It observes, in a recent article, that “floods of pathetic eloquence and long years of Parliament ary struggling taught the English peo ple to imagine that the world was made for Sambo.” The Times has arrived at the following conclusion; “The negfo is a laxy animal without any foresight, and therefore requiring to be led and compelled—be is deoidsdly inferior, very little raised above a mere animal.” lie is “void of self-reliance and is the creature of circumstance— scarcely fitted to take care of himself— has no care for to morrow—has no de sire for property strong enough to in* duce him to labor—lives from hand to inouth. In Jamaica emancipation has thrown enormous tracts of land out of cultivation, and on these the negro squats, getting all that he wants with little labor, and sinking in the most ress olnte fashion back to the savage state.” B®** The best definition we have aver heard of “bearing false witness against your neighbor,” was given by a littTS girl in school. She said it was when nobody did nothing, and somebody went Boston, (Mass.,) Sept. 18. John Quincy Adams accepts the Democratic nomination for Governor.— Ilis letter of acceptance says: “I think that two matters of nation* al interest are involved In this election ; one of which is important, and the oth •' vital. The former, which I take to be the financial question, was not treated by the New York National Convention in a manner which satisfies' my judgment, by providing for a pay ment (if the bonds known as five twen ties At the Surplus revenue alone —thus igudnng what seems to mq a valuable part of Mr. Pendleton’s plan, vis ta withdrawal of the issues of the nation al banks—the Democratic party commits itself to an indefinite , extension of the intolerable nuisance of an irredeemable paper Currency. I aul too much a Democrat to regard iny Such prospect with patience. I believe in bard mon vev. and therein hold myself to be a true JaoCsnniitn Dem.-crat ” Adams dritieiied the measures ot Congress as the vital question, saying: “I Mill not argrie the uncnnstitutinnality of reconstruc tion. The SI most unanimous disincli nation of the Republicans to allow it to undergo the scrutiny of the Supreme Court would seem to confirm the report ed statement of the lamented Stevens, that only two damned fable in the party beleived the reconstruction acts con stitutional. Even if constitutional, I should deem them unwise. The union they impose is, to my eyes, no more like a true union of hands and hearts, than a galvanized corpse resembles a healthy man ” His letter closes thus: “I think nei ther the interest nor the destiny of the people will allow permanent domination to the African race in any State; but the Republican party is irrevocably pledged to this idea. They have stak ed their existence as a party on its triouiDh. To this idea they have sac rificed their constitutional oblieations, and for it must make fresh offerings.— In future, the blacks must have lands, arms and a standing army to maintain them in their position—thev are clam oring for them now. The United Btates furnish them. The path upon which Congress entered permits no half. Retreat is min. We must begin anew, taking the Constitution for our guide and the natural laws for our limitation.” “Jived Iv.” —The Montgomery (Al abama) Mail gives the fallowing account of a negro marriage ceremony that took place in that county not long since.— Said the sable parson, addressing the auditors : “Here is a couple who have walked out to-night, wishing to be jined in, and thro’ love and wishing all dem (lat, have any ting twixt dein, come forward and speak now, if not, let dem hold dar peace now and forever more. I wants eyery ear to hear, and every heart to enjov. “Mr. Jim Thompson whomsoever stands fastly by your left side, do you take her for your dearly beloved wife, to wait on hor through sickness and through health, safe and he safe, holy and be holy, loving and be loving ; do you lave htr mother; do you love ber father ; do you love hor brothers ; do you love her sisters : do you love her master ; do you love her mistress : but do you love God the best T Answer—l do. “Miss Mary Thompson, whomsoever standst lastly by your right side, do you take to he your dear beloved hus band, to wait on him through henlth and throhgh donjtitiion, safe and be safe, holy and be holy; do you love bis mother ; do bon love his father ; do you love his brothers; do you love his sisters J do you love God the best?” Answer—“l will.” I shall pronounce Mr Jim to hold Miss Mary fastly by the right hand, and I shall pronounce you both to beman and wife, by the Com mandments of God. We shall hopes and trusting throagh God, that you may live right—that you may die right, now and forevermore. Now, Mr. Jim, slew your bride. Let us sing a hime : ‘“Flanged in a gulf of dark despair, Ye wretched sinners are, Ac. 0 Amen.” An Extinguishes.— Dr. R. attended a masquerade ball. In the motley and happy throng he falls in with a fait pil grim in black silk, whose charming person, snow-white neck, and bewitch ingly coqdetish aits rfwaken in his soul the moat rapturous love. She csiets up on him looks of the most languishing terfdefinewf; he revels in the hope of having made a blissful conquest; He musters up his courage and ventures to address her; “Who art thou lovely mask 1 asked the doctor, almost mtelted in tho glow oflove. “Is it possible you don’t know me doctor f° ' “Upon my honor I do not know tfiee," "Bethink yourself dear dootor.” “And! thou art surely the gracioiis fair one Who has appeared to me to day for the fourth time, to open the gates of blits ” “You’re mistaken doctor, I am no fairy." “I am the Will known lady to whom yon haVe now these nine Weeks been in debted in the sum of tWo dollars and seven shillings for washing and iron* mg." The doctor stood like a petrified her., ring. 4 | * 2L t&~ We have often fiien asked the difference between a “carpet-bagger" and a “tcalaweg." The luka (Miss.) Gazette answers the question in the following manner : The oarpet-bagger is a Northern thief, who comes South .‘to plunder every white man who is a gentleman of any property or respecter bility, and get all offices he can. The scalawag is a Southern-born scoundrel, who will do all the carpetobagger will, and, besides, murder the oarpet-bagger for the gutti perohe ring his sister gave him when he left home.” GRIFFIN CARDS.
