DAILY NEW ERA.
A. R. WATSON LOCAL EDITOR.
Fink Papke.—We cannot resist the temp
tation to call attention to the fine nrt'cle of
paper on which the Era makes us appearance
to-day. It is white and nice as can be had at
anj mill in the country—good enough for
any use. It was manufactured at the Fulton
Paper Mills in this City.
Mr. G J. Foreacrc has shown a most com
mendable enterprise in perfecting the work
ing of this manufactory. It is now in steady
operation, and is competent to furnish any
amount of paper that may be required. We
commend this mill to all our exchanges and
the paper-Ueing public generally.
Hon. B. H. Hitt,. —This great Georgian

doing good work toward reorganisation by
the administration of wholesome counsels to
the people with whom becomes in contact.
The past conduct of Mr. Hill entitles him to
the very highest respect and confidence of the
people.

upon the lap of autumn. Yesterday was sulky
as if the summer were wroth at being dts
p'aced. We shall soon begin to expect the
hollow sounds of autumn bellowing down
from the snow-capped hills of the North.
A Phbckdisst.—A negro was arrested and
tried in LaGrangy a few days ago for some

WHAT THEY DO AT NEWPORT,
A Newport letter to the Boston Post avers
that the following is the order of performan
ces at that celebrated watering place thiesea-
; son :
FOR LADIES.
Rise late.
Bi eakfast where you sit about a great deal,
scan everybody that enters or ex ts, eat what
you can get, and, f llowing one of Franklin’s
golden rules, retire from the table with an
appetite.
Promenade to the march in “ Faust,” vigs
orously played by the band.
Sit in the corridor and abuse the company.
Drive to the beach and bathe, or drive to
the beach and not bathe, and wonder how
other women can.
Return home and wait patiently for the
hair-dresser.
Hair-dresser.
Grand toilet.
Dinner.
Ladies in black silk go to the table early to
see and not to be seen. Ladies cn grande ten
tie wait until the second course in order to be
seen and not see. Very little eating and a
great deal of remarking what other women
have on.
Promenade to the March in “Faust.” If
you are young and prstty, and have admirers,
you begin your flirtations for the day. If you
are not young and pre ty, but are a coquette,
you flirt all the same.
If you do the heavy dignity, you sit down
in the corridor, learn everybody by heart, and
abuse the same company.
Driving on the av nue, when nobody looks
at the sunset and everybody continues to
look at everybody else.
Tea Loss eating than at d’nner, and more
gossip. Retire to emerge in evening costume.
Promenade to 'he march in “Faust.” Flir
tations at tbeir height, A general desire to
look at the moon, if there is any : at the stars;
if there is no moon If you don’t indulge in
flirtations, you watch others, and thereby ac
quire a fund of information for the next day’s
gossip. To bed at midnight.
FOR GENTLEMEN.
Rise late and buy a New York paper.—
Breakfast: read a very little of the newspa
per and look a great deal at the pretty girl
opposise.
Get an introduction to pretty girl and prom
enade.
Smoko a cigar on piazza, and talk about
the pretty girl and the Saratoga races.
Go down to the beach and watch the bath
ers, ridicule the women and pronounce them
frights.
Cigars or billiards, or both, or an equiva
lent. Another cigai and gossip.
Toilet.
Dinner.
Lounge and watch the ladies. Go in rather
late. Gaze unabashed at all the toilets that
were invented for the purpose of attraction.
Fee the waiter and take what you don’t
want.
Promenade with as many pretty girls as is
possible. Talk an infinite deal of nonsense.
Invito the prettiest and silliest to drive.—
Drive and display our horses, or be driven
and talk about, men that have turn-outs ex
traordinary.
Tea with pretty girl. More nonsense.
Cigars on piazza. More talk about horses
in general and pretty women in particular.
Promenade with pretty girls. Flirtations.
Some gentlemen—those who approve of
early hours—are up betimes to visit the
“grand moral” men agerie before referred to.
It is also said that the Ocean House proprie
tors would be bankrupt were it not for the
immense receipts taken at what is called “the
bar.”
Interesting Episode.—An affair occurred
this morning in the barber shop connected
with Willard’s Hotel, that, for the time, cans*
ed more or less excitement, and relative there-,
to there were several conflicting stories afloat,
and as far as we could learn from a gentle
man who said he witnessed the affair, it ap
pears that General Rosseau, Member of Con
gress elect from Kentucky, and who served
with considerable credit as a General in the
Federal army through the war, was getting
shaved by the foreman of the shop, who has
heretofore borne the character of a genteel
and quiet colored man, when by some acci
dent he cm the General’s lip. The General
told him to be more careful, when the barber
in a peculiar tone, informed the General he
did not do it intentionally, when the General
again informed him he would hit him if he
spoke to him insolently. The barber then
jerked the towel from the General’s neck, and
gave him warning if ho hit him he would cut
the General’s throat from ear to ear. The
General at this point rushed to bis room for
bis pistols, and when he returned his friends
interposed, as the baroer also had obtained a
pistol and threatened to blow the General’s
brains out if he entered the shop. This is as
near the truth of the matter as we could get.
We endeavored to see the colored man and
get his version of the affair, but he was non
esl for for the time being Washington Union.
WAREHOUSE STAMP DUTIES
We learn that some of the business men of
the country appear to be slow in comprehend
ing the necessity of using the internal reven
ue stamps in the transaction of their general
business affairs. Scarcely a document can be
bailed legally, without a stamp is attached.—
Particularly would we invite the attention of
warehousemen to the following stamp regu
lations governing theirevery day transactions :
Warehouse Entry, at custom-hous-
es, not exceeding SIOO ill value,
stump duty 25 cents.
Do., do., exceeding SIOO and not ex-
ceeding SSOO 50 cents.
Do., do., exceeding SSOO in value sl.
Warehouse receipts for property,
goods, wares, or merchandise, not
otherwise provided for, in any pub
lic or private warehouse, when the
property or goods so deposited or
suited shall not exceed in value
SSOO 10 cents.
Do., exceeding in value SSOO and not
exceeding SI,OOO 20 cents.
Do., exeteding SI,OOO, for every ad-
ditional SI,OOO 10 cents.
Do., others 25 cents.
Withdrawal entry, at customshouse
stamp duty CO cents.
A Sly Dig at Beecher.—New York cor
respondent of theOhicargo Journal gives the
illustrious Henry Ward the following quiet
rap :
“We have a minister in this city who makes
$20,000 a year preaching the gospel. He takes
it lor granted that everybody can have what
ho can afford, and when he gets a new thing
he puts it into the newspaper, to let all the
world know it, as a hen cackles to announce
that she has laid an egg Ho furnished his
bouse with costly pictures; immediately the
whole world was called upon to buy paintings,
they were so humanizing, and elevating and
intellectual. Os course all we poor fellows,
who live in attics and chambers, work hard
to get bread, and fight hourly to k>-ep the
wolf away from the door, can spend $5,000 or
SIO,OOO for pictures just as well as not, and
they would be so becoming ! Then he bought
a farm to live on in the sumnief, it was so
convenient. Then he goes off into raptures
on a cow that he bought—describes the luci
ous cream, and how the very pigs reveled in
skim milk. He advises everybody to have a
cow, so that they might have cream.”
