Editorial Correspondence.
Savannah, 6 a. , Sept 15,18G9. j
A trip, to this city via Quincy, Talla-
hassee, Madison and Lite Oak, Fla.,
afforded us a more ‘extended view or the
country than Ire have enjoyed in some
time. We noticed that the widely known
and^once .beautiful 'town of Quincy,
Irblth, before tile late Northern war upon
the £botb, was exceeded only by Talla
hassee in 4lie stela o£. Florida cities,—
and really was the most desirable and
flourishing one of them all,—presents to
the eye,a most uninviting aspect. Fire
bos destroyed the larger portion of the
business part of the town; and there are
no signs of recuperation, that we could
see. It is true, that there are still some
beautiful residences; and flowers and
shade trees are still cultivated; but there
are no new buildings going up, and
many onoe tasty dwellings are rapidly
going to decay. We passed through
Quincy on the 3rd instant, and yet there
bad been but one new bale of cotton re
ceived there this season; notwithstand
ing it is the centre of one of the finest
cotton regions in this section; and farm
ers in Gadsden county, of which Quincy
is the site, art doing well, and will ship
many thousand bales to Savannah before
the end of the year. We hope the de-
clention of Quincy is only temporary.
We saw but little of Tallahassee, a
city in,whose future we feel a lively in
terest,—we having formed a strong at
tachment for this magnolia city during
a sojourn of several montb3, many years
ago, soon after we had reached onr ma
jority. Col. Joseph Clisby—now of the
Macon Telegraph—was editor of the
Sentinel at that time, and Cols. 8. S.
Sibley and Chss. E. Dyke—the latter
still at his post-conducted the Floridian,
which is a superior journal, in every re
spect* and always has been since our
acquaintance with it. As the cars passed
wo looked up the towering hill towards
the capitol, and conld see only a few old
honses under neath as grand a forest of
oaks as ever grew 1 .' We made a detour to
Warikeenah, Jefferson county, Florida,
“ where we spent several days with rela
tives and frieuds, preaching Wednesday
night, 8th instant, in the Methodist
cbttrob, to a very intelligent congrega
tion, of which Rev. James Wiggins, for
: merly of the Georgia Annnal Conference,
is pastor, and with whom and other
ministers we spent a day most pleasantly.
The crops in Jefferson are 'very fine.
We saw many of them, and can testify
to their excellence. The caterpillar had
done its work, having stripped the
leaves from nearly every field we . saw
bnt we do not regard the damage from
this source very great. We also saw some
indications of rust.
" The lands around Waukeenah are
some of the brtfc in the State, and ap
pear, almost lhexhanstable. Fields,
whioh have been in cultivation more
than..thirty years, are still -yielding
bountiful harvests to the planter, and
with proper culture and attention.will
afford subsistence to another generation.
The P. and G. Railroad is needing re
pairgenerally. It is really unsafe be
tween Tallahassee and Quincy; and its
nCW purchasers (if they can be called
jHere&asert) will find their hands full,
^during the next two years, in placing the
-road in proper plight. The illiberality
of the Directory towards the ministry
and press argurs no good either to the
company or people whom the road
should benefit. At Live Oak, we were
pleased to see evidences of progress, in
the new buildings scattered over a large
arena; bnt there appeared to be bnt
little design or order in their location
and structure. This will probably be
an important place for business in the
BUinoo^« lam Mis,
Here we took the Gulf Rood cars, and
felt considerable relief in the superior
accommodations offered to travelers by
this road, in its magnificent passenger-
cars and substantial line of road. We
felt aseenrity it would be difficult for
any One to feel on the comparatively
worn out ears and road vre had just left
behind. ...
We reached Savannah, the great
seaport of Georgia and commercial
emporium of the South, on Friday
morning, the 10th, and were not a
little astonished at the amonnt of
cotton which had already fotmd its
way to this city.
Business has been very brisk here
with cotton-factors and wholesale
merchants during the past week.
Interior merchants have found their
way to headquarters—the wholesale
establishment of Messrs Lathbop &
Co.,—and are laying in a great many
goods to meet the demand from their
planting friends. Improvements are
going on in every direction—new
wharves, new warehouses, new stores,
pew dwellings, and of the most sub
stantial material, many of the stores
' fronted:-with massive iron,—these
aad maav other indications prove to
the beholder that Savannah is pros
pering. and that her course is ON
WARD.
We are stopping at the Marshall
(louse, and find it maintains its reputa
tion as being one of the best hotels in
the State. Col. A. B. Luce still pro
prictor.
