A Spartan Magistrate.—Now that the City
Council ot Atlanta has supplied itself with a
t>ew Chief Marshal we hope to see some refo m
ni de made io our police system. At present
i is rather a poor institution. We c< mm> n 1
to the consideration of Mayor Calh'un the fol

sy’h. of Mobile, to the police in that city.
■As Mayor I only know you as members ot
the police. My likes and d'sbkes will have no
weight in my discharge ot the duty. Where I
ft ' I a faitbtul officer he is my man, whether
friend or foe ; when Ift id one guilty of mal«

head off without a m iment's hesitation, though

price of it. The dealer told him it was al
ready sold. Ho said be bad as good a right
to it as any one else, and walked off with it.
He was followed some distance by the owner
of the melons who told him if be intended to

back to bi* wagon io double quick time. Here
tue guards interfered, returned the melon to
its owner, arrested the arbitrary individual
and marched him off to the city Hall. He
will be dealt with.
Cottos Holders and Ownibs.—Those bold
