Death of the Scotch Giant. —We learn
from the Laporte Whig of the 19th ult., that the
well known Scotch Giant, who has travelled
through the country for some years for the pur
pose of exhibitions, died in that place the day
previous. He had stopped at the Teegarden
House with his wife, somewhat overcome with
the heat and the dust. During the evening he
asked tor some water, and immedia'ely fell dead
upor the floor. His remains were taken to his
"■’sidenca in Wisconsin.
We iearn from the Lake Superior Journai of
the 15th ult., that a laige amount of copper is
almost daily coming forward from the mines,-
and that a large number of exploring parties are
constantly on the move making new discoveries.
The canal is now progressing with unusual ear

Mike Walsh and Mr. Seward, of Georgia, had
a fight to-day in the House post-office. Mike
was the aggressor, and was severely handled.—
The difficulty ended where it began, and both
were in the House this evening.
This has been the hottest day ol the season in
Washington.
Cincinnati, Aug. I. Late from the Salt Lake ,
6fC. — Tne St Louis papers of Saturday contain
late news from Sait Lake. A treaty has been
concluded between Bingham Young and the Pap,
“Utah and Pawnee Indians, which provides that
on no occasion whatever are Indians to make an
attack on Americans or Mormons, and they will
use all their influence to preveut depredations on
the property of emigrants or settlers.
The weather has been unusually cold.
Buffalo, July 31. — Deaths at Buffalo and Ni
agara Fails by Cholera —The deaths by cholera
in this city tor the week ending midnight Satur
day, were seventy-one, not including those at
the poor house. Os these, sixty died duiing the
first three days of the week. Sixty six were
foreigners, one traveller and four American resi
dents.
At the Falls, we learn indirec ly, that there
were 11 deaths on Friday and Saturday. We
have no report from the suspension bridge.
Large Strawberries —We find the follow
ing notice of mammoth specimens of this de
lightful fruit in a late number of the N. Y. Herald:
‘'Harrison County. N. J. July 27, 1854.
Noticing your correspondents account of the la
irous British Queen strawberries,some inches
iu circumference, from California, (success to her
efforts in the glorious cause of horticulture, how
much more truly glorious thaD all the feats on the
Baltic and Black Sea) allow’ me to state the
facts - , that a plate of the same variety was sent
to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Sat
urday exhibition the end of last month, two or
three ol which measured 81 inches in circum
ference ; they looked like tomatoes, and were
raised at the private garden of Sam 1 . G. Gustin,

Arrival of the Cars at Dykss’ Depoi.—
We understand that the cars arrived at the above
depot on the Jst iust. This depot is ouly
ten miles from Americus. The iion horse is
making rapid strides towaids our town. With
in a month or so we may look tor him in our
midst, when our ears wii! be saluted with the
shrill whistle of locomotives and rumbling of
iron wheels. This will he a great epoch in the
history of Americus, and the day ol the arrival
will be one of great interest to the citizens ol
our town and the surrounding country.—Ameri
cas (Ga) News.
The Weather, Health &c. —Within the
last lew days our town and the surrounding
country has been favored with fine and refresh
ing rains, the dense atmosphere has been Tari
ffed by eiectricty, and we now enjoy compari
tively cool and pleasant weather. The health
of our community, as far as we have been able
to learn, is as good as any part of South-West
ern Georgia. Considering theexessive heat that
Wk have had to endure tor some three weeks
back,- we aie really blessed in this particular,
and lew" cases of fever are in town, but they are
necessary concomitants of the season, and are
mild and easily managed. Americus will com
pare well with any point containing her pop
ulation in Georgia, in regard to health, &c.

CHARLESTON, Aug. 4 Cotton.— There was quite a
good demand for this article in the early part of the
previous week, and the transactions most generally
showed an irregular advance of about jc ; but the ini
proving tendency in prices checked the demand and
during the two days preceding the date of our last pub
lication the market was quiet, buyers having partially
withdrawn in consequence of the high pretensions of
sellers. There have been very few buyers in attend
ance during the week under review, and the market has
not only lost all the buoyancy that characterized the
transactions of an earlier period, but has for several
days been in a languid and drooping condition, al
though no positive reduction can be said to have been
established in prices. The quotations we offer below
will, we feel assured, approximate as nearly as possible
to the true state of the market at the close of business.
The aggregate amount of sales during the week fall
rather under 1000 bales, at prices ranging from 7 to
We quote Inferior 7@B; Ordinary to Good Ordinary Bj.

10|. For the higher grades we have no'quotation.s to
offer, in consequence of their great scarcity. The re
ceipts since our last comprise 5726 bales, the heaviest
received for some time back. The transactions in Long
Cotton have been confined to a few scattering lots
Floridas, at prices ranging from 15 to 22c. per pound.
Coyi —The receipts since our last comprise 1000
sacks Western, and 5700 do. from New York, which have
been sold at 95c. and $1 44 sack, including the sack.
Country Corn commands, in small lots, from 98c. to
$1.05 bushel, sackaincluded. The supply is limited,
and hence these high prices.
Flour. —There has been a fair demand for this article
since our last, and the greater portion of the supply,
which was by no means large, has been sold at prices
within the range of our quotations, principally how
ever, at S«;8 4 l for barrels, and 4.g4j for bags, which
are rather better rates than holders were able to realize
the previous week.
Bacon. —We have no new feature to notice in the
Bacon market. Sides, however, have been selling
principally at 7| «rjßc., and Shoulders 61@6jc.
Salt. —The demand, which has been limited, has been
supplied at prices within the range of present quota
tions, but principally at 1.15 and $1.20 per sack.
Sugars. —The Sugar market has been very quiet
since our last, and we have no transactions of conse
quence to report. The stock is principally in the hands
of jobbers, who are well supplied with a general as
sortment of qualities suited to the most severe tastes.
Coffee.—Vie note sales from first hands of about 700
► bags Rio, at a range of figures embracing 9j@ 10c.; and
about 200 bags Cuba, from 10 to lOjc.
Molasses. —The market has been very quiet since our
last. Some 800 barrels New Orleans, 300 of which are
intended for the interior, have come to hand, none of
which had been sold when we closed our report. Pre
sent quotations are nominal. Nothing has been done
in Cuba, beyond a few barrels to supply retail orders,,
at 19 and 20c. The last cargo sale was made at 17c.,
and 19c. for Muscovados.
Freights. —The rates to Liverpool remain the same as
previously quoted, viz: faffor Cotton in square and
’round bags, A vessel loading for Havre has completed
her cargo at lgljc. The New York rate continue at
20c. for Cotton.
SAVANNAH, August 3.— Cotton. —Arrived since the
27th ult., 627 bales Upland (all per Railroad,) and 2do.
Sea Islands. The exports for the same period amount
to 1,190 bales Upland, and 298 do. Sea Islands, viz: to
to New York. 941 biles Upland, and 298 do. Sea Islands;
to Philadelphia, 255 bales Upland—leaving on hand
and on shipboard, not cleared, a stock of 1.431 bales
Upland, and 624 do. Sea Islands, against 4,783 bales Up
land, and 139 do. Sea Islands at the same time last year.
The weather has been extremely hot all the week,
and every one has kept as quiet as possible. The total
sales of the week are but 173 bales, viz : Bat 74; 38 at
84; 9at 8$; Bat 8$; and 110 bales at 9 cents. On Mon
day evening we received foreign news by the steamship
Alps, and yesterday by the Canada.
We renew our quotations of last week, as we do not
hear of any change in prices. We quote :
Ordinary to Good Ordinary, 7 @ 8
Low Middling to Strict Midiffing, . ... 84@ 9
Good Middling, 9s@
Middling Fair, 9| a)

Sea Islands. —The sales of the week amount to 80
bales, at extremes ranging from 15 to 20 cts. There is
but little flue Cotton offering, the bulk on the market
being composed of the common qualities. Receipts of
the week 2 bales. Exports 298 bales.
Rice. —We have no change to notice in this article.
The demand continue? limited. The sales of the week
amount to upwards of 200 casks, at extremes ranging
from $3.25,ait3 62$ per hundred pounds.
Flour. —This article is very scarce, in fact the market
is almost entirely bare, consequently prices rule very
high. We quote at s9:s $3 25 per bbl.
Corn.— The stock of this article is light, and the de
mand fair. We have heard of no large transactions.
It is selling, in small lots, at sl.os@sl 10 per bushel.
Hay. —There have be n no cargo arrivals since our
last report. Northern is selling from store at sl37s,
and Eastern at $1.62$ per cwt.

f | IHIS delicious article combines so many meri-
JL torious qualities, that it has now become a
standard favorite with the citizens of New York,
Philadelphia and Baltimore. Dentists prescribe it
in their practice most successfully, and from every
source the most flattering laudations are awarded
it.
Inflamed and bleeding gums are immediately
bcnefitted by its use : its action upon them is mild,
soothing and effective. It cleanses the teeth so
thoroughly that they are mado to rival pearl in
whiteness, and diffuses through the mouth such a
delightful freshness, that the breath is rendered ex
quisitely sweet. It disinfects all those impurities

when theso are removed, tho tooth must always re

YELLOW-DOCK AND SARSAPARILLA,
TS now put up in the largest sized bottles, and is ac-
A be Sarsaparilla made, as is
certified by the wonderful cures it has performed, the
original copies of which are in the possession of the
proprietor, liemember, this is the only true and ori
ginal article.
Scrofula, Syphilis, Mercurial Complaints, Cancer. Gan
grene, Rheumatism, and a vast variety of other dis
eases, are speedily and perfectly cured' by the use of
this medicine.
READ THE FOLLOWING CERTIFCAI'E.
Tallapoosa County, Ala., Jan. 2,1853.
Dear Xu .-—I send you this to certify to you that
your Extract of Yellow Dock and Sarsaparilla has per
formed one of the most wonderful cures on me that
has ever been effected on man.
1 have been afflicted tor forty years with eruptions
on my legs and feet; in 1848 they got so bad that I had
to go on crutches, and in 1849 I had one leg amputated
above the knee. In about nine months after my other
leg broke out in large eat-'ug and running sores from
my knee to my foot, and discharged a great'deal of of
feusive matter. My groin also broke out in large biles,
which dischaiged much offensive matter, and at the
same time my left hand broke out iu large running
sores nearly to my elbow.
The misery that I have suffered for the last two years
l cannot describe to you. I was in such agony that I
never rested day or night.
In October last my son brought me one of your bot
tle wrappers; I read it, and found record of soma won
derful cures performed by your “ Extract of Yellow
Lock and sarsaparilla.” I sent and got two bottles of
it, anA commenced taking it. In two weeks, to my
great astonishment, my sores all became easy, and I
cou.d sleep all night, a thing I had not done for two
years. When I had taken six bottles, my sores had
enarly all healed. My sores got well as if by enchant
niont. 1 have now used, in all, eight bottles of your
Extract of \ellow Dock and Sarsaparilla,” and I now
consider myself well. *
I entreat all of the afflicted to try this Medicine, for
believe it will cure any known disease in the world
Lay aside all prejudice and just try it, and nroc aim its
great worth to suffering mankind, and entreat them to
take it, for it will curethem.
My case is well known in a large portion of South
Oaroln a, Georgia, and Alabama, and if any should doubt
the above cure, I invite them to call on me, and 1 will
show them the scars. 1 can be found in Tallapoosa
County, Alabama, one mile from Stoe’s Ferry
„„ „ , renajati hughes.
* i » Y ? low Dock and Sarsaparilla is peculiarly adap
ted for females of del, cate health, resulting frem Ir
regularities of menstrua':, discharges, and other diseases
peculiar to their box. The proprietor has in his possea
sion a great number of certificates of cures performed
of the above description. We assure the afflicted, that
a bottle or two of Dr. Guysott’s Extract of Yellow
Dock and Sarsaparilla will at o«ce regulate those diifi
culties and renew the natural energies.
