Smmnnnl) Jlßfiiiiß ISHmertteer. VOL. IV.—NO. 260. £tamwh ga% Advertiser The most w idely circu lated and least expensive me dium of advertising in Savannah. BY BEARD OTMBAII STATE AND FLORIDA NEWS. A negro woman and four children, whose cabin was also destroyed by fire, were burned to death on the plantation of Mr. Jonas Rackley, about seven miles from Montezuma, in this State, on Mon day of last week. Dr. Samnel Bard, late of the New Era, a teacher of men and an expounder ot po litics, has gone to Washington. A call is issued for the Executive Com mittee of the Georgia Agricultural Soci ety to meet in Atlanta on the tenth of February. The Atlanta Intelligencer devotes more than two columns of its space to answer ing Rause Wright of the Augusta Chroni cle, who has soundly abused the former for its advocacy of Bullock, while sailing under Democratic colors. The Judge says to the General, “ Cease, viper, you bite at a file." Does the Judge mean to say that be is as hardened as all that ? Foster Blodgett, Superintendent of the State Road, invites the public to examine the b'ooks, papers, etc., of the Road, in order “that the slanderous insinuations against his personal character may be re futed.” The Valdosta times man informs the ladies of his community that his editorial room has been scoured out and that they need no longer beafraid of contamination. Does our up country friend mark this event, as an era in his lifetime —a good wash? The Freedman’s Saving Bank and Trust Company has opened a Brunch in Atlanta which is doing well. Yesterday a drove of sheep, fully a 150 strong, reached our city and attracted more attention than if the Legislature had been turned loose. As they bad wool, they are clearly eligible to seats. —Ailun ta Constitution. A laity or Wealth and Refinement Marries a Bummer. [From the Newark Register of the 14th 1 A marriage ceremony was performed under very peculiar circumstances in this rity the other day. The fact that one of the contracting parties is “in society,” nnd the strange manner in which the affair was- brought about have made no little ■ensation. It appears that some months ago a young lady of wealth and refine ment, and who bad been educated in . v accomplishment fell r«-*Uely in love with an idle lounger about a hotel in a small country town in which she lived, in the State of New York, A1 tboogh her parents were shocked at her marks of preferment for one who was considered so far beneath her in social position, she made no attempt to curb her affection or to restrain love by reason. The members of her family, in order to save themselves, and the romantic girl from the disgrace of such an unnatural alliance, persuaded her to visit a sister in this city, who was cautioned to keep watch over her. therefor, not permitted to so out upon the streets alone, and even in shopping excursions she was attended by her sister. A day or two before New Year’s day they entered a dry goodsstore together, and while the elder was busily engaged in making a purchase the younger slipped out, and was lost in the crowd upon the sidewalk, and then almost im mediately found her lover, who had fol lowed her to Newark.' Together they re paired to the residence of one of the most prominent clergymen in the city, where they were quickly and quietly married. The young girl then returned to her sister’s home, and excused her absence by pleading a suddenly remembered en gagement at the dressmaker’s. On New Year’s day she received calls with her sister, and entertained in a very pleasant and unembarrassed manner a large number of friends. Nor did she give any indication daring the following day of the step she had taken. On Mon day, however, she suddenly appeared be fore her sister and quietly handed her the marriage certificate, which she had procured immediately after the marriage upon the previous Friday. Although it was too late to untie the knot, the sister visited the minister, and chided him for his hasty action. His excuse, however, for his part in the unhappy affair was simply that, “If he had not performed the ceremony some other clergyman would.” The relatives and friends of the girl are naturally very indignant, as they suffer keenly the disgrace of the impru dent marriage. Combining Business and Pleasure. -*-A Florida correspondent of the Rich mond Dispatch gives some queer revela tions of Northern invalid life (and death) down there. The following story will suffice what a practical “cuss” that chap was, to be sure : There was one fellow who died in Pa lalka a short time before my visit, of whom I heard from many sources. When he found his end approaching he sent North for a metallic collin, and had it brought into his bed room: tried it. and found it would fit him exactly. He was thereupon very much satisfied; and during the few remaining days of his life always spoke of himself dead. He requested his wife to find out whether she could send it on by express. She dutifully inquired, and found that they could not carry it. He then told her to have a box made, and have it made large; to put it in it; aud as there was plenty of room, to pack in some sweet potatoes and oranges for the children; “and be very careful, my dear, not to let them turn it over, lest the oranges should be smashed.” So this careful and eco nomical father died, and his wife carried out his wishes, nnd very carefully carried it home to Vermont; and the children enjoyed the potatoes and oranges, and wished their dear father would go and die in Florida every winter.
