are superior to the sentimente and opiu-

ungnat exceptions to the rwle that kosi-

capital; but, after ali, it is an uphill

it is like rowing against wind and tide—
it is it strain all the (inpe, aud the mo-

it from bis shoulders.
But to return to cheap fares: As we
remarked some weeks ago, much time
must elapse before the propel effect of
these reduced rates will be discoverable.
The business and pleasures of the people
will “be comparatively slow jn adapting
themselves to the change. Many people
will be slow in acquiring a relish for
travel, to which .they bavebeeu unaccus

will find traveling a rational, healthful
nud improving pastime. They will visit
the towns to do their shopping and will
make many a personal examination and
pni-chuse, at the trade centres, which
they never think of doing now.
In this way they will keep up with the
times and improve and enlarge their
tastes and ideas in every department of
life—from the field to the fireside; and
the effect will be none the less beneficient
upon our population than we believe it
will be on the ronds, which will theu be

to the Nhylock policy of demanding
double pride, simply because they could
get it from the few compelled to travel.
We liope, therefore, that the roads
will not only adhere to the reduction,

Railway Travel in Georgia.
We commend the following setisibl
article; from the Macon Telegraph, to
managers of onr railroads:
The Cnthbert Appeal, in an article
copied yesterday, calls attention to tbe
increase in travel upon tbe Southwestern
B«ud. since the .adoption of theliaK-fare
system^ and tbiuks it demonstrates that
tbe high fares operate as an embargo on

marked improvement in tbe appearance

a hundred per cent above the Northern
and Western roads, while it is a fact
that, price of labor, fuel and relative
amount of capital invested being consid-
ered, tire Southern reads can be to*
ranch more cheaply tba* the Northern fhM

accomtn>alations they extend to travelers
is so inarke l that comparison vsyrotetqud.
As soon as practicable, it is highly de

so many of the ‘modern improvements,"
in passenger carriage as are practicable
should be introduced.

Tbe Future of Columbus*
A writer iu one of’’the Colnmbns
papers expresses some apprehensions
about the future of that city, which
we think are quite groundless. Col
umbus is bound to be a large and
prosperous town. Her water power
alone settles that question. She has
enough of it, if properly utilised to
make her a second Lovell or Law
rence. But supplementing thia grand
resource of wealth and prosperity ar®
the immense regions of fertile soil
tributary to her trade—her river nav
igation and her splendid railway bbn-
nections, present and immediately
prospective.
But one reasonable conclusion >•
susceptible from these premises, and
that is, that Columbus is bound:-, to
take a rapid gcbwth m m&nafootmjng
and trade, and town property fo as
necessarily compelled to a rapid ap
preciation in value, This is the com
mon opinion of outsiders and we are
confident' it will prove a^ sound one.
Home capital alone would .-dppbt
less develop her manufacturing,’facil
ities with some rapidity—and this is
capital stock oi file Aegis and tiia^
nix Mills made last spring; But we
hold the facilities presented by such
a place as Columbus for cotton man
ufacturing will be, sure to enlist large
amounts of Northern capital. Man
ufacturers are compelled to see the
superior advantages of a mild climate
—cheaper labor—with tbe raw mate
rial till around them, afforded by each
a place as Columbus, and gradually
the entire business of manufacturing
heavy cotton goods will be transfer
red to this section, and the Northern:
mills will confine themselvoarto the
production of fine? and fancy fabrics,
requiring more, skilled and cosily, la
bor and less of the raw material. We
feel no solicitude about the future of
Columbus.—Muon Telegraph.
The Fibs Fiend.—The losses by fire
throughout, the United States during/the
month of August just pussetl, amounted
to $6,438,000. This is.a startling state
ment. The loss- is nearly double that
of August, 1868, and much exceeds the
total of apy month during the post or
present year. Tbe value of property
destroyed by fire since January 1, ltjfiff.',
already amouLts $27,100,000, while the
total losses in 1868 were less, than $35,-
000,000. The fire of Angnst flth, ia
Philadelphia, was tlic most deAtrn'Ctive .
one that has occnrred in. the conptry
since July 4th, 1866, when the city of
Portland, Me., wn* devastated—tlie loss
amounting to $10,000,000. Tn* wfde-
Mpread drought has, of conr^e, been one
of tbe principal causes of this great de
struction of property. In this coniiee-
tion, New York has special cause for
thankfulness. The total.loss by fire in
this city during the month of August
was less than $88,000, and at noon®
conflagration was property valued at
$10,000 destroyed- So much for the
