SPECTACLES.
XF YOU will and must wear SPECTACLES, got
them exactly suited to the eye, or they will do
moro harmtlhim good. THE OPTOMETER is an
instrument invented by Prof. Stampfer, of the
Polytechnical School of Vienna, for the purpose of
measuring with scientific exactness the degree of
convexity the eye had lost by age, and it applies
accurate numbers of glasses to counteract tho de
fect. None, then, need hereafter complain that
their spectacle? pain their eyes, who call on us to
be fitted with Spectacles. Como and see for your
selves. Now, though we have taken much pains to
obtain this instrument, as well to inform ourselves
with reference to the application of Glasses to
remedy tho defects of vision, we take pleasuro in
informing our patrons and the public, that we have
become sole agents of Messrs. Ball & Co., for the
sale of their recently invented Cups, which render
spectacles entirely uselrss, even to the most Aged
persons, where eves have lost their convoxity from
ago We append, in favor of this invention, the
following letter from Prof. Finnoy, of Oberlin Col
lege.
Tho fact in regard to the improvement in my
sight by the use of your Cups are these :
I was wearing GLASSES of 18 inches focus —I
have had them changed twice; and am now wri
ting in a bad light with glasses of 48 inches focus,
which is* the lowest magnifying! power used by
Messrs. Pike. I can now rord common print with
ease with tho lowest magnifying glasses. I havo
usod them agreeably to your directions about four
weeks. I see not why I may not expect, in a short
time, to havo my sight quite restored by continu
ing tho use of the cups I cannot but regard this
discovery as of groat value. Yours, truly,

P. S. lamin my sixtieth year, and havo worn
glasses about ten years.
Feb’y. 7, 1853. —Prof. Finney writes—l have,
for the last six or eight mopths, used them (the
Cups) but seldom. The improvod state of my
sight rendering me forgetful and neglectful of their
steady uso. I havo received murh benefit and no
perceptible injury whatever from their use.
With my blinds open I read comfortably, and
write easily without glasses.

and mysolf, whose entire attention will bo given to
the interest of her patrons.
This boat was built in this city, and great care
has been takon in hor construction to make her
worthy of the trado for which she is intended.
Her capacity is about 2000 bales Cotton, her
draught of water only 13 inches, which will enable
her at all seasons of the year, to deliver herfroight
promptly.
