BY JAMES GARDNER. JR. evening edition. TUESDAY EVENING, 4 O'CLOCK. BY TELEGRAPH. Reported for the Constitutionalist k Republic. Suicide. We learn from a letter from Social Circle, da [ ted the 31 st ult. that a highly respectable citizen I of Walton county, Mr. C. W. Buchanan, com ; mitted suicide on the 30th. by shooting himself with a shot gun. He died instantly. From | what we can learn, he had been partially in sane for some time, and attempted to cut his j throat in March last. We regret to learn that ! he leaves behind him a wife and four children. Duel near Charleston. Chaleston, August 2. A Duel was fought this morning, near the | city, between John Dunovant of Chester district, i and J. Davidson, Legare, of Charleston. The | latter was killed the first fire. Alleged Mail Robbery—A few days ago, a young man named Wm. Tinnen, was arrested [ in Fayetteville, (N. C..) and committed to jail on a charge of robbing the mail. This is pro bably a most important discovery, as the rob beries of the mail between Greensborough and Raleigh have been very numerous for the last few month?. Augusta Market, August 3. REMARKS.—In our last monthly review, we noticed that the crops, particularly that of Corn, was suffering much from the drought, but since that period wo have been favored with copious rains in almost every section of country heard front, and the appearance of the Corn crop has de cidedly improved. Where it was supposed not more than a fourth of a Corn crop would be pro duced, there is now every prospect of two-thirds to a full crop being made—the latter with late plant ings. At any rate there is no longer a dread of a scarcety, and the speculative foeling which existed at our last monthly review in this article has gra dually given way, and Com can now be purchased in this market at 00 a 00 cents per bushel, with a lower tendency. The Cotton crop has also im proved in appearance, but some of our plantors in this soction of the State are complaining of too much rain, and express their feaTs should the weather continue as it has been the past two or three weeks, that the plant will take a now growth and shod its present fruit. It is, however, too early in the season to express an opinion of the growing crop, it being subject to so many contingence3 be tween this time and frost. Should we be favored with a favorable season the crop in Middle Geor gia will, no doubt prove a fair average one. We see by the Albany (Ga.) Patriot, of the 29th ult., that a balj:3 of new Cotten was sold in that mar ket on the 27th, at 11 cents per lb. This is not however, to be taken as a criterion of the forward state of tbo crop. In the South-western part of Georgia, they have not suffered as much from drought as in other sections of tho State, and the plantgenerhlly matures earlier than in the Middle, or upper portions of the State. The lirst hale of new cotton last year was receiv ed at New Orleans on the 2d August. Experience has proven that the date of receiving the first halo of new cotton furnishes no criterion forjudging of the probable yield of the growing crop. By our monthly tables published below, it will he seen that the Receipts of Cotton have increased at New Orleans... 217,086 Texas. 21,040 North Carolina 3,280 Virginia.... 2,720—244,132 Deduct Decrease at Savannah 6,880 Charleston 14,742 Mobile ~. 6,700 Florida 8,314 —36,636 Total 1ncrea5e......... 207,496 The Shipments show a small excess to all quar ters, as will be seen by our tables, viz. To Great Britain 61,915 France 2 365 Other Foreign Ports 1,246 Coatwise Ports 2,668 68,694 In the above shipments are not included that shipped coastwise from Texas, which is 48,671 bales this year, against 39,960 last. The stock on hand at all the stripping ports and two of the principal inland cities, show an excess of bales. COTTON.—We have no change to notice in tho Cotten'market, since our last. It remains in a quiet state. The receipts the past month have been very light, as have also been the shipments. Os the present stock on hand the greater portion is inscuond hands, and as the manufacturing es tabliihments ii£the immediate vicinity are sup. plied a month or six weeks in advance, there are few or no buyers left. Holders show no disposition te sell at present prices, as there is little or none offering, we omit quotations. RECEIPTS OF COTTON, From ljf September , 1852, to the latest dates received 1453. 1852. TO COTTON PLANTERS. HAVING secured the services of Mr. G. T. OGLESBY as the superintendent, togother with other experienced mechanics, I have establish ed a large COTTON GIN FACTORY, at tho She als ot Ogcechce, Ga., whero I am prepared to make and furnish the Planter with the best article in the way of a COTTON GIN now produced in this country. Mr. Oglesby’s time, dovoted exclusively in the shop, and seeing to tho putting up of every Gin under his special direction, and attaching all the improvements which he (Mr. Oglesby,) has got ten up within the last two years, I am satisfied I can supersede any made heretofore, in quantity* quality and durability All old Gins, (when sent to the shop,) will b<» repaired, and all the improvements attached if de sired, at a reasonable charge. Tho new Gin will be delivered at tho Planters’ nearest depot, cr at their rcsidenco if desired, free of charge. Prompt attention paid to all communications addressed to mo at the above office. THOMAS J. CHEELY. SHOALS OF OGEECHEE, GA., ) March 5, 1853. ) To my old Patrons and Friends. As there has been some complaint of my Gins, made during the last two years : an explanation to you in relation to this matter is duo Mr. Ciieely. I have been absent a great portion of this time, on a visit to the North, experimenting and gotting up a new Gin, as woll as improving, the original Saw Gin, together with suitable machinery for this business, to its highest perfection, as will be ac knowledged by all who have used them, both in durability and quality of Cotton. I shall now devote my individual attention in the shop, and see that every part of each Gin is put up in the neatest possible manner : in short, I shall make the orginal Oglesby Gin, which has been so celebrated for durability and fine Cotton, having taken the premium in this State as well as that of South Carolina in every instance except ono. and then it was said by foreign dealers that my Cotton was of a superrior quality. In conclusion, my late improvements added to my former Gins, cannot fail to give entire satisfaction. I will alter any old Gins, (not too much worn,) to do better work than it ever did before. Yours, most respectfully, march 15 lv G. T. OGLESBY. GEORGIA. MARBLE WORKS. J. G. Haulm, 1 Vm. M. Hurl irk, Geo. L. Su mney, (SUCCESSORS TO A. ATKINSON & CO.)
