United States District Court.
The United Ssates District court, for the
Northern District oi Georgia, commenced its ses
sion at Marietta, on Monday the 12th inst, Hou.
John C. NicoJ, District Judge presiding. John
R, Johnson, Esq., Marshal tor the District of
Georgia, and Geo. S. Owens, U. S. District At
torney were in attendance. Gentleman of the
Bar present and engaged in causes before the
court,were Hon. R. M. Charlton, and Henry
Williams, Esq ,of Savannah, William W. Ar
nold, Esq.,oi Zebuioii, A. T. Burke, Esq, of
Carrollton, Osborne A. Lochrane, Esq., oi Ma
con. Hon. C. J. McDonald, A. J. Hansell, Esq.,
(,’eo. D. Kice, Esq , and i\\ B. Knight, Esq,,
of Marietta. Several important civil cases were
reposed 01. Smith, a mail carrier between
Coi'ing'oii and Mdledge vdie, charged with era
bmling from the mad, will probably be brought
up for trial to-day.
The District Court for the Northern District
ol Georgia, in addition to the ordinary jurisdic
tion and powers ol a district couit, has also Cir
cuit Court jurisdiction. Hence it has original
cognizance w hen the matter in dispute exceeds
live hundred dollars, srid the suit is between a
citizen of tne district and a citizen of another
State. By an act of last Congress regulating
fees and costs in Circuit and District Courts, a
docket fee is provided for attorneys, varying
from live to twenty dollars — Marietta Advocate .

Judge Joimso.v. —On Thursday last, Hon. H.
V. Johnson, the democratic candidate for Gov.
error, addressed a portion of the citizens of this
county at Marietta. That his speech was able
ana well received by the people, it is almost
needless to say. Judge Johnson was greeted
with repealed applause during the progress of his
address. We regret that more of his opponents
could not have heard him, as we do not see how
they could have resisted the close reasoning and
conclusive arguments in support of democratic
principles and a democratic administration.
Tiie demociats who heard him separated with
increased confidence in their candidate and the
success of their cause. Cobb county will give
a handsome majority for Johnson and the demo
cratic ticket.— lb.
Not a Word of it so ?
We notie? in the last Recorder, a short com
munication imm "a native Georgian and an
old Union man, 5 ' (at least so he styles himself,)
dated at Charleston, S. C. The writer says he
has just returned from a trip through upper Geor
gia, and is “inclined to believe that Mr. Jenkins’
majority will be large.” He also states that he
"saw a number of union democrats, who may be
looked upon as negative supporters of Judge
Johnson, but whose influence is decidedly against
him. This individual seems very deeply in
terested in the election of Jenkins, and living
out oi the state, he may be induced to believe,
( >y some who like himself, know nothing about
j* 1 that Jenkins does really stand some qhance ;
,|]t we assure the gentleman, that if he is indeed
interested, he had better not believe all the
ports he hears in favor of Mr. Jeukius’ election,
lor r will only add to the stock of disappoint
ment tvhich is already in store for him. We
expect ti.e gentleman’s “general tour,” as he
c *'b h. did i.ot take him a hundred yards from
rail road, and the “many union democrats,”
he saw’ throwing their influence against
■Unson, were very likely, travellers like himself,
'tying to get back to then mammas.
•\°w we live in upper Georgia—are acquain

and we have failed to meet up with those
democrats. They are not here. The
euocraey of upper Georgia are warm in their

u'wr party anu their principles with too much
(.(‘Vticn, to be driven from the support of their
candiu ate by the slanderous reports of their well
inown enemies.

jY a re ashameo °f their candidate. I saw one
‘ :n °crotic Editor, who sports Johnsan’s name at
‘ ls Mast head, but who w,Jt not vote for him.”
