Co*ri»CAfwm.—The following is a a Radical broadside against it, from the CUmro Tribune, Nov. 2., a radical t>iper: ■ J Mr. Theddeus Steven# theaters to re new his efforts to secure the eor.fiscation of the property of a certain class in the South ; and we hope that, when he bring* forward his oi.itiuu, it may be promptly and effectually 'squelched.— The Sooth umot already poverty-strick en, but absolutely beggared. Let our readers imagine what the condition of the loyal States would be if all our na tions 1 securities, now in the hands if the people, were made suddenly worth less ; if the bonds of the individual States were reduced in value one-half, tttid made unsaleable at almost any price; if the bank circulation were caused to suddenly disappear ; if the greenbacks were wiped out like pencil marks, by a damp sponge ; if the nineteeri-twen. tieiha of the manufacturing machinery were destroyed ; if three-fourths of the domestio animals were killed off; if half of the household furniture, conveni ences and utensil* were broken up; if half of the young men in the country were slain; if the labor system, such as we have enjoyed, word utterly up turned ; if all public nod private credit •ere an fardestroyed that no State could borrow a dollar, and no loan could buy lor bis note a bushel if corn ; if iu a word, out of ail our form er wealth nothing but weedy land and a heritage of disorder remained—itu seine the loyal States, wo say. so redao cd, and wo have a picture of what the South ia to-day 1 if it wore possible to add to the disiu hilltie* of a people already so poor in all that constitutes wealtti ; if thorn were no such thing in thowconomy of God or man ns tho forgiveness of sins, if it were possible, even, to punish six millions of people by the in.position of the penAties that may be fitted to an individual— wliat, we ask, would Mr. Steveua ac complish by the incorporation of his proposal into law? Will he increase the average loyalty of the people to the Government of the United States by taming them out of thehomeß in which they now barely subsist? Will tho productive industry of tho South bo ins creased by new obstacles in the way of tilling her fields 7 Will harmony be twean the unreconciled sections be pro moted by this now and potent oadse of estrangement and hate ? No, Mr. Ste vens, no ! lint suppose the public good and the demands of justice tna lo confis cation even remotely justifiable, how would wo proceed ? Who will buy the property thnt Mr. Stevens proposes that the Marshal rosy take? The negroes have nothing ; the whites have nothing; there is no emigration Southward—in the condition of affairs created by this measure there could be no emigration.— Where, thon, is the market for the con fiscated estates ? Is there so little land in this broad conntry that Northern men will go South to buy property that cirriel with it an entail of irreconcila ble hate and possibly of blood ? Are Europeans so lavish of their lives thut they covet homes that cun he at the most hut insecurely held by p'rpetual vigilance and tho repeating rifle ? Arc there any people, anywhere, who long ' for the state of society that genoral or partial confiscation iu the South would create—for tho wayside assassinations of intruding landlords, for retaliatory measures directed against ejected own ers, for the bitter feuds nud animosities that would end only in the death of 'banishment of those who aro parties thereto. Or docs the government— stepping out of its legitimoto functions —desire to be the great landlord and lesser of half the real estate in a do ma n on which an empire might be founded, having always an army of de pendents ready to Jo its will. These nre only interrogative sugges tions, but they point out in u general way, the objections that we hold to he valid against the whole confiscation scheme; and we are cure they will strike our readers as forcibly ns they huve imprassed us ; aud, having con sidered them, they will agree with the ablest thinkers and wisest statesmen of our party, that confiscation would be a cruelty for which no necessity has yet arisen—for which none will aris^ Thi Elections in Jones. —A corres pondent of tho Macon Telegraph, writ ing from Clinton, Ga., Nov. 4th, says: “The polls closed hero on Saturday evening, after five day’s election, the result of which was 034 votes cast, all for a Convention and 'relief; and be it said to the honor of Jonea county, that no white man voted. "The whole affair has, to my mind, been very strangely und shamefully conducted the orders from Gen. Pope— if I understand them—required the managers to take tho test oath, which they refused to do, und did not take it. One of the Registrars, and a candidate also, officiated during the first day’s election, and he, together with anoth er candidate, kept the lists of voters du ring tho greator part of the day, and instructed the managers to disregard the list of registered 1 voters, and the voters were polled without reference thereto.— Tho hooks of registration were open, and persons (Radicals of course) were allowed to register and vote during tho elesuiou. Several were allowed to vote •ho were under twentysono years of age, and no doubt many more, unknown, did tho same thing. Some sow of the oolored persons did not vote, while soino of the nitre Radicals, of their col or, are much exasperated thereat, and nre collecting their names to forward to General Pope, because they have dared to exercise their right under the Uncon stitutional - Reconstruction - Shei m an- Shellab&rger bill, to veto as they pleas ed. “These, Messrs. Editors, nre faotsthnt can bo proven by substantial testimony, and are not written by me through ma lice or envy, but that the world.may know the frauds practiced by those who would sell their country for money.” JOB Printing of every description ext touted to good style at this Office.
