May tho Macon and Western Road always be blest-■?, with a man so liberal and gen erous to preside over and look after her intereats. M. E. BREWER, Ch. Ex. Com., Memorial Aseoriotion. Qritfin, Gs., Jens 22, 1808. Growth of Q-torgia Cities — Zla* eonto Lead them Alt. —The Chron icle and Sentinel regrets that Au- Sißta has made no progress since e war, while Macon, Savannah, and Atlanta have improved “in so remarkable a degree." It says combinations are forming to cut off the resources which have sus tained that city, by turning trade into other channels. “Within a few days it continues, “Sa vannah has made a grab at our Alabama trade by a consolidation of the Muscogee with the South- Western road, the latter being al ready under the absolute control of die great Central monopoly.— We hear that, not content with se curing the control of this link in the chain which leads from Savan nah to Montgomery, already a large amount of the stock of the Montgomery and West Point rail road has passed into the Central and Savannah interests, and we may reasonably expect that by the time the mil trade opens, the lat ter eity will have such an ascend ancy in the management of that road as to be able to establish a fatally discriminating tariff of freights and hares against Augus ta. Nor is this all. By the most astonishing energy and forethought Savannah is pushing her great line from Griffin to Decatur, Ala bama. By the completion of this line a large amount of the trade of the Tennessee and Mississippi Valleys, which now seek a market here over the Western and Atlan tic and the Georgia road, wilt be out off and taken over this cheap and shorter route to Savannah.’’ The Chronicle makes a mistake in placing Sfcvannah and Atlanta at the head of these combinations. The city of Macon is at the bot tom and head of them all. By merging our system of railroads with the Muscogee and the Mont gomery and West Point roads, we at once turn the cotton of Middle Alabama through Macon. Sup plies from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New England most come here for that section by way es Savannah, the Central and the Bmnawiek roads. A daily lino of splendid steamers will soon be run ning between Now York and Sa vannah with through rates knock ing all competition out of the ring most completely. Maoon is to be the grand distributing point, and the imperial city of Georgia.— Joitf. k Mea. Untvertal Charity —To do good onto all mea is a Christian maxim, but in the same sentence there is a speciality in fator of “those of the household erf faith.” Therefore, admitting the philanthropy of tlje Nasarene and his followers to the standard, Masonry comes in for full honors, in that she inculcates a love equally as universal. In exelcfding some men from the ma sonic fold, she does not shut them oat of masonic love. There being many routes laid down by Which Southerners may reach the great metropolis, it ia natural for them to seek the best, safest, and most expeditious route by which to get there and return. It affords us pleasure to recommend to those disposed to avail themselves of a cheap and pleasant trip the Louis ville and Nashville route. It is safe, expeditious, and has less changes of ears then any other route. It possesses the unrivalled advantage of passing over a region of country the scenery of which ia unsurpassed in America, and runs two trains from Atlanta and three from Louisville to New York dai ly. Fare for the round trip is on ly thirty-seven dollars.
