AUGUSTA, GA.
TUESDAY MORNING, AUG. 8.
$360 on one-twelfth of an Aero.
Tins Columbus Times ol the 4th inst says:
“ Mr. B. V. Iverson planted one-twelfth of an
acre io|Rescu<-}Grass seed last tail. This summer
he gathered 18 bushels of seed off of it, which
he has sold for $360 dollars in cash.’’
This is a good crop for one-twelfth of an acre,
a id is an evidence of the estimation with which
the grass is held.
Congress—Friday.
We have not room this morning for the pro
ceedings of Congress on Friday last in lull, so
must content ourselves with the following sumi
nary, which we take from the Union of Satur
day last :
Senate, —The report of the Committee on the
Judiciary in relation to the right of Hon. J. W.
Williams to retain his seat, was concurred in.
A large number ol private bills were passed,
as well as ail the remaining appropriation bills
but one. The time ol adjournment was post
poned until Monday next, in order that the nu
merous bills might be enrolled and signed before
the termination ol the session. The ocean-mail
steamer appropriation bill was not passed, the
committees ol conference being unable to agree
upon one of the amendments ; and without re
cording,the Senate adjourned until twelve
o’clock to-morrow. Thus the bill is defeated un
less the House of Representatives recede from
that amendment.
House of Representatives. —After our re
port went io press last night, the House adopted
the report ol the Committee of the Whole on
the Senate amendments to the Post Office ap
propriation bill. A bill passed repealing the
iirst proviso ol the fourth section of the bounty
land law of September 28, 1850. The amend
ment ol the Senate to the joint resolution of
thanks to Captain Duncan N. Ingraham was
passed, the rules being suspended by a vote of
109 ,tQ 36. The bill incorporating the George
town Pioneer Manufacturing Company was
passed. The House refused to suspend the
rules to admit the resolution conferring the title
of lieuteannt general by brevet tor eminent ser
vices. The House adopted the report of the
committee of conference on the civil and dip
lomatic bill, the Senate receding trom the amend
ment lor the Washington water-works, and
agreeing to an appropriation ol §15,000 for the
Little Falls bridge.
The House retused to take up the Senate reso
lution continuing the present session until Mon
day next. The House went into committee on
the river and harbor bill amendments, and after
wards rose and reported its action to the House,
and the report was adopted. The House then'
went into committee on the Senate amendments
to the navy appropriation hill, and afterwards
reported its action to the House, when the report
was adopted, as was subsequently the report of
the Committee of the Whole on the army ap
priation bill.
After recess of A<iir hours, at 9 o’clock, a m
the House again resumed us sitting. The re
port of the commi'tee ol eon Terrence on the dis
agreeing vote* of the two houses on the river
and habor bill was adopted. The House insisted
on its disagreement to the amendments of the
Senate to the mad steamer service bill. The re
ciprocits'-treaty bdl was read a third time and
psssed. On motion of Mr. Campbell, the Sen
ate joint resolution was amended so as to defer
the adjournment 01 Congress, until Monday
next, at 8 o'clock, a. m., provided that no mo
tion betaken after 4 o’clock to-day other than
the motion to adjourn. The amendment of the
Senate to the Post Office appropriation bill, in
creasing the pay of the cleiks in the Washington
City Post Office, was concurred in, with a limi
tation ol its provision to one year from the pas
sage of the act.
On motion of Mr. Cobb, the Secratary of the
lntenior was instructed to furnish the next ses
sion of Congress w ith statements as to the ex
tent and situation of the public lands, and the
length ot time they have been in the market.
Numerous Senate bills were referred to standing
commitees.and sundry bids of no general interest
were passed. On motion of Mr. JVlilison, it was
ordered that when the House adjourn to-morrow
it adjourn to meet at hail-past 7 o’clock on Mon
day next. A message was received from the
President vetoing the river and harbor hill ; but
there being i o quorum, it could not be lead ex
cept by unanimous consent; and this not being
obtained, the House adjaurned.
Later from Texas. — By the steamship Lou
isiana, Capt. Smith, from Indianola and Galves
ton, which left that port on the 31st uit., and
reached this city to-day, we have three days la
ter from Galves'on.
The Victoria Advocate says :
A line large bale of new cotton from th? plan
tation of Robert Wolford, on the Guadalupe ri
ver, near the mou'h of the Sandies, passed
through town on Thursday, on its way to mar
ket; the old crop seems to be inexhaustible.
Wagon loads of it are constantly thronging our
streets.
The Gonzales Inquirer, of the 22d ult., has the
following:
Many of our planters are complaining of the
scarcity of rain, and seem to think that of late
this element has been rather partial in its visi
tations. In the northern and western portions
of the country, it has rained abundantly, while
in other portions barely enough has iailen to lay
the dust. In this state of affairs, cotton ol course
must suffer some, still we do not think it can be
seriously injured. The crops generally are in a
flourishing condition, aud the prospect now is
that, :ain or no rain, every one will make as
much as he cail conveniently pick out. We
have not >“t heard of a single “ poor crop” in
the county, how ever much our friends may com
plain of “forms shedding” and the u giowth
checked” fiom excessive heat.
In those crops which are most forward, the
bolis are opening finely, and we learn that Gen.
Waul and Col. Means hav- already commenced
picking, the former on Monday last, and the lat
ter, (whose hands averaged from 100 to 140
pounds) on Thursday. Both ere striving to get
the first baie of the new ciop into market, and
we hope both may succeed. Gonzales should
have had the credit of getting the first bale into
market last year, but owing to some mismanage
ment it was unnecessary detained at Galves
ton, and our neighbor, DeWitt, slipped in and
•carried off the palm
The Advocate says that although the present
season has been unusually wet, and many per
- cons have predicted sickness, vet the health of
Victoria remains excellent. —-V O Pic., 3d tuff

without change, and for Egyptian, which are pressed
for sale, particularly iu the middle classes, lower and
irregular prices have been accepted. For Surat the de

supported. To-day Vsales are estimated at 8,000 bales,
2,000 on speculation and export.
There have been taken on speculation during the past

SAVE YOUR ICE.
THE use of Ice has,of la te years, become very
general, and is now considered indispensable
to the health and comfort of families, at tne same
time the increased demand for it, and the uncer
tainty of always procuring a supply, have added
materially to its costs. The consequence hasbeeß,
that various ways and means have been devised so
to reduce the expense of the article, as to bring it
within the roach of every family. Among these
none have been found to answer the purpose as
well as METALIC WATERCOOLERS, which are

A torious qualities, that it has now become a !
standard favorite with the citizens of New York, I
Philadelphia and Eaitimore. Dentists prescribe it j
in their practice most successfully, and from every j
source the most flattering laudations are awarded;
it.
Inflamed and bleeding gums are immediately i
benefited by its use; its action upon them is mild, !
soothing and effective. It cleanses the teeth so j.
thoroughly that they are made to rival pearl in
whit, ness, and diffuses through the mouth such a
delightful freshness, that the breath is rendered ex
quisitely sweet. It disinfects all those impurities
which tend to produce decay, and, as a consequence,
when these are removed, the teeth must always re
main sound.

Dear Sir: —l send you this to certify to vou that

has ever been effected on man.
I have been afflicted for forty years with emotions
on my legs and feet; in 184 S they’got so bad that I had
K crutches and in 1849 I Ld one leg amputated
fb >ve the knee. In about nine months after my other
leg broke out id large eating and running sores from
my knee to my foot, and discharged a great deal of of
fensive matter. My groin also broke out in large biles,
which dischaiged much offensive matter, anif at tho
same time my left hand broke out in large running
sores nearly to my elbow b ‘"““‘“s
The misery that I have suffered for the last two years
I cannot describe to you. I was iu such agony that I
never rested day or night. *
In October last my son brought me one of your bot
tle wrappers; I read it, and found record of some won
derful cures performed by your “ Extract of Yellow

it, and commenced taking it. In two weeks to mv

For the Fever and Ague arid Chagres Fever.
The PRoi’RlEiOli of this Medicine will stataWß
without hesitation or fear of
that the Stampedo Mixture has cured more per-T"
sons, whore it has been introduced, than any other
medicine in use for tho above diseases. This med- f

sition, all of tho ingredients are of a perfectly 1
healthy character and highly stimulating and in- f <4
vigorating in their tendency. Persons while using y j
this medicine will not be affected by exposure to
water or a damp atmosphero no more than when in ,
their usual health. Planters in sections of the *
country where the Ague prevails, will do well to #
adopt this medicine, as the patient is not obliged \
to lay by while under treatment, and they may be
assured of a speedy cure. The Proprietor could y"
