Why I* 1
The Macon Journal and Messenger
askr:
Why is it that when the cotton market
advances in Liverpool, we see a declin-
} compelled to sell our crop
prices as will enable the Northern spec-
nlutor to make all the profit?
If capitalists at the North by combin
ing their means aud locking them up so
as to compel us to accede to whatever
terms they may dictate, can control our
market for their own benefit, is it not
time for ns to be putting onr heads to
gether to devise some means of emanci
pation from this thraldom? We see a
great deal about our employing our
surplus means iu various industrial en
terprises, and thus securing to oureelves
immense profits. We would suggest as
a very important enterprise, the forma
tion of a company to run a linn of steam
ers betwecu Savannah and Liverpool,
time giving ns a direct trade between
our cotton fields nnd the best market
Jer onr produce, besides the other ad
vantages such a line of communication
would afford us, aud saving to ourselves
the profits which the Northern “middle
man” now puts into his own pockets.
Were such a line established—and we
can procure all the money we need in
Liverpool aud Manchester, to establish
it we need he under no apprehension
as to obtain means to move the crops.
Northern capital nil! then be mere
abundant than now, and offered more
freely and on better terms, when those
who control it nnd want our cotton,
come into competition with the English
capitalists who also want it
As it. is, owing to our helpless depen- j
denoe on New York, the moneyed men
by locking their safes, compel ns to sell
onr cotton fully two to three cents lelow
its intrinsic value, and not ojly that,
but in the face of an upward tendency
of prices r can foroe us to submit to the
dowuward tendency which they create
for their own advantage.
poor’ai d feelle ? Here is enough of a
text for a long sermon, which everv
Georgian should address to himself, as
he is a true and loyal man. It never can
be admitted that Georgians are for Geo-
gia until they show some capability of
combination for the common welfare of
their dear old mother—until they dis
play that lofty patriotism which will en
able them to rise above the peevish,
nasty, filthy sectionalisms which have so
cursed the State in the past, and make
even a little sacrifice for the general
good. When that is apparent, yon may
conclude that Georgians are indeed for
Georgia, and that they have the spirit
and wisdom to bring her State and com
mercial city to their true positions. The
Akgus lias done good work towards ef
fecting the great object in view, and is
justly regarded as one of the great Cham
pious of that system of internal improve
ment which must ere long place ypur
State in the front rank of commercial
communities.
Yon will be pleased to learn that Sa
Florida crop of cotton this season. This
result has been brought about by the
good sales made last winter by several of
its lending cotton factors. Prominent
among them is the well established and
widely known honseof L. J. Gnilmartin
Co-, whose sales have given universal
satisfaction. No house in Savannah or
Charleston has a better reputation for
integrity and skill than this. As the
Agents of the Charleston and Florida
line of steamers which touch at Savan
nab, they have accomplished mnch also
for the people of Florida, for which they
are receiving ample returns in the shape
of a liberal patronage, J.
