Sales have been reported to us this week, from wharf, and at South Carolina Railroad depot, in t lots of 100 sacks and upwards, at $1.70, cash. Re tailing from stores at $1.75. ' NAILS.—Meet with ready sales at our quota r tions by the quantity. By the keg or small quantity of course prices are higher. STOCKS.—The only transactions in Stocks this > week that have come to our knowledge, was the sale of 80 shares Georgia Rail Road at $lO3. Tho present tightness of tho money maiket has not . only a depressing influence on Stacks, but on trade in general. So fearful are our Banks, (if wo are correctly informed! of each other, that by the pre sent line of policy pursued by all, it is difficult to get the best short time paper done, or a draft at short date on Savannah or Charleston discounted. This, in our opinion, is suicidal policy on their part. We have in Augusta some five Banks, with large capitals, but under present state of things we would ha ve more money in circulation if wc had only one or two, for then neither would stand in the other's way. Under the present system of doing business, each Bank seems to be fearful of the other, and at tho very time our merchants and citizens want ac commodations, they are not to be had. The effect of this will be, in the course of three or four weeks, instead of the interior of Georgia being supplied with Georgia money, that of South Carolina will take its place, for every day thousands upon thou sands find their way to this city, and are scattered throu ;h the State to purchase Cotton, when bills at 30 and 60 days, drawn on Charleston, were pre viously used by our merchants in transacting their business. It seems hard that our merchants at Home should be deprived of the means of doing their local business, when our banks can send their funds abroad, for the benefit ot other communi ties. EXCHANGE—Our Banks aro drawing on New York and other Northern cities at 4 per cent, prexn. for Sight Drafts. FREIGHTS.—We have no change to notice in tho rates to either Savannah or Charleston. The river is now in fair boating order. Cotton to Charleston 75, to Savannah 50 cents per bale. Spmnl Hatters. Bank of Augusta. 21st Nov. 1853.
