A MORAL LECTURE
ADDRESSED TO H» nUOW4HBH»,
BY TUI MY. UIXIZU KNCCXUtDOWN.
Fellow Sinneri :—Oar first pa
rents, who, as 70a are aware,
owned the whole earth all to one
stick of timber, dickered off the hap-
} tineas of unborn millions for a
ew apples, and awtul soar at that.
Nothing they ought to hare de
sired was wanting, but they
couldn’t lire without a dicker, and
so when Satan, disguised as a Yan
kee peddler, came along with his
infernal apple-cart, they were
green enough to patronize him.—
It wasn’t the fair thing on either
side; for if it was mean in Satan to
try to'circumvent the young peo
ple, it was equally dishonorable in
them to swap away your happiness
and mine for their own sensual
gratification.
That was the first tell, and ever
since bargain and sale have been
the order of the day. From that
time to this, matters hare been
getting worse and worse, until at
last there’s nothing that some folks
won’t sell, if they have the oppor
tunity, from their souls and con
sciences and their country’s inter
ests, down to a blank in a burst
up lottery.
Fellow-transgressors, I’m going
to bring this home to your busi
ness and bosoms. You musn’t
think to excuse your sins by fath
ering them on the early settlers in
Paradise. It may be said in their
favor that they did not know what
sin was, and were curious to find
out. But you are too intimately
acquainted with every kind of dev*
ilment to have any curiosity on
the subject.
Again; after Adam and Eve
had lost their preemption rights in
Eden, and had squatted in the
wilderness, they repented and tri
ed to set a good example to their
family. Can you say as much?
Guess not, as a general thing.—
And yet an unknown number of
ministers are continually employed
—regardless of expense—in at
tempting, but I regret to say with
out success, to preach the devil
out of you.
Cast your eyes about you and
observe what your fellow-sinners
are driving ac. Look towards
Washington and you’ll see mem
bers of the assembled wisdom lay
ing their headß in the lap of Deli
lah, and selling their influence for
the same kind of favors that Sam
son received for his hair. Squint
down Wall street, through a re
flecting telescope, from the spire of
Trinity Church, and if you happen
to see a perfectly honest man there
Eass the word to Barnum, and
e’ll engage the prodigy at once.
Look at the daily papers and no
tice what a devil's hash of swind
ling, theiving, seduction, murder,
perjuryj and other ungodly ingre
dients are served up at breakfast
every morning. Find out the saints
that own rum-holes, temples dedi
cated to debauchery, and let a list
of them be read in the churches,
and if it doesn’t make the rich
members squirm on their damask
cushions, brass is entirely too soft
a metal to be compared to some
professing Christians.
I don’t know that it’s of much
use to appealjto the hearts of old
wolves in sheep’s clothing, that try
to hide their true nature under the
false peltry. Habit is second na
ture; ana I guess it would be
abont as easy tn whistle a wood
chuck out of his hole with a psalm
tune, as to mako a pious man out
of a knotty-headed old hypocrite;
but I would say to young sinners
■who have forsaken innocent and
wholesome exercise—say billiards,
for example-for keno, faro, poker,
and other diabolical’ pastimes, that
they are going express to that hot
region where the temperature nev
er moderates, and that they will
find it greatly to their advantage
to break up immediately and take
the upward train.
Finally, I would remark that the
saying, “RichesJ have wings,” is
perfectly true, and that they are
very apf to fly away with their
owners to the Devil’s nest.

DOL A man in Buffalo, who has
a wife only half his age, and has
become tired of her, proposes to
raffle her off on the 23a March.—
Tickets, 25 cents. He recom
mends her os a good housekeeper,
who is willing to stay with any one
who may draw her. The offer is
said to be bona fide.
An exchange says the present
insatiable appetite for latest news”
makes man appear to be a tele
gramivorous animal.

Nashville Banner says:
Jit was the telegraph, we believe,
which the other day brought to
light an old letter of
Grant written to somebody in
Mexico, and proposing to go out
there on a jishing excursion after
the present Presidential campaign.
Not to be behind the telegraph, we
have also just resurrected a “pri
vate and strictly confidential”
epistle from Molasses to hie father.
It is dated “Old Cov«-in-town,
Ky,” and reads: Dear Papa—
Dry up! your d—n twaddle in the
Ledger (pardon the unfilial irrev
erence) is making me Ihe laughing
stock of the civuized world. Do
you Buppose, you cussed old Ja*
key, that anybody cares how I
used to mount mules, haul logs,
ride bareback and play marbles ?
Why do you let your mouth go off
■o fast? Can’t you see I’m keep
ing mine shut to keep from catch
ing a Democratic neuralgia, and a
severe Coperheadache : What does
the Ledger pay you for pity’s
sake ? I’ll cover the pile with a
whole year’s salary to keep out
the history of my life. lam wil
ling to die a natural death, but your
life of me I fear will be the politi
cal death of me. But if you will
write another letter about me say
yon ain’t my father. Say you are
a d—d old bastard, or anything to
turn the conversation. If l was
an Icelander your affectionate bi«
ographical sketches would make
me perspire all the blood out of
my system and smoke forty Cuba
sixes a minute. Your affectionate
son—“ Molasses.”
There is a story current in Lon
don that Lord Lytton one day
asked Earl Derby, who had just
resigned the premiership on ac
count of the gout, whether he
would rather be the premier peer
of England, with a rent roll of
SBOO,OOO a year, but sixty years
of age, or an officer of the guards,
aged twenty two, just upon town,
with only a $5 note is his pocket;
and Lord Derby ia said to have
replied that he would exchange
with the young officer that moment
if he could.
