Marshal’s Office, 1
Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 18, 1885. J
To the Honorable Mayor and Council of the
City of Atlanta.
Gentlemen : I beg leave to tender, hereby
tbe resignation of my office as Chief Marshal
of the City of Atlanta, which I hope may
meet witb acceptance at the bands of your
Honorable body.
I cannot tender my resignation, however,
without first extending to you my thanks for
the kind and cardial support witb which
ycu have always encouraged me in the dis
charge of my official duties. Our intercourse
has ever been of tbe most harmonious nature ;
and I cannot but feel gratified that it has not
been otherwise.
The office Is one which was never sought
by me ; but the Council which preceded you
saw fit to elect me, and after much solicita
tion on their p-rt, I was induced so accept it!
But in tbe discharge of my duty I have court
ed the favor of none, and in no instance have
I sacrificed tbe welfare of tbe city to gain a ■
selfish end. My official conduct bag probably ;
made me some enemies ; but I can reasona
bly hope that it has made me friends among
tbe best of our citizens. And though I hope
you may be able to supply my place with a
more efficient officer, you will never get one
who has tbe good of tbe ci y more at heart.
I am induced by tbe state of my health and
tbe condition ot my business affairs to offer
this, my resignation, which I hope, will meet
witb acceptance at tbe bands of your Honor
able body.
Awaiting your pleasure in the matter, I
have tbe honor to subscribe myself,
Most obediently,
Your bumble servant,
O. H. Jones,
City Marshal.
