At the spring, they [ U|^ ',i a encampment of half-breeds who ■°'H' jst"returned from the chase, and whose 1 Iws 1 ws uaJ just finished their ablutions in the spring hard by. The curiosity of the v 4 Cabman was aroused by some remark ‘ hjjo tni'j-:ct which led him to make inquiries. T e iiall-oieeds were disposed to humor the old 1 ,«■ and they gave him a lo°g account of the of those properties in the spring—how it Vi ' ; impregnated many generations back by the Great spirit for the purpose of diiving out evil Loin which breeded in the mighty cavern, /j.. |oWn as the Devil’s Bathing House, from the i -! that Rocky creek tumbles into it, and the ’•r-y fills the vacuum below with a gloomy L) and which were wont to possess the bo di,.i of ail, male and female, who ventured near tL- abrupt prescipices. This virtue was effec tual until the demons became too ambitious and as-Mred to invade the “ happy hunting ground,” ar ‘l G P aan to be so quarrelsome and brutish, that the Greet Hunter was incensed against them mare than ever, and dipping a bundle of arrows in the spring to render them effectual against spirits, he made a general attack and extermina te! them to the last. This warfare with the de mons, connected the name of the Prince of De mons’whicb it bears to this day. she virtue of the water was found to be dif frrent after this event, and many years rolled on before it was discovered what was the peculiar nature ol the pool. One day, an old virago in the tribe, notorious lor turbulence and disorder, stooping over to drink, fell in, with a partial im mersion. When she recovered herself, amid the mirth of the tribe, her voice, heretofore harsh aiid snappie r, mirubile dictu, was soft and most agreeable, and so marked was the transformation of her manner and disposition, that it led to in vestigation, and soon became known to the tribe. For a long time, this remarkablae virtue, acted only on those having Indian blood in their veins, but the kindness of the early missionaries, so wrought upon the graces of the Great Spirit, that be extended the blessing for the benefit of wl ite ladies, which is true to this generation. The half-breeds related many interesting tra ditions connected with this fountain to the ex ploring party, which acted like the oracles of Delphi on the simple mind of the North Caroli inan tobacco man, and it took him a long time to digest the facts. Finally he began to mutter to himself, and more audibly in the end, about the value of his wagon load, and how happy he would sacrifice ail “if only his Judy were here;”‘’if only Judy could bathe in this wa ter.” To our henpecked brethren who have been so foolish as to }oke themselves in miserable, in stead of happy bonds ot wedlock, we will say go.seek the "moving of this benevolent pool, 5 ’ and baptize their weaker vessels, that the re mainder of their days may be sweetened and hallowed.— Chattanooga Advertiser. Speech of Judge Johnson In Macon. Od last Thursday night Judge Johnson de livered a speech in Macon, which for power of expression, force of argument, or aptness of il lustration, we have not heard equalled for many a day. The room was filled with a highly re spectable and attentive audience, who during the entire address, gave frequent and hearty to kensot pleasure and satisfaction. The rotten platform which the u Conservative party” re centiy erected at Milledgeviiie, under the direc tion of that ingenious Mr. Robert Toombs, quaked, and trembled, and fell to pieces under the powerful and well aimed blows of the Democratic candidate. He repelled with indig nation the charge of disunion which had been made against him, and though he had no wish to deny that he was an member of the o<d Southern Rights party, he proved by the record tuat he bad never favored secession as a remedy for tire evils of the Compromise. He exposed the shallow artifice, by which the opposition, a miserable system ot garbled extracts, seek to excite the animosity of the Union De mocracy against him, and invoked mutual for bearance and reconciliation with a forcible elo quence which convinced the judgment and ex v -eo the approbation of his hearers. He passed ■urn tnese personal explanations (to which he Ueen driven by the repeated misrepresenta mns ot his opponents.) to the defence and vin ■icdtion ot Gen. Pierce. He avowed that the fluent had appointed no man to office who jo not stand upon the Georgia Platform, and c..a,ler:ged the world to produce any proof to the ; 0 '.r2iy. And then in a strain ot mingled log j ar id satire, which for many months will haunt ' e recollection of the Conservative gentry, he ■ posed the inconsistency of those men who dare 3| tack the Administration, alter they them hail endorsed, and vindicated, and besla adulation, Daniel Webster and Mil l!lmore, who never faltered in their devo atv ° f ie P r ‘ Rt 'iple of Freesoil.
