Had our energies, our wealth, aud'en
terprise been more widely diversified,
the interests of our people would have
been equally diversified, and more per
sons would have felt the importance of
the cause. Hence the appeals of patri
otism would have found a response
where they appealed in vain, as the
common feeling come to be that the war
was carried on only for the benefit of
one class of our citizens.

public interest, to the whole South, we
only propose uow to notice the benefit
it would be to our own city and county.
W e have never seen a people more
anxious—and praiseworthily so—to build
up their own community, than our own
people. It was for this end that tliey
put forth a herculean effort, and that, j
too, in the darkest times of our financial ]
history, for the completion of the Atlnn- 1
tie and Gulf Railroad, and thebuildipgof
the bridge over Flint river. It is for tho
same end that they uow contemplate the
building of thc Bainbridge, Cuthbert
and Columbus Road. The Bainbridge
extension .is completed, our population
and business have been greatly incrcns
the present time, and very wisely so,
upon the subject of fertilizers. Arc our
citizens aware of the fact that much of
the substance of our own soil has gone
; from the cotton factories' of the North
| to enrich the barren liilis of New. Eng-
