The visitors then re tired until after tea at 3 o’clock, when the building was rapidly filled up to its greatest capacity. A fine band of music was present, which gave eclat to the occasion. THE EVENISO EXERCISES Were most interesting to the entire auditory. The young orators seemed to vie with each other for the palm and so even was the race that, to us, it seems almost impossible to say who gained it. Various opinions have been expressed, and for fear we might err, we propose to let the merits of the several addresses rest with the opinion of the public. And not at all behind the young gents were the young ladies. Their compositions were excellent. Wewere glad to see in the selection of their subjects more regard paid to com mon sense than is generally the cus tom. Many pertinent, witty and prac tical bits were made, and if heeded will probably do good. The little ta- vorite’s composition was brimming fall of “notions of things generally,” that fell thick and fast upon the luck less devotees of fashion, and brought down the most tremendous applause of the house. We have not space to say more but will speak of the merits of the school anon. cause the State irresistibly carried them out of the Union, and compelled them to defend lnr, while, at the same time, the State cou’d have hung them if they ha 1 opposed her; and they could but believe that, when the State repealed its ordinance of “ratification” it was no longer lawful for the citizens to obey Federal authorities, that ratification being the only cause of Federal juris diction, and the power of repeal being bv all law and common sense exactly commensurate with that of enactment. Would it not have been a horrible romance for two of these men, after passing to the eveinig of life in ardent devotion to these principles, to have had the power, and to have exercised it of hanging the other two—also became S. Said St. George Tucker, in his com mentaries, published in 1802 : “Each is still a perfect Stale, still soverign, still independent, and still capable, should the occasion require, to resume the exer ciso of its functions as such, in the most unlimited exont.” Said William Rawle, in his commentaries (see edition of 1829) : “The States, then, may wholly withdiaw from the Union; but while they continue they must retain the char acter of representative republics. The secession of a State fron the Union depends on the will of the people of such Slate. The people alone, as we have already seen, hold the power to alter their Constitution.” The above authors—one fro’n the North and the other from the South—were among the ablest of tbe early American jurists, and tbe’r statement was taken as truth. It was an essential and indisputable trntb, and not a mere opinion. And it will be shown fully hereafter that this right of secession was considered by the fathers unquestionable—loo much so, indeed, for discussion. The above works were text-books at West Point when Davis and Lee were cadets there. Was it not rather wicked for Uncle Samule to think of hanging liis pupils for practising the precepts he specially taught them ! Thus it was that these four now distin guished personages, wcae educated and impress-d : and it is probably that tbe views of all of them remained unchanged during thirty rears of their manhood till 1860—the great ep-vch of change.
