DAILY NEW ERA.
A. R. WATSON LOCAL EDITOR.
City Tax,—We would again suggest to the
people the immediate necessity of going for
ward and paying their City tax forthwith
Council, in levying a tax upon the people, act
ed with the utmo-t discretion. The circum
stances by which the people were surrounded,
were duly considered, > nd as light a tax as
would possibly subserve Council in carry,
jug on tie City Government was levied. But
light as the taxes are, they would afford thi
City antph pecuniary relief, if the people
Would go forward and pay at once.
It is useless for us to recount the uses the
city has for tunds al preseut. Wo have done
it time aud again, and the facts are as well
known to the people at large as to ourselves ;
and while the people manifest such a culpa
ble dereliction in the discharge of this im
portant and unavoidable duty, they are by
bo means cl* y of their .tbuse toward the C ty
Government tor not providing fur their con
venience as becomes the government of a
prosperous municipality.
Now we would ask the people to quit vi
tuperating against every city official until
they have discharged their own obligations
to the City.
The issue of cbangebills made sometime
since by the City, was for the purpose of an
ticipating taxes, and they are now receivable
for all City dues, and if the merchants would
consent to use them as was designed, in the
payment of their just taxes, we would see no
placards stuck up in stores as we now do : I
“ City scrip not taken tor goods.” There is :
but a small amount of these bills in circula- :
lion, and the tax receipts will call in the
whole and much more if paid promptly.
Tallulah.—A meeting of Tullulah Fire
Co., No. 8, is called for this evening at 8 '
o’clock.
We hope it is for the purpose of having the ’
company fully organized, the engine put in '
repairand general preparations made for light
ing the fire demon in future. This machine, in
past days, was the best one in the City, and
as it is the only one now here, it is necessary
to have it in working order at the earliest
practicable day.
In mention ng this engiue we are reminds
ed that the opening of Broad street takes the
whole of tbs lot on which this company’s en
gine bouse stood. Os course the city will
have to replace the lot with another as eligi
ble, and it has been suggested that in the ,
centre of Marietta street is the best location
for it. We mention the matter that the city
authorities may think it over, suggesting at
the same time that it is necessary that it be
located as near the old stand as possible, as
an engine is needed in that quarter of the
city.
Bab Rooms.—Once more we remind the
k- ignts of the demjohn and decanter, that
they now have the privilege of taking out
regular city.license tor the retail of ginslings
and cocktails. We understand that oniy a
limited number of such institutions will be
licensed by the ci y, or countenanced by the
military authorities ; then it is evidently to
the interest of those who wish to carry on
the traffic to apply at once to the clerk and
get their lieewae.
The matter is now wholly in the hands of
city authorities and if permits are not taken
out within in a reasonable time the fines wit)
be down on them like a thousand of brick, and
they w 11 have to dump more “ rocks” from
their pocket than two or three pair of licenses
would cost Whenever a delinquent is caught
we would say to the Mayor “ Lay on McDuff.”
To Our Bkadxkb. —lt is exceedingly morti
fying to us to be able to furnish so little read
ing matter to our readei-; tut the tremen
dous pressure of advertising patronage—for
which we are more than gra'elul to cur friends;
foic?s us for the present to give only an epi
tome of the news < f the day. We have arrange
m*nts on foot, however, wt>ich will be early
conrummated, ai d wbiCb will rff >rd us ample
means to cater to ibe tastes of all our readers.
Till that is consummated we must beg our read
ers to be rs lenient w ib ns as possib e, and
while, the, quantity ot reading matter is very
lim ted we will try to have no complaint as to
l«e quality.
Mr. Stfpuknh’ Health. We are permitted
to make exract from a letter fiorn Mr. Steph
ens to bis relative, S ter fl A. G. Grier of this
city. The beerta of the people, while they will
r<juice to know that he is improving in health,
will mourn that be. who would now be a host
among u< in the great woik ol re-organix ition,
i- pining to be rn e m >re at work among bis
in> nds in b s native 8 «■*.
In concluding Ms letter be says: "I am a great
deal better in health than when I wrote to yon
last. My elease from confinement, did me great
good, and since that I nave been put in much
more comfortable quartets. lam now getting
along very well ; out lai gunge cannot express
how earnestly I desi'e to be at home.”
—
Movifco—A regular caravan of drays
moved out from the Georgia Depot yesterday
morning loaded with household and kitchen
furniture. We had thought that the city was
already so full of people that there was room
in the bouses Air uo more ; but still they come
singly, io squads, platoons aud almost in reg
iments. We hope they wont get too thick to
stir around in this stirring city.
