BY JAMES GARDNER, JR. evening edition. THURSDAY EVENING, 4 O'CLOCK. DAILY CONSTITUTIONALIST' k REPUBLIC. m .. JULY 30. It is not Always May. The sun is bright, the sir is clear, The darting swallows soar and sing, And from the stately elms I hear The blue bird prophesying spring. So blue yon winding river flows, It seems an outlet from the sky, Where, waiting till the west wind blows, The freighted clouds at anchor lie. All things are new; the buds, the leaves That gild the elm tree’s nodding crest, And even the nest beneath the eaves — There are no birds in last year's nest! All things rejoice in youth and love, The fullness of their first delight. And learn from the soft heavens above The melting tenderness of night. Maiden, that road'st this simple rhyme, Enjoy thy youth, it will not stay; Enjoy the fragrance of thy prime, For oh, it is not always May! Enjoy the spring of love and youth, To some good angel leave the rest; For time will teach thee soon tho truth, Thero arc no bird? in last year's nest! How to Detect Counterfeits. 1. Examine the appearance of a bill—the geuine have a general dark appearance. 2. Examine the vignette, or picture in the middle of the top ; see if the sky or back ground looks clear and transparent, or soft and even, and not scratchy. 3. Examine well the face ; see if the ex pressions are distinct and easy, natural and life like, particulaily the eyes. 4. See if ihe drapery or dress fits well, and shows the folds distinctly. 5. Examine the medallion, ruling and heads, and circlar ornaments around the figures, &c. Seeifthey are regular, smooth, and uniform, not scratchy. This work, in the genuine, looks as if raised on the paper, and cannot be per fectly imitated. 6. Examine the principal line of letters or name of the bank. See if they are all upright, perfectly true and even ; or if slooping, of a uniform slope. 7. Carefully examine the shade or parallel ruling on the face or outside of the letters, &c. See if it is clear, and looks as if colored with a brush. The fine and parallel lines in the gen uine are of equal size, smooth and even ; coun terfeits look as if done with a file. S. Observe the round handwriting engraved on the bill, which should be black, equal in size and distance, of a uniform slope, and smooth. This is in genuine notes invariably well done, and looks very perfect. In counterfeits it is seldom so, but often looks stiff, as if done with a pen. 9. Notice the imprint or engraver’s name, which is always near the border or end of the note, and is always alike, letters small, upright, and engraved very perfectly. Counterfeiters seldom do it well. Note.— lt was remarked by Stephen Bur roughs, before he died, that two things could not be perfectly counterfeited—one was the dye work, or portrait, medallion heads, vignette, &c., and the other the shading, or ruling above the letters. —Bank Note Reporter. Two in Heaven. 'You have two children V said I. 1 1 have four,’ was the reply; ‘ tw’o on earth and two in Heaven.’ Thus spoke the mother! Still hers!—only ‘ gone before!’ Still remembered, loved and cherished, by the hearth and the board; their place not yet tilled ; even though their successors draw life Irom the same faithful breast where their dying heads were pillowed. ‘ Two in Heaven !’ Safely housed from storm and tempest: no sickness there, nor drooping heads, nor fading eyes, nor weary feet. By the green pastures, tended by the Good Shepherd, linger the little lambs of the Heaven!}’ fold. ‘ Two in Heaven !’ Earth less attractive ! Eternity nearer! In visible cords, drawing the maternal soul up wards. ‘ Still small voices, ever whispering ‘ come,” to the world-weary spirit. ‘Two in Heaven!’ ‘ Mother of angels.’ Walk softly! Holy eyes watch their footsteps ! Cherub forms bend to listen ! Keep thy spirit free from earth taint; so shalt thy soul go to them, though they may not return to thee. Fanny Fern. Remedies for Diarrhcea.— A subscriber has handed us the following remedies for this very prostrating disease. We know’nothing of their efficacy, but give them with the hope that they may alleviate the sufferings of some. Ist. Take a pint of the best 4th proof Cognac Brandy—put into it as much gum of Camphor as it will dissolve—take ten drops of this solu tion and ten drops of Laudanum in a tablespoon full of strong spice tea. one dose every hour— this is the dose for an adult—for a child it should be somewhat less. 2nd. Take a half pint of good apple vinegar— put with it one table spoon-full of common salt, and stir till it is dissolved. Take one half of this at the tirst dose. In three hours take one-third ol the remainder, and repeat the dose every three hours. Lnder either prescription, the patient’s diet should be confined to boiled milk thickened with hour and a little pounded spice. Os this eat often and but sparingly. The milk should be taken at about blood-heat. Me repeat that we know nothing of these remedies, but think they may be serviceable. M e should recommend, however, that they be taken under proper medical advice.— Edgefield Advertiser. Very Shrewd.— There lives, not a thousand miles from Gotham, a dealer in small wares, whose greatest fear is of being overreached. He goes without milk in his coffee, in dread of buy ing a spoonful of Croton, and never pays for a new’spaper, lest it should not be published to the end ot the year. His little shop is without gas for he has no faith in the meter, and he even dips his ow’n candles, to insure that they are all tallow. In one thing he is liberal ; he makes large purchases of counterfeit detectors, and buys an Extra if there is any whisperings of a Woken bank, A neighbor of his was imposed upon, the other day, with a bank note which had been ingeniously altered from “one” to “five;” and our dealer has been on the watch ever since, for fear of a similar imposition. The other day, a young girl from the country stepped into his little store, and purchased a pair of stockings, pfferingaone dollar note in payment. The old inai'} eyed the girl so sharply, that her face be came suffused with blushes, and this was to him an acknowledgment of guilt. How’ dare you offer me this ?” he asked in an angry tone. “ 1 thought it was good, ” she replied timidly, “What is the matter with it?” asked a by stander, who had been attracted by the dispute ; “ it looks like a genuine note.” “ Genuine enough,” said jthe shopkeeper, his face crimson with passion, “ but don’t you see ? It’s a one altered from a twenty !” N. Y. Journal Commerce. A gentleman from South Carolina, was in this , ■'ection some days ago, for the purpose of buying co m. Not getting it, however, at a price that met his views, he went to Tennessee, where he found that article commanding the same price. Returning again to Georgia, he was about pur chasing, \vhen he received a letter from Carolina, informing him that abundance of rain had fallen’ and they would be able to make corn enough at home. This j s the case, now, in every section and State, so far we can hear.— Camille Stand £l)c 1 aito (Constitutionalist ani> NemtMtc ©fttfrat TO COTTON PLANTERS. HAVING secured the services of Mr. G. T. OGLESBY as the superintendent, together with other experienced mechanics, I have establish ed a large COTTON GIN FACTORY, at the She als ot Ogeechec, Ga., where I am prepared to make and furnish the Planter with the best article in tho way of a COTTON GIN now produced m this time, devoted exclusively in the shop, and seeing to the putting up of every Gin under his special direction, and attaching all the improvements which he (Mr. Oglesby,) has got ten up within the last two years, I am satisfied I can supersede any made heretofore, in quantity, quality and durability. All old Gins, (when sent to the shop,) will he repaired, and all the improvements attached if de sired, at a reasonable charge. The new Gin will he delivered at tho Planters’ nearest depot, or at their residence if desired, free of charge. Prompt attention paid to all communications addressed to meat the above office. THOMAS J. CREELY. SHOALS OF OGEECHEE, GA., ) March 5, 1853. ) To my old Patrons and Friends. As there has been some complaint of my Gins, made during the last two years : an explanation to you in relation to this matter is duo Mr. Cheely. I have fceen absent a great portion of this time, on a visit to the North, experimenting and getting up a new Gin, as well as improving, the original Saw Gin. together with suitable machinery for this business, to its highest perfection, as will be ac knowledged by all who have used them, both in durability and quality of Cotton. I shall now devote my individual attention in the shop, and see that every part of each Gin is put up in the neatest possible manner : iu short, I shall make the orginal Oglesby Gin, which has been so celebrated for durability and fine Cotton, having taken the premium in this State as woll as that of South Carolina in every instance except one, and thou it was said by foreign dealers that my Cotton was of a superrior quality. In conclusion, my late improvements added to ray former Gins, cannot fail to give entire satisfaction. I will alter any old Gins, (not too much worn,) to do better work than it ever did before.
