Business. —In passing the door of the office
of Adams Express Company, we are astonish
ed to see the amount of business that is being
done through this channel. Enormous piles
of boxes, bundles, barrels and every other
imaginable shape in which goods could be
transmitted, completely block up the office.
A large portion of these goods is for mer
chants in this city, while the remainder goes
further South.
We are glad to see this accumulation of
business on the hands of this company. It
evidences a rapid increase of business in thia
city and in our neighboring cities. It shows
that the trade of the South is rapidly revi
ving and shaking off the chains that four
years of war have bound around it. We
confilently expect to see at an early day a
full restoration of commerce, and the who e
of the people engaged in some lucrative bus
iness. Work tow is the watchword. It is
the tailismaoie influence which is to restore
not only our city, but the whole country.—
Let every man put bis hand to the task. If
he is only qualified to dig let him do that
with seal It he is a merchant let him ply
that calling. If he is a mechanic, the city
needs every energy of his brawny limbs. Lt
the whole of the people go to work.
“ Labor with w hat z?al we will,
Something still remains undone,
Something one unpletrd still
Waits the rising of Uie sub.”
Bchglabt.—We are informed that the store
of Messrs. Scott Parsons & Freeman was en
tered. by means of false keys, on Tuesday,
and goods to the amount of S6OO. were car
ried off. This was one of the boldest thefts
on record, as the burglars went io at the
front door, and the clerks were .sleeping in
the adjoining room.
The articles stolen consisted mainly ot
Hoop Skirts, Merino and Jewelry.
Evidently, woman was at the bottom of it.
A right sharp lookout might detect some
of the missing article* without much trouble,
while to find some of them would require a
closer inspection.
This is the first burglary we have yet had
to record in this city. We hope such things
will not be frequent. The great wonder,
however, is that they are not more frequent,
as we are sensible of very great defects in
our police system. The city has been wholly
unable thus far to perfect a good police sys
tem. but the labors of the Ccuncil is tending
in this direction and we may reasonably hope
•oontohrvea vigorous and effective City
Police.
No Wonder. —While the imprints of the iron
he-l ot war is seen everywhere in onr laud ; i
while Atlanta is a ruined monument ot what
she once was, and Columbia, a disrobed queen
is lying disconsolate among the historic seen, g
ot the old Palmetto State; while the bead of
Charleston is brought down te the duet, her
fuimer glory all departed, the sackcloth of ruin
wrapped about her form, and the ashes of deso '
lation at her feet; while homes in which dear <
ones have lived and died, homes made sacred *
by a thousand incidents ibat
“Glide above our memories
Like shadows over streams,”
are heap* of unsightly ruins; while the genial
Mil, where flowers nodded their gentle plumes
in the breeze, and rich harvest waved with their
load of food for man atffi beast, is become as a
desert and a waste, can it, we ata, can it be
wondered at that so many men weai such
shockingly bad clothes ’
Bill Moon’s Bab Room, judging from the
crowd which we daily see trending their way
up stairs, over the store of Messrs. Lovejoy
4 Do., is a very attractive place. Os course
we never indulge, and can’t speak from expe
rience, but from what other people say Bill
keeps an Excellent house. He has just re
ceived a new lot of liquors and wines, which
(they say) are fine—unsurpassed by' any in
the market. Now if people will drink our
advice to them is to drink good pure liquors
instead of “ butt-head" and “

BELLV.ua Hovnutow-This new Hotel will
shortly be opened ftr the accommodation of
of guests. It is a largo and commodious
house, aud under the supervis on of Messrs.
Price & Stokes, it is bound to be a popular
house. They intend to spare neither pains
nor expense to make it one of the best hotels
in the South, and their reputation for energy
and business is a sufficient guarantee of their
success.
Vkky Choice.—“ The Choice House, - ’ Rome
Ga., is again open for the accommodation of
the public. In the olden time, this house
was a choice one, and acting upon its past
reputation, we can safely afford to say it is
now one of the beet Hotels in the country.—
We hope onr friends who have business in
Rome, will give Mr. Rawlings a call.
Yesterday was not so salubrious as the
day p evious. There was not quite so much
breeze, and a great deal more sun. We
have, except on a very few occasions, been
an advocate of the “ Sunny South but if it
keeps on in this way awhile longer, we will
be compelled to condemn the thing us entire
ly too “ sunny.”
New Era Job Office.—We have just com
pleted the fitting up of a good job office, and
are prepared to do all kinds of job work in
the best manner. Our office is under the
' charge of Mr. T. S. Reynolds, well known in
■ this city as a fine job printer, and an attentive
! and punctual business man. Give us a trial.
' New Store.—A great want of the city has
been supplied by Mr. Henry Seltzer, who has
recently fitted up a house furnishing store, and
he h»s on hand just such articles as a are great
ly need. Those who desire anything in this
line, would do well to consult our advertising
columns, and then go and fill their bill at Mr.
Seltzer’s.
Linguists.—Among the numerous dialects—
Anglo-Saxon, Amerido-Hibernian. African and
Ligerbeer—and lingual abortions everywhere
heard on our streets, there seems to be but one
language in which most rniii and all small boys
are adepts, and tbit is profane language.

“That I cannot inform you,” replied the’
communicative gentleman,' “ but he’s dead.”
This is considered the best guarded answer
on record.
