DAILY NEW ERA.
A. R. WATSON LOCAL EDITOR.
Ladies Dhkssks.—ln looking over :he fash
ion plates io Godey for the Inst ten years, one
is astonished to see what gieat and frequent
revolutions have taken place in the parapher
nalia of a lady's wardrobe; but in no article
save perhaps the head-gear has the
cli.-iuges been more radical than in the dress
proper.
in the style of goods used for the purpo-e,
the change has been rung upon a hundred
d.tferent keys. Al one time, the goods were
plain, and required a deal of “trimming”—at
another time it w>-s plain, with no “trim
ming.” Again, we find the goods of the gay
est character, giving the lady, when viewed
at a dista ice—as we always view such things
he appearance of being a huge inverted bo
qnet. Ribbon-, fringes, laces, gimps, braids,
bobbin, and all such things, at one time is
eewed, basted, pinned or tied on in great pro
lusion ; again, the dress evinced a “total abv
etinence” from all such flummery.
But in nothing has the change been more
worthy of note than in the “cut of the jib.”
We find the dress sometimes reaching not
nearer than three inches from the ground,
showing the dainty rounded ancle, While
* Her fe-t ben ath her petticoat
Like little unco peeped in ado >*,”
at other times were suffered to “drag t.ieir slow
lei gth along” in dus and mud and fltih of all
k ads, rcgaidiess ot dumng s which inevitably
brought about a suit—of new clothes—after a
few wearings. At the other end the dress has
been exceedingly Ciquetisb. Now coming high
up the neck and listened closely about the
throat, then coming so low that if the wearer
wi re placed beside the Greek Slave it were
doubtful which would be entitled to the blush.
Then, again, the sleeves have been at one
time tight enough to show every muscle of a
well-rounded atm, or the acute angle of a
eh-irp elbow, at another they were large, loose
uud floated in the breeze like too white mis's,
or white wings; and so on through diversities
too numerous to notice the tld Beldam Fash
ion, has brought her c< quetttsh wonders, which
have been bn tight and applauded, praised and
cursed until they have become popular fur
Very spite.
At present the styles of dress are as varied
as the hues of an autumnal forest, and most of
them are as beautiful. The most noticable one
is that which is looped up around the bottom
o the skirt, in several or more places, for the
t urpose we presume of keeping't out of the
mud. We would like te di scribe the arrange
ment, but we haven’t a simile at band and
c in’t make one for the occasion so we give it
ipas a bad jb. We suppose the arrange
ment is abundant in utility, but as regards its
beauty we haven’t been able to discover it.
The Weather.—For the past few days has
been as coquettish as April. Sometimes we
have had sun, sometimes shower and some
times both together. The rains that have fall
en bare laid the dust quietly to rest, and been
a great relief to all turn p patches. We think
such weather will continue for some days un
less we have a change and in that case it is
likely to be better or worse. We don’t pro
fess to be weather-wise, but we stake our rep
utation on the above prediction. The nights
would now be moonsbiny if the clouds would
jwrmit such a thing, and if they were not so
hot and sultry one could sleep coolly. We
would like for the weather to get cold enough
to freeze the snout of one pestiferous mos
quito.
■ To Cotton Owners.—We refer cotton own
ers, especially those in South-Western Geor
gia, to the card of Messrs E. M. Bruce, Morgan
A Co., at Apalachicola, Fla. This branch of
the business of this firm has been established
for the purpose of giving the people in those
sections a market for cotton, much of which
remains in the country unsold for want of an
outlet for it.
The business, and its various branches, of
which Mr Bruce it the bead, is eveiy way re
sponsible and reliable. We commend them
to those who have cotton for sale.
New Fibm—New Goops—New Attraction.
From our advertising columns it will be
seen shat Dr. R. J Massey has now associated
with him in busines-o Dr. Henry S. Orme.—
They may be found at the store of Abbott &
Bro’s, on Whitehall street, where they have
< ne of the most useful as well as ornamental
docks of goods in town. They have a splen
did lot of oils, perfumery, pomades and toil-
< t articles of all kinds including a fine variety
of the bes' soaps that are made. We invite
attention to thiir card and place of business.
Retail License —The city authorities, in
conjunction, or rath<r with the approval of
th. Mi itary, have now control of tbe liquor
trade in this city. The Council has conclud
ed to grant license, and those who have drink
tig saloons end bar rooms in tbe city can now
apply for snd procure license. A continuance
<>i the traffic without the necessary papers will
be likely to txpose them to cost which will
more than counterbalance the cost of license.
—■
Public Attention—Will be unanimously
and overwhelmingly riveted upon tbe adver
tisement of W. A. Ramsey & Co, found in
another column. These gentlemen are in re
ceipt of more good things than heart could
wish or ever enteted into the mind of man to
conceive, ixcept it bu oi.e like Ramsey who
knows what every body wants and tries to
keep it.
The Council —Owing to negligence on our
part, we failed to attend tho meeting as Coun
cil on Friday evening, and consequently we
fail to give our readers the customary repott
of the proceedings this morning. We will
try and avoid sucn dereliction in future.
To Rent.—Mr. W F Harris bag a business
office to rent, also a large basement to dis
pose of in the same way.
Jno. Vcudcby & Bros, have pure white
lead, cane syrup, cheese and prime bread
corn and lots of other goods things for sale at
their stand on Whitehall street.
The Bihpok. —Council on Friday evening
appointed a committee to let tbe contract for
building tbe Broad street bridge over the rail
road. As this is a great convenience to the
people we hope the work will be put in pro
g os. st once. Wc want a good, gubstan'ial,
wide bridge at that point.
Caught.—Two of the horse thieves, who
have been committing depredations around
the city for some time, one hlack and the
other white, were, on yesterday, arrested by
Marshall Davis. Wo hope this arrest will
lead to the capture of the whole band of
thieves who have been infesting tbe city.
City Marshal.—Capt. Bill Fuller was
elected Marshal of the city by Council on
Friday evening. He will doubtless make a
vigilant and effective officer.
Who has Lost Cows?—Persons who bate
lost cows recently in this city, may find some
clew to their whereabouts by calling on Mar
shall Davis.
A New Mail Invention. Mr. A. A Bradley,
mail agent on the lowa division of the Chica
go atid Northwestern Railroad, has invented a
pla i whereby mailbags are taken from the rail
road station while trains are running at full
speed. The experiment his just been tried on
tbe Illinois C- ntrul Radroad, with tbe permis
sion and at the cost of tbe company. It proved
a complete su"C"SL — Tt.e engine, with the car
io which was at.ached tbe apparatus, was run
at various rates of speed, and in every instance
the exchange was completely and satisfactorily
made.
The Albany New York, papers say that
a severe drought extends over a 1: rge section
ol country. The streams on the line of the
Albany tnd Boston Ra Iroad are nearly dried
up ; while tbe crops aie stiff-ring and vege
tation has a pa nfully parched look. Caps
Cod is gasping tor water, while no rain t>
sneak of has fallen in Nantucket for two months.
The later crops will, it is feared, be seriously
ass cted.
Pennsylvania Democratic Convention.—
The Pennsylvania Democratic State Convei
tion met at Harrisburg on th- 24tb, and notr
inated Col. W. H. H. Davis ns Auditor-Gem*
era!, and John P. Linton as the Surveyor-Gen
eral. Tbe Convention passed a series of reso
lutions concurring with President Johnson ia
tus constiuction of the status of States recent
ly in rebel ion, denouncing Negro Suffrage as
a ‘high crime” against the Constitution and an
attempt to degrade the white race to a level
with the black.
We learn from the Augusta papers that ar
rangements have been made for a passenger
train to leave the Augusta and Savannah
railroad depot every night at nine o’clock,
which will connect at Waynesß ro’ with a line
of wagotis for Savannah, via station 4J, C. R.
R.—when the passengers will again take the
cars, arriving at Savannah tbe next evening
at a quarter to eight." A first rate arrange
ment.
Gen. Grant for President.—Speaker Col
fax, in addressing the miners of Nevada, said:
“And above ell. let us remember that man
who stands chief amongst them, modest and
unassuming, and yet as inflexible and persis
tent as mortal man can be—our Lieutenant-
General, Ulysses S. Grant-(tremendous cheer
ing)—worthy a place in all your hearts ; fits
ted to grace, as I believe he will, the first
chair in the Republic of the United States. )
Orders have been issued to . Col. AUi.
son, Quartermaster of Chicago, to prepare
the Camp Douglas property for sale at auc
tion. The camp will be immediately evacu
ated as a military post.

A traveling citizen of the City of Roc L
sends from Niagara Falls tho following star
ling dispatch to the Nashville press:
‘‘Leslie, the great American Blondin, walk
ed across, Niagra Falls yesterday afternoon
on a rope, in a peach basket, and returned
with two pails of water. Gen. Grant was
present.”
All Colored Troops to re Mustered Out
the Regular Army.—There is good authori
ty for stating says a Washington dispatch
that all the colored troops now in the service
are soon to be mustered out. The idea that
they would be retained as a part of the regu
lar army is erroneous. They form simply a
provisional Corps, which will be discontinued
within a few months.
DIKD.’
BAUGH—Departed this life, in this city, on tbe Ist
ingt., Mrs G. E. Baugh. The deceased was an enthu
siastic and active member of the Methodist Church from
her girlhood. She di d as the had lived, a consistent
Christian, and fell asleep in the arms of Jesus.
“If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so
them also that sleep in Jesus will God bring with /iim.”
