pVERY BODY KNOWS FANNY FERN J
JUj every body has iaughed and cried over her
spanning, dashing, tru hfjl, genial writings; every
body will wish to read this, her first novel, and eve
ry one who dvos read it will pronounce it her great
est work Says an able critic who has read tao
proof sheet®, ‘ Ruth II all ia a work which not only
exceeds any thing which Fanny Fern has before
written, but which in many respects surpasses uny
other worK. whatever. For intense and sustained
interest of narrative, for originality of conception
and treatment, for scorching sarcasm and wi her
ing rebuke pretensions and hipoorisy, for eieva j
tion of moral tone and winsomeness of religious ;
inculcations, for vigor, freshness, simplicity, di
rectness and fascination of style, we have never ’
seen its equal. * * * The story takes
possession of our heart at oncewe follow •Ruth 1
th ough her trials with as much inter st as though
she were our own sister; she breathes not a sigh,
she suffers not a .sorrow, which the reader does not
feel as acutolj as though the first came from his
own heart, and the second were one of his own sad
experiences Ihe characters are such as we are
constantly meeting in everyday life; and how
boldly and skilfully they are drawn, how power
fully the story is told, Low touching is i s pathos,
how sparkling its wit, how irresistable its humor,
howjjevore its satire, and how true it* moral, no
