The Character of John C. Cal
houn.
We need not refer to the career of Mr.
Calhoun in public life, since the history
is not only on record, but is ample. Po
litically, it may bo more necessary to
state that the popular error of the North,
which described him as a disunionist,
was due to the machinations of party,
which, indeed, -might well have made
him so. Mr. Calhoun was the most con
servativo of all our statesmen, and well
knew that tho only way to avoid disunion
was to do justice, to suffer no trespass
upon the constitution, which was the
only bond of nnion liefween the high
contracting parties. His doctrine of the
State veto was one which be deduced
logically from the terms of the compact,
not subversive of the constitution or the
union, but eminently conservative, of
both. The time will' come when our
country—tho storm passed, the strife at
rest—will do his political memory jus
tice. Of his mind and his qualities, we
need, perhaps, to say as little. He was
undoubtedly the piofoundest political
metaphysician that our country has ever
produced. Severe in his logic, his im
aginative power was singularly vigorous,
bold and rapid, like that of an eagle,
rushing,*in straight lines, to his conclu
sion and his object, with all the clnes of
argument in his grasp. He lacked the
coloring properly of fancy. But never
was man more nobly endowed for col
loquial discussion and maffected' elo
quence His wonderful powers in this
field have never been questioned. With-
a leading idea of all the topics natural
to the policies of society; with a thor
ough knowledge of society itself;, a stu
dent of history, always in seirch of the
underbfinef iiifluctH-es-wliicli-lead to war
or peace, prosperity or adversity, lie
led his bearer* on, by the irresistible
charm7equally of ihS"Sii-’riter in mrdo
and tiie fortiier in re. His knowledge,,
rarely passing into pare liu-rahute, was
\et veiy great. Uo was a good planter,
pool statistician; uluuXn.\n 7n object,
march arid iliScOVefry; Ttiid, as an execu
tive officer, without a competitor. The
