Thr MtBKRT Hoc ■ The destruction of the old rnirket house and the ineligibility of its situation has determined the council to purchase another situation for this much needed city appendage. In pursuance of thia purpose, Council on Friday evening author! <> aed the purchase of the lot on the corner of Pryor sod Hunter streets, for the erection of . a market building. This lot is 84 by 185 feet, ' and is offered to the city at Slop per foot, ■ thus costing the city $8,400 for a bare lot.— ' But it is not the price of the lot tbat we pro- I pose to speak. As tor us we knew the price is as moderate as could be expected The question we propose to discuss is whether the whole of tbat expense could not have been saved anil a much better place secured at the same time for a market bouse. In the first place the market bouse shoul d be on some one of the principal thoroughfares. The lot the city proposes to buy is in a very out of the way place. Again, the best position for a market house is in the centre of a street.— I is so in Augusta, and in a great many other cities, and the citizens not only find it to be a convenience, but it actually adds to the ap pearance of the city. A neat market bouse io the centre of a wide street is no mean ap pendage. Now, Marietta street, from Whitehall some distance up is at least one hundred feet wide, and it is in the centre of that street, either be tween Whitehall and Broad, or immediately above Broad, that we would have proposed the erection of the proposed building. A . comely edifice, thirty feet wide, and five-hun dred feet long, if the city fathers see fit to | erect so large a one, could bj here accotn I modeled and still leave a passage on either side of feet. This land belongs to the city, and by using it for this purpose the $8 ,400 dollars could be saved to pay damages . on Broad street, or for other city purposes.— The lot on Pryor street is not large enough for a city market, and the contingency on which the purchase of adjacent lots rests is an extremely doubtful one. Then wbyjshould the city incur the expense of purchasing a lot and erecting on it a building that can only nerve the city a few years ? A building erect ed as we propose would be sufficient to meet the demands of the city forever, A bouse of ‘ moderate size could be built at present, andso Ada; ted that additions could be made with ***** We have not been addicted to' carping at the legislation of our present city council. In tbeir actions we have seen much to applaud and little to condemn. And we should not oppose them now were it not that we wish to see the very best that may be done, done for the future of the city. “#• have pitched our tent on this camp ground,” and we wish our “situation” to be as comfortable as possible, •nd at the same time we are anxious to see the wishes of the people consulted on all mattars of importance, and we are confident tbat the people will bear us out in our opin ions in tms matter. Thus before council takes any definite action in this matter we would counsel them to be certain tbit wh it they do is what will be best for Atlanta ten years hence. We regard the present council as the ‘ most important one tbat has ever legislated for the people of ( the city. What'tbey do im volves the beauty and convenience and the fqture wealth of tbe ci’y. Thus let them take the advice ofCrocket “ Be sure you are right and then go ahead.” Tnr Sabbath—la tbe economy of Divine Providence no institution is more adapted to tbe health, social prosperity and moral advance ment ol man than tbs boly Sabbath. Man, when furnished with the physical adaptation tor toil, was limited in his powers of endurance. He requires rest; not tbat rest which comes for sleep solely, but a wakeful rest for all tbe faculties of soul, body and mind. A complete relaxa * tion from ail labor, a surcease from that train of thought which occupies his mind during tbe w»k, sod a contemplation of those things which concern tbe immortality of his soul, are alike necessary to tbe health of tbe body and expansion of tbe better faculties of the nature of man. Mau was not constituted a drudge by the great Creator of tbe Universe. No more labor was allotted to him than was deemed necessary for bis bodily, existence; and be who, by an inordinate desire for.wealth, or an over-aspira lion tor aaaase, traMgreeses these laws, violate! alike tbe laws of tbe gospel and tbe statutes of nature—tbe latter of wbleb are never violated but tbat tbe penalty is in some sort visited upon tbe culprit in Ibis life, while violations of tbe former are punishable in tbe great mystic fu ture. Obligations to observe the Sabbath are una voidable, if man would stand unaccused before bis Maker. Tbe statute tbat binds man to Its • observance has its importance attested by it° poeitir.n in tbe Decalogue, and no tnan can re tuse its observance and stand excused at the great tribunal of bis conscience. But apart from tbe religious and moral obli gations tbat are resting upon man in regard to tbis day, there are physical considerations which render it not only a duty, but a pleas ure, to observe it. No one, but he wbo is wedded to some idol, fails to appreciate the pleasure of eavng a day in which he cau fl og aside the impleinen s of toil, retire from the dust and B>bel-moutbed confusion of business, and rest; have no business cares harrasaing the rated t nd enervating tbe body to be free frt m all tbat cen Wtary the frame, and live tor one day in seven as becomes a being wbo is morally accounta ble to blrnsell for tbe preservation of bis physi cal constitution. Sir Matthew Hale remarked, that of the many hundred criminals convicted before him while Lord Coief Justioa of the King’s Bench, be found none that were not williug to confess that tbeir downward course of ct’nw was not com menced by violate ns of tbe Sibbath. Tbs confirms us iu tbe belief tbat all national and state o< nititu'ions should make some acknowl edgment of tbe day, and common laws should impose a penalty tor violations of it. Large Increase Ist Business.—The Messrs. ! John T. Meador <t Bros, have tbeir store room so full of bran new dry goods tbat one can scarcely turn round in it. Their goods are di rect trout New Yorn city, and comprise every thing in tbeir line that is needed. Tbe-n gen tieman are doing a general j ibblng and com mission business, and are increasing their stock by tbe arrival ot every train. Country mere chants, with but a small capital, can doubtless make it to tbeir interest to lay In a stock at t! is jobbing bouse, as they sell goods as cheap as can be bought in Nashvil e or other western markets, with tbe addition of freight. We are personally acquainted with tbe gentlemen com posing tbis flrm, and can testily integ rity and business qualifications. Country peo ple visiting Atlanta cannot do better than to give them a call, if for nothing else only to hear tbe prices, wbiob are extremely low. For further particulars, see advertisement in to-day’. Era. The Old Post Offics Corner is rapidly becoming the centre of attraction for citizens, and in fact, every one visiting the city. In tbe room fronting on Whitehall Messrs. Wm. Rich ACo , have on hand, and are daily re moving a very large and varied assortment of Dry Goods, Clothing, Hats, Caps. 800 l t Shoes, and everything else generally kept iu a first class store. Tbeir store is crowded from morning till eight with people of all climes and colors, eager to invest tbeir green ba ks, and seldom is it the case tbat one leaves tbeir store without making a purchase. The enterprising members of tbe firm, with i tbeir corps of polite and accomodating e’e ks i are kept stirring all day to accomodate tbeir | easterners. in another column will be found ' as advertisement of tbis establishment to which we invite particular attention. City Council—Council met as usual on Friday evening. Present, His Honor James M. Calhoun, Mayor, and Councilmen Adair, Mead, Salmons, Simmons, Williford and Wood. Minutes read and adopted. Report of tbe Finance commi'tee adopted. A motion authorized the purchase of tbe lot on the corner of Pryor and Hunter b reels 84 by 185 feet, for a market lot. Councilman Adair, introduced tbe follow ing which was passed. Resolved, That a force of fifty additional hands be put to work upon tbe streets under tbe supervision of a competent overseer of streets. Council adjourned. Brawl.-A difficulty arose between a negro and a white lad on yesterday, which resulted iu tbe negro knocking tbe boy down. Negro-like, however, when down, he bounced him with tbe intention of following up bis advantage ; but be met with a species of tactics he bad not counted on, for tbe lad soon made the negro tbe bottom dog tn the fight, and pumtneled him finely The police arrested tbe n- gro, and be is now in custody. Fight.—A couple of soldiers became involved in a tnisuuderstaudinc on Friday evening, and came to blows. One of them dashed tbe other to tbe ground, and gave him an impolite stamp or two in tbe face. The Provost guard, how ever, came up and arrested tbe belligerents. Stij.l Coming.—Mr. Levy, of the Aim of Levy <fc Co., of New York and Nashville, is now iu this city. His object is to secure a building for the purpose of opening a large business bouse. We hope be will succeed in his enterprise. We need such men here to aid in rebuilding tbe trade of the city. A New Rkhtaukant has just been opened under the old Post Office, frothing tbe Railroad, by Isaiah Davih. It is a first class affair, and everything good in the eating line is served up there. Inquire tor tbe Rail Road Restaurant, under Jno. T. Meador & Bro’s. Arrested.—The Deputy Marshal, in arresting a negro on Friday afternoon, was interfered with, by four others wbo forbid the arrest. Not baffled by this interposition, tbe Marshal made tbe arrest, and included in it tbe four officious sons of Ham, and lodged them all safely at the City Hall. We hope they will make a commodious hotel of it, as regards the comfort of it tbat will be tbe look out of tbe inmates.
