JULY 23.
Armed Fishermen.—The Gloucester, Mass.,
Telegraph says—
‘‘Quite a number of our fishing vessels have
jailed this week for the Bay of St. Lawrence.
Altogether about forty vessels are there, or on
their way, belonging to this port. Some of them
are armed. We shall probably begin to have
news from the Bay before many days have
passed.”
The Mississippi Bonds. —The Sonthern and
Western papers are exhorting Mississippi to pay
her repudiated bonds, both for her own sake and
that of the country, as well as in justice to the
greatly wronged bondholders. They remind
her that her projected works of internal im
provement will require the use of some credit,
and that no-body will trust her while the pres
ent stain rests upon her character. It was re
marked, when her reputation was first made
known to the public, the time would come when
she would be thankful for the privilege of pay
ing her debts. She is abundantly able to pay
them, and has no excuse for her delinquency,
which is satisfactory even to herself. —Baltimore
Sun.
Mrs. Rebecca M. Smith, wife of Justice John
L. Smith, died at Washington a few days since,
in consequence of effects produced upon her by
the false report, on the 4th instant, of the loss
of the steamer Baltimore, (which went to Vir
ginia on a pleasure excursion) and the appre
hended death of her husband in consequence, it
being cruelly rumored that all the passengers had
perished. ■
Rain. —We have Iteen blessed, since our last
issue, not only with jgood showers, but once or
twice with the best rains since early in the
spring. We hear the fact mentioned amongst
those acquainted, that} now generally con
ceded there will be ejMg\\ made. So mote it
be. —Cassville Standard. 2 1st inst.
Notice to Teachers. —We are requested to
state that teachers are needed for the Cassville

NAH AND AUGUSTA.
BY THE FASHION fe,
LINE
IN offering the services of the steamer FASHION,
(the first boat of this line) to the merchants of
Georgia and Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee,
wo would ask for her that patronage which her
construction and light draught of water merits.
The Fashion is a home enterprise and owned ex
clusively by Capt T. N. Philpot (her commander)
and myself, whose entire attention will be given to
the interest of her patrons.
This boat was built in this city, and great care
has been taken in hor construction to make her
worthy of the trade for which she is intended.
Her capacity is about 2000 bales Cotton, her
draught es water only 13 inches, which will enable
her at all seasons of the year, to deliver her freight
promptly.
Her entire cargo will be taken between decks,
which will not only prevent damage to goods in
case of snagging, but will add much to the condi
tion of packages discharged from her. Mr. M. A.
Cohen is the agent of this line in Savannah, where
suitable wharves and warehouse have been provi
ded ir. a central situation for the reception of Cot
ton, Merchandize, Ac.
The Fashion will run in connection with the
New York and Philadelphia steamship, pelivering
goods at this point in five days from either of those
cities. JOHN A. MOORE.
