UY I V\IKS GARDNER. A UGGtjTA, (iA. THURSDAY MORNINO. DECEMBER 21. Destruction by Fike of the English Ship Polar Star. — A It-ilei from St. Helena, publish ed in the New Voih Journal ol Commerce, gives an account *>i the loss of this vessel by tire, in the South Atlantic Ocean. The Polar Star was a fine clipper ship at some 600 tons, hound to New Zealand with troops and emigrants, in all 96 souls, among whom were many women and children. Smoke was observed ascending the hatchways on the Ist of October; the tire could not be leached, and tor three days am! two nights, those on board suf fered the agonies of the most awful suspense. In addition to having the ship burning under them, they found that they had neither water nor pro visions on deck, one thousand miles away from land, and their boats not capable of containing nioie than two thirds of their number if obliged to have recourse to them. At length, the long looked tor succor bore insight, in the appearance of the Anamooka, from Callao to Cadiz, which tcok off ali on board, and carried them to St. Helena. In leaving, the hatches, which had been battened down, were removed; flames burst up, the masts we le-cairied overboaid, and she was speedily burned to the watei’s edge. The writer says he cannot torbear mentioning the kind and noble generosity of Capt. T. H.-Lin nell, ot the American clipj>er ship Eagle Wing of Boston, lying at St. Helena, and who on as certaining the circumstances of the destitute, at once offered a irt-e passage to London to a family consisting of seven persons, and also took three of the seamen. Rtv. N. M. Crawford.— We learn from mie of the Trustees of fiercer University, that this gentleman has been unanimously elected Presi dent of that Institution, and that he has accepted the appt inttr.ent. On the 30th uit.,a meeting was held in Lon don in commemoration of the Polish Revolution of 1830, and at which Kossuth delivered an elo quent address. The course ot the allied govern ments, in conducting he war, is cr iticised wi*h out mercy, while the gallantry of their aimies is dwelt upon with reroute neous admiration and applause. According to Kossuth, the only means of securing the West ol Europe against the en croachments of Russia, is the reconstruction ot Poland, folio;* ed by the Restoration of the oth er lately subjugated and supp rested nationalities of the Continent. The Fortune of a Day. —Six Thousand Dol lars Lost in a Gambling Room. —A bout a month since we dated that a poor mechanic residing on Seventh street in this city, named William L. Walker, had received intelligence of the death of an uncle ia the city of Baltimore, by which he came into possession of nine thousand dollars, all in cash. Mr. Walker immediately upon the re ceipt of this information, gave up his situation m Henderson's carpenter shop, and started tor the monumental city to receive his fortune. Up on his arrival in Baltimore, he learned that the money to which he bad fall-n heir was in such a condition that it could not be obtained for six months. Young Walker, anxious to get the money “on sight, ’’ offered to take $8,500 for the whole amount, and finally did sell his claim tor SB,OOO. Overjoyed at the success which had at tended him, he hastened back to his home. Five hundred dollars was expended the next day after his return in purchasing new 7 furniture, &c., tor his house. The old furniture was sent to Wood- and disposed of at auction, the whole be ing sold for $47, such was its inferior character. Walker, with his little latnily, rented a house on Longworth street at S3OO a year, and expended quite a sum of money in having it re- painted and whitewashed. Walker feeling himself indepen dent enough to play the gentleman, commenced frequenting the saloons and restaurants on Third street in the day time and the theatre at night. He made acquaintances speedily, and very liber ally treated them to oysters and other refresh ments, and in return his new Iriends invite.d him to play cards and billiards at their expense. The netv sphere in which he was enjoying hirnself so eclipsed his better judgment that ha was soon persuaded to visit the gambling rooms. At first he won at nearly every game, and accumulated nearly S3OO. Night after night he continued visiting these sinks ol iniquity, one of which is located on Third street, until he had lost over six thousand dollars of the lortune he nad receiv ed but a few weeks since. Walker says that when he had lost four thousand dollars of the money he would have stopped, had he not ex jiected to get the sum back again by continuing the game. He has now, however, stopped, and has sought redress in one of our courts of justice. Besides the tine furniture, clothing, &c., he pur chased, he has only $1,700 of the SB,OOO left, but promises hereafter to remain at home, and not squander what is left, but resume his daily labor and attend closely to the interests and welfare of his family.— Cincinnati Gazette.
