Cotton in Mexico. —“El Heraldo,” a Mexi
can journal, publishes a communication from
San Cristobal, announcing that the experiment
of raising cotton there is succeeding most admi
rably, and tnat picking will commence in a few
days. It says :— Up to this time not a single
plant has suffered from any cause. The field i 3
most beautiful in its appearance, the plant grow,
ing to the height of a yard and a half, and are
full of bolls, many of them having as many as
one hundred; the superintendent says he has
never seen such excessive production, not even
on the best cotton plantations in the United
Slates.
Religion in England —lt appears from the
British Census, 1854—including only England
and Wales—that the Established Church has at
tached to it 14,077 churches, and that all other
religious sects have 20,390 chapels, making in
all 34.467 places of public worship, including
Mormons and isolated congregations. Os the
seven most numerous dissenting bodies, the
number of Chapels is stated as follows:
Catholics.. 570 Unitarians 229
Congregationalists. 3,244 Wesleyan Methodists
Baptists (all divi- (all divisions)... 11,07
sions) 2,489 Calvinistic Metho-
Society of Friends. .381 dists 800
Health of Georgia. —The typhoid fever is
reported to be very prevalent in Mecklenberg
and Gaston counties, Georgia. A writer in the
Southern Presbyterian states that “ there are
fully as many dea hs, in proportion to the popu
lation, as were in New Orleans from the last
epidemic.”— Sav. Georgian.
The Columbus Enquirer asks—“ Will our
friends of the Georgian inform us by what pro
cess these two old and most respectible counties
of the venerable North State became subject to
the juaisdiction of Georgia—whether by joint
resolution of annexation, conquest or land slide?
We hope soon to be enlightened.”
Arrival of the Knoxville —A despatch to
the agents in Savannah, Messrs. Paddelford
Fay & Co., announces the arrival at New York
of the steamship Knoxville, in 55 hours. All
well.
South-western Railroad. —The carson this
Road says the Americus Republican are making
their daily trips to a point within twelve miles
of this place. Passengers can now breakfast at
Macon and dine in Americus.
The Importance of one Vote. —Thos. H t
Benton in his u Thirty Years View',” says, that
Gen. Jackson was elected Major General in the
Tennessee Militia by one vole— the battle of New
Orleans, the Creek Campaign, and perhaps the
Presidency, being the consequenee of that one
vote!
Michigan is entitled to the honor of being the
first State in the Union offering the student from
all portions of the United States complete courses
of collegiate instruction free of charge. The
income from her University fund is now about
$25 000 per annum, and is increasing. Ample
buildings have been erected at Ann Arbor for
the Medical -nd Literary Colleges, a town re
markable for its health and cheapness of liv
ing.
In New Orleans large numbers of citizens are
acting upon a recent discovery by a celebrated
French physician, (Dr. Burq.) wherety cholera
it is said, is prevented, by wearing a band of
sheet copper three inches wide and six inches
long around the neck, or on the arm as bracelets
Dr. Buiq has, by investigation, discovered the
fact that all workers in copper, &c., are always
free irom cholera. It is a simple thing, and may
be tried at little expense.
Fire! —At about 2 o’clock yesterday morn
ing, the extensive works of Wm. H. Brocks &
Co., known as the‘ Variety Works,” were found
to be on fire, and from the combustible nature of
the buildings, as well as of the materials they
contained, were soon entirely consumed. The
Winter Palace Mills and the buildings of the
Eagle Manufacturing Company were in danger,
but saved by the exertions of oui efficient fire com
panies without material damage. We are advis
ed that the estimated loss to Messrs. Brooks &
Co., is thirty thousand dollars, and that they
were not insured. This blow must fall peculi
arly hard upon them, following, as it does, upon
large losses accruing from damage by the fresh
et es last year. There is little doubt, we are
informed, that the fire was the work of an incen
diary.— Columbus Enquirer , 2 5th inst.
The Crps —lnformation from several directions
ledds u-to believe that much impiovement in
the crops, both of cotton and corn, has resulted
from the rains. In fact, in many sections, par
ticularly South and West of us, the general pros
pect has not been more encouraging for years.
We hope we may be spared the record of disas
ters, such as rust, boll worm and caterpillar,
which so frequently occur to blight the hopes
ol the planter, even when his anticipations are
brighest.— lb.

ROGER S LIVERWORT AND TAR.
FOR the complete cure of Coughs, Colds, Influenza,
Asthma, Bronchitis, Spitting of Blood, and all oth
er Lung Complaints tending to Consumption.
This preparation is get ting into use all over our coun
try. The numerous letters we receive from our vari
ous agents, informing us of cures effected in the : r im
mediate neighborhoods, warrant us in saying it is one
of the best, if not the very best, Cough Medicine now
before the public. It almost invariably relieves, and
not unfrequently cures the very worse cases When all
other Cough preparations have failed, this has relieved
the patient, as Druggists, dealers in Medicines, and
Physicians can testify. Ask the Agent in your nearest
town, what has been his experience of the effects of
this medicine. If he has been selling it for any length
of time he will tell you
IT IS THE BEST MEDICINE EXTANT.
Below we give a few extracts from letters we have
received lately, regarding the virtues of this medipine.
Dr. S. S. Oslin, of Knoxville, Ga., says : ' ’ I have been
using your Liverwort and Tar very extensively in mv
practice for three years past, and it is with pleasure !
state my belief in its superiority over all other articles
with which I am acquainted, for which it is recom
mended.”
Messrs Fitzgerald & Benners, writing f omWaynes
ville, N. C., says : u The Liverwort and Tar is becoming
daily more popular in this Country, and we think just
ly so. All who have tried it speak in commendable
terms of it, and say it is very beneficial in alleviating
the complaints for which it ih recommended.”
Our Agent in Pickens District, S. C., Mr. S. R. McFall, i 1
assures us “ that he uses it with great benefit in his own *
family, and recommends it to his neighbors.” lie gives
an instance of a Nogro woman, in his vicinity, who had
been suffering with disease ot the Lungs for years, at
tended with severe Cough, who was relieved by the
Liverwort and Tar.
Such are the good reports we hear of this Medicine
from all parts of the South. For a report of the sur
prising cures it has performed in the Western and
Northern and Eastern btates, we would invite the suf
ering patient to read the pamphlet which acoompanies
each bottle. To all. we say. have hope, have hope!
TRY THE MEDICINE !! — Be Warned in Season ! !
And neglect not that Cough which is daily weakening
your constitution, irritating your Throat and Lungs,
and inviting on that dread disease. Consumption, when
so soothiDg and healing a Remedy can be obtained as
Dr. Rogers’ Syrup of Liverwort and Tar.
Beware of Counterfeits and Base Imitations ! —The
genuine article is signed Andrew Rogers, on the en
graved wrapper around each bottle.

STAMPEDE MIXTURE,
Fur the Fever and Ague and Chagrts Fever
THE PRuPKIE TOR of this Medicine will state,
without hesitation or fear of contradiction!
that the Stampede Mixt re has cured more per
sons, where it has been introduced, than any other
medicine in use for the above d seases. This med
icine has neither Arsenic or quinine in its compo
sition, all of the ingredients are of a perfectly
healthy character and highly stimulating and in
vigorating in their tendency. Persons while using
this medicine will not be affected by exposure to
water or a damp atmosphere no more than when in
their usual hoalth. Planters in sections of the 1
country where tho Ague prevails, will do well to N
adopt this medicine, as the patitnt is not obliged
to lay by while under treatment, and they may bo
assured of a speedy cure. The Proprietor eould
introduce thousands of certificates from those of
the highest respectability, but prefers saying to the
Sick buy one bottle and you will have the iDfalli
