Visit te Cuthtert.
We left Bainbridge on the morning
of the 29th alt., on board the beautiful
^ypbast “C. D. Fry," in company
several ministers, bonnd for the j
city of Cuthbert, where the third session “ u ~ ‘“^"nra in that 0«-

be held, on the 1st instant. The most j 8 pn blish the appointments on our
delightful traveling in the world non a P
river steamer, with good cabins, good
fsre, and accommodating officers, none
of which were lacking on this occaasion,
to render onr trip agreeable. There are
few, if sny, cleverer men than the officers
of this boat, and perhaps bnt few better
boats than the “C. D. Fry” anywhere.
And besides, the weather wa* fine, the
river in good boating order, and the
passengers Methodist preachers and a
portion of their families. Hence, there
was nothing to mar the pleasure of the

ITS rescued RsiOsdnaa *» €P»od time
to ifbe the morning train the next da^
aftar leaving Bainbridge, arriving nt
Cuthbert before noon, where we found
every preparation bad been made by the
good people of that plaoe for onr enter
tainment. We were assigned quarters
nt the hospitable residence of ono of the
honored chiefs of o ir section of the
State, Col. H. H. Jones, whose kindness
and that of his amiable and intelligent
lady and family, will ever demand our
grateful remembrance. Words are in
adequate to express our appreciation of
the rare excellencies of this noble
Christian family*
A ride over Cuthbert on Wednesday
afternoon, the 1st instant, accompanied
by the highly accomplished liuly of
President Hamilton, for which pleasure
we were indebted to onr friend, Colonel
Wylly, Editor of the Cosmopolitan
Monthly, who kindly tendered us a
buggy and horse for the occasion, afford
ing ns'an opportunity of seeing the city,
and noting its many beautiful residences
and incomparable local attractions. We
have been aware, for many years, that
Cuthbert was a desirable place of resi
dence, and have never failed to commend
it for its central position, its healthy
climate, its pure free stone water, and its
magnificent Female College, but we
have never said before wbat we deem a
strict adherence to truth and liouesty
demands of us, after a more thorough
acquaintance with it, that Cuthbert far
surpasses any other locality in South
western Georgia os a plnce of resideuce.
Nor do we except onr own much loved
Bainbridge. As a locality for a female
eollego we doubt if Cuthbert can be
surpassed in the entire State.
The sessions of Conference were very
entertaining to those who were able to
routine of its proceedings. Bishop
Kavanaugh, who was present, presided
with great efficiency, and to the satis
faction of the entire Conference, we be--
lieve. He preached two able discourses,
which were accompanied by the prom
ised ‘‘Power from on high.” His dis
course on Sabbath moruing was that of
an Apostle. His burning words “pierced
to the dividing asunder of soul and
spirit aud of the joints and marrow,”
and, doubtless, proved a “savor of life
nnto life” to many blessed with the
privilege of hearing them.
Outsiders expressed themselves highly
pleased with the body of ministers
present.
Especially was their pJiysicque unsur
passed. Aud we suppose all admitted
their evident intelligence and preaching
ability. As a pulpit orator, Dr. Munsey
ia believed to equal any in the United
■States. His sermons in Cuthbert were
praised as we have never heard efforts of
mortal praised befere. The Bishop re
garded him as a greater than Bascom;
another, who had heard the greatest
preachers of the age, esteemed Munsey
as “a thousand miles ahead of them all!'
The talented editor of the.Cuthbert Ap
peal, who is a Presbyterian, speaks of a
sermon of the Doctor, to which ho lis
tened, entranced, in the most oomph
mentary manner. We make the follow
ing extracts from his notice of him:
“And here the reporter’s peneillings
were suddenly terminated. For as well
could the pen keep pace with the raging
whirlwind, or with the roaring cataract
leaping from cliff to cliff, as with that
resistless flood of eloquence which swept
everything before it.
“Such gifts of speech, such powers of
imagery, and such rugged, lightning
like illustrations, drawn from heaven,
earth and hell, which caused the breath
to come and go, and the chest to heave
with excitement, we have never before
witnessed. The people were held spell
bound; and sobs, and exclamations, and
those tumultuous emotions which stir
the heart to its innermost depths, strug
gled for utteranoe.

The accompanying resolutions speak
for themselves. The passengers, who
passed them unanimously, are incapable
of indulging in fulsome praise, and,
hence, their commendation is intended
as a sincere compliment to the officers
of these steamers:
At a meeting held on board the steam
er C. D. Fry, Nov. 29th, 1869, Bev. J.
W. Simmons was called to the chair, and
Rev* A. J. Dean appointed -Secretary,
when the following preamble and reso
lutions were passed:
Wheress, The members of the South
Georgia Conference on board said
steamer on their way to the ensuing
session of said Conference, have receiv
ed manv expressions of kindness, etc.,
Resolved, That we duly appreciate
the courtesy and kindness of Capt. Abe
Fry, commanding, and Captain Pratt
acting Clerk, with the other officers, and
also the waiters whose politeness com
mends them to our kindest considera
tion.
Resolved, That our thanks ore due,
and they are hereby tendered to said
officers, for passing ns from Bainbridge
to Fort Gaines at half fare.
Resolved, That* copy of the forego
ing resolutions be published in TBe

It will be seen elsewhere that the
Chief Engineer of this road, Col. John
G. Clarke, advertises for sealed pro
posals for contracts for earlk-wrrk,
trestling, grubbing, clearing and
cross-ties for thesections of the load be
tween Bainbridge and Colquitt, work
on the same to be commenced at once.
The Directory of the road, at a meet
ing held in this city on Friday last,
after a thorough investigation of the
finances of the Company, felt author
ized to begin tbe work forthwith, and,
hence, the advertisement, in another
colnmn, of Col! Clarke, preparatory to
putting twenty miles of the road un
der contract at once.
In this connection, we would say
to the people immediately interested
in this great work, that farther delay
to discharge their whole doty in pro
moting the enterprise, by the sub
8cription of stock and the prompt
payment of installments when due
is withont the shadow of an excuse,
and we hope the Directory, in their
purpose io go ahead with the work,
will be encouraged and sustained hv
the people along the line of the road,
and likewise by all others to be effect,
ed- favorably by the success of the
project.
Nor can we see why the monied
men of Savannah, and especially the
A. & G. R. R. Co., continue to with
hold from this undertaking their ma
terial and substantial aid. The s.tc-
cessof the A. & B. Railroad can never
be assured should this road be push
ed through immediately to Lumpkin;
nor can the Golf road hope to secure
s feeder that will be of greater im
portance to it than this road will be
when finished.
We merely throw out these passing
remarks for the consideration of those
snroassed by few. even of hoary age. to whom they are addressed, and we
ditchers reported favorably from hope they wtll not fail to give them
nsSvaH portions^ the Conference-! the del.ben.fe attention their utfpor-
