The Abocs has a circulation through
out the bounds of the South Georgia
Methodist Conference, which is one of
the most important sections for adver
tisers in the Sonth. tf.
Tlic Bat abridge Argos and the
City of Savannah.
Hie editor of the Savannah Morning
JVeics, in his issue of tlie 1st instant, does
injustice to us in commenting upon an
editorial, from this paper, written with a
viqw to promote tho interests of the
Gulf Road, and, also, those of the city
of Savannah. Wo deny the charge he
makes against ns, that "the editor of,
this paper is endeavoring to crente the j
impression that the city of Savauuah is
not only hostile to the Macon and
Brunswick Road, but that her people
are willing to sacrifice the Gulf Road.”
We also deny that tbo editor of The
Abgub is now, or ever has been, actuated
by a “spirit of misrepresentation of the
people of Savannah.” The editor of
the Metes cannot point to a word or syl
lable that has ever appeared in these
columns (whether written by a Local
not!) to justify tho foregoing charges
made against us.
In the article copied from The Argus,
and upon which the editor animadverts,
our sole motive was to present the pop
ular sentiment oa the subject of the
transfer of the city’s stock in the Gulf
Hoad tp a hostile corporation, aud advo
cate tho re-election of tho present board
of Directors, adducing ns one of our
motives for that advocacy that the
charge made against Savannah by the
local editor of the Savannah Morning
Metes and the people of the interior of
the State would be disproved, and the
injury thereby accruing to the commerce
of the city prevented.
As to the Macon and Brunswick Road,
wo have never written a line in favor of
that enterprise, from its inception totli9
present time, believing a rond thns lo-
caled would tend rather to cripple tlmn
advance the railroad interests of tire
State, h e have not been able to see
why two roads should thus bo built
Radical journals North, to the fact
that both tLe evidence under oath,
of white and black, and the decision
of the magistrates thereon, fully
sustain the Savannah Republican in
all it reported about the affair. We
oid not mane a solitary statement
that is not susta'.ned by the testimo-
ny, while the disingenuous and
shamefully partizan report of Col
^ ihinms to General Sibley is shown
to be utterly false and groundless.
We also beg to cell their attention
to the fact that while the insurgents
were most ably and ingeniously de
fended, nnd everything possible
brought forward in their behalf, no
one witness, white or black, could be
produced to testily to a disagreement
between the negroes and the planters
on the subject of wages.
It is too much, then, when we de
mand of these Radical journals that
they take back all the lies they have
put in circnlation^on the Ogeecliec
afiliir during the month °tkat is
passed ?
We Copy the foregoing from the
Savannah Republican of the 30 th
ult. It is incredible that a military
officer, who -values his reputation,
especially ono as high in rank a*
Col. W iiliams, could have been guilty
of making false and wholly ground
less statements in an official report
to his superior officer. And vet the !
foregoing assures us that such is the
fact, proven to be so by witnesses
under oath, both of white and black
clerk of ibe House and his assistants;
and $5;326 to clerks of Retrenchment
and other Committees. The present
clerical force of the Senate numbers
twelve clerks at nine dollars per
day each. The pay of the Secretary
is twelve dollars per day.
The people look to the Legislature
to reform this abuse, as well as
the matter of their own pay. The
late General T. R. R. Cobb, who was
for several years Secretary of the
Senate, when the bnsiuess of legisla
tion was quite as voluminous aa it ii
now, once told us, that he wa3 will
ing to take a contract for the entire
clerical duty of both house for
term of years at ten thousand dollars
a year. He had calculated the entire
cost, and said ha could make a for
tune out of the office at that salary.
Compare the s»me with the enormous
amount o! forty-fine thousand three
hundred and fifty two dollars, even
making allowance for depreciated
currency, aud what a contrast we
have!
The people of Georgia expect to
be robbed to some extent, but this
wholesale system of plundering the
treasury is more than they can or
ought to bear. The legislator who
withholds his approval from measures
of retrenchment in the present im
poverished condition of the State will
be marked and held to a strict
account.—Sav. Republican.
“Yv as .General Banks twice ordered
to snpcrcoae General Grant?” is a ques
tion still agitating the press. We now
see that the Lawrence (Massachusetts)
American—published in General Banks’
district, says:
“It is quite useless for the New York
Sun or tho Boston Advertiser to sneer
at the matter as fiction, for, as we hap
pen personally to know, the official au
tographic orders are now in the hands
of General Grant, and put the whole
matter beyond question or controversy,
Until tho controversy between Gov.
Bullock and Dr. Augeir, State Treasur
er, involving the honesty of the Govern
or, is settled, we forbear comment, not
willing, to risk doing injustice to either
party.
The -Savannah News, speaking of tho
expenditures of tho State Government,
says: “Another year in Atlanta, similar
in management aud results to the last,
will leave Georgia with nothing that can
excite the cupidity of tho most impe-
curious carpet-bagger. ”
Mr. Mantou Marble has bought out
all the other owners of tho World news-
nenr each other, and representing the 1‘aper, and is now its sole proprietor,
same interests, while other aud large | Tfle F rice P a «I for one quarter of the
Ilic Albany News, strangely enough
ravor.s the Central Railroad monopoly;
or so we infer from its remarks oa the
subject.—Bainbridge Argus,
The Argus may have many eves, but it
certainly failed to see the object of our
editorial on the S. G. & Fla. R. R. and
S. W. R. It. purchase. The Editor’s
“inference” is not warranted bv our “re
marks;” but since an esteemed contem
porary misinterprets us, it is due to
ourself as a Georgian and a journalist
to disclaim any sympathy whatever
with the “Centra! Railroad Monopoly’’
or any other monopoly.-—The purchase
of the Gulf stock, viewed as a mere bus
iness transaction, is not a cause for war
upon the Central and S. W. Railroads,
but the aims and purposes do make a
casus belli, and the whole people of
Georgia are interests i in thwarting the
iniquitous scheme.—Ai'iomy -Vtips.
The continued ill health of Dr. L.
F. A\. Andrews, the editor, necessi
tating his retirement from the news
paper business, for a season, at least,
the Georgia Citizen will bo sold or
