geu. Tilson, a rnoro ac ceptable agent than the said J. Clarke Swayze. AH the United Siatos author ities’hcie, and especially Capt. Ehlers, who, though comparatively a stranger, our community has respeet for, as aa intelligent and fair minded gentleman, are requested to attend said citizons’ meeting. Resolved, That the Tri weekly Star he requested to publish the foregoing in its morning issue. CHARLESTON MARKET. From ,T. U BAtiGK!T <t- CO.* (Factors, Charleston. 8. C.)
