KILLING OF GEO. W. ASHBURN. From the Columbus Eoq-i ; ro April Ist. Our citizens were greatly startled on Monday night -and yesterday morning, by tbe news that Geo. W. Ashburn had been > n th# house in which he. was living,; inf tho ppper pa/t of Ogle thorpo street, by a body of men in dis guise. Tho. killing occurred between twelve and one o’clock Monday night. The shots fired were hear'd by a number of persons living in the neighborhood ; the men who committed the deed were seen on tlie streets by one or fw% per sons; and she tragedy was witnessed by several persons in and about tho house, vet there seems to bo no' evidence Clear ly implicating any one in the nffiir. — Ashhurn was shot in The head, thigh, and foot or ankle, and other shots, it is said, passed through hiR clothes. He must hnve been killed immediately.— Toe shots were evidently tired from pis tols. Thero are n varir-y of rumors, nod. several wild conjectures os to the char acter of the partici who committed the outrage us aecd. A coroner’s inquest was held yesterday 'ok tho iumso of the killing, which, we understand, was at tended by the' Mayor (if tbs ditv and the commandant of the IVo under sttitid, that nccordnig 1 1 the’statement* of neg'iies in the house, a party of masked or disguised me t. whose num ber they variously estimate from fifteen to thirty or forty, came to the house nt the hour above named and demanded admission. This was refused, and they then proceeded to break into the house, having nostedtliemsolvi-s at. both doors. When they c Hooted an" entrance. Asli hurn was standing near his tied with a pistol in his hand, 'kb# won immedi ately e'vhmeneed shoofigg at him with pistols, anil quickly dispatched Inin, Ashburn, it is said, not. tiring. It was reported yesterday that a ?jegro woman living in the houso had‘stated that she leeogoized one di the.men, Whose ihask had fallen off, naming :i mint respecta ble and orderly young,g«;ifcimin of Co lumbus. But we learn that on exami nation at the inque-t she denied making made suoh a.gtati'men l ’. aid said that she could not identify thfe man. No one acquainted with tho young gem, 1 man believed for a moment that ho was concern ed' in tlui affair. A negro ihan testified, that s«w one of the men in tbe alley between the house of the tr.gedy and the next one, without a mask, and that iho knew him. As this cliaTge m.tv also be disapproved, we will not vet publish the name of tho man im plicated. The verdict of the coroner’s jury was tint G. \V. Ashburn was kill ed by parti •* unknown. There are, as we have rtiid above, a variety of conjectures nre to the cause of this shocking affair and the character of the parses by whom it was committed. The deceased was a fomenter of discord ami a tuna of strife. He was obnox ious to the white people of this city not merely on account us his disorganizing political course, which had been greatly instrumental in creating aod keeping alive hgd feelings between the two races, but becstt-« oh hiasocial habits. The first presumption, thorelore, was that the poUiiual opponents bad compassed his death. But thiire are man y nM it its said ono or more whit* Radicals, who do not believe this. That he was in an gry collision with *om» of his own par ty is well understood, and it was repor-' ted yesterday afternoon that one of his poJHiual friends had been arrested be cause of threats he had been heard to utter ngainst Ashburn. The personal difficulties of the deceased in this city had been many, but it cannot be credited that from any one of tiiese sprang the animosity that put so tragic au end to his sti ruiy life. Ashburn was considered the chief or ganizer of tho black R idioal party of Ge.ug a. His influence over the negroes was great, nnd there was considerable' excitement among this class of the pops u ation qn account of hi- bloody death. We are glad to say, however, that we hoard of no violent deni mstmtions by any of them. We hope that, like good citizens, they have c ine to the sensible conelu-ion to await patiently the inves tigations of the proper authorities, and to aid in upholding the laws, relying upon them to enforce justice without partiality or favor, fST flPKflfctL NOTICES-.AIHI F.MJtT COff- JlKNTß.—Vlckfbtirz, Ml—., Aiurn.it 9, 186 A— Dr. John Bull—tlcst Rlr: I am happy to ujatis In’ you that I have inert ynnr valuable C'ertron Hitters with trreut benefit to mi self, In general liability nnd prostration of my system, produced by the un healthy and miasmatic inSueneo of the Mlsainip- , pi Jltvsr nronnd Vleßafcurg I sonflilsntly recom mend Its use to nil persons who are exposed to un healthy climates.
