DAILY NEW ERA.
A. R. WATSONLOCAL EpfTOR.
Warm After the cool interval we enjoyed
last week, the weather has undergone a
change and is now worthy the best a July
sun can do. It has been very hot—swelteting
sultry. Scarcely a breath of wind plays
about among the trees, or flits into a fellow's
no trils. There has been a great rise in real
estate —in the form of dust—So dry is it that
Some persons are fearful—lest a wind rise
and blow their plantations away.
The weather seems to be like a great many
of our people— out of change. Last night
the moon rose red, and bad the appearance
of being a great iron ball, bested to a glow,
hung in the heavens. To the weather
wise this is said to indicate weather ths t will
rack the bones of rheumatics, as it tokens an
ou'pouriug from the pregnant clouds. “So
mote it bo” at as early a day as will suit the
convenience of the weather cock. We are
anxious to see the shad on the steeple turn
bis tail to the west, that be may suck through
his gills the moisture that rides upon the back
of th*east wind. The old flsh must be thirs
ty by this time, as be has been a tish out of
water for a long while ; yet be has given no
evidence of uneasiness; on the contrary he
has reseed as quietly upon his perch as if the
clouds were favorably pouring out upon him
copious showira of bis aquatic element.
Sharp Disc .umixation. -A day or two si> e
a man went luto a store on Whitehall alrte . I
and in trading with the merchant saw fit to I -
c m- eo allusive and insulting that the mer -
chant proposed to chastise him and would
have done s > if the coward had not backed
out. Deieim ned to have some revenge on the
merchant the fellow went eff and procured a
squad ot coloiel troops und-r the command ot
a colored Sergeant and went back to the s'ore
to have the merchant arrested. On reachii g
the store it w s found to be closed, but by
knocking they found that some one was within,
admission was demanded and granted, and the
particulars was stated to the Sergeant com
manding the sq lad. Hiving beard the whole
case be turned to his men and said •’ boys we
have nothing to do with this case, it belongs to
the civil cuthortties’. The m >ral of this little
episode is that the regro has acuteness enough
to discriminate between the prerogatives of the
civil aud military. We suppose the burly cus
tomer must have felt swamped.
Arrest.—An evening or two since we saw a
horse led by a stout Ethiopian and surrounded
by a guard pursuing its way toward the City
Ball under arrest. We suppose the owner of
the horse was going along to see that it bad a
proper bearing, as he was aboard the an mal.
We heard it stated afterwards that the horse
was too drunk to tote the min—at least that
was the supposition, as the man had evidently
great difficulty in keeping bis seat. Tnat hoise
ought to be fed tor a week on shoe peg oats.
Asotheb Richmond.—Messrs. Finney- &
Winter announce this morning that they have
opened a new stock of Drugs at their store on
Marietta street, second door from Kile’s build
ing.
They have on band a splendid assortment of
Drugs, Medicines, Paints, Oils, Dye Stuffs, in
fact every thing that may be found in a well
regulated establishment of that kind. We
unite particular attention to their advertise

Nbw Book stork.—lt affords us great
pleasure to announce that our old friends M.
Lynch A Co., are at their old staud with a
magnificent assortment of School and mis
cellaneous Books, Stationery and fancy arti
cle* of all kinds. These merchants are well

years been prominent in their line of business.
We invite public attention to their stand on
Whitehall sireet, near the Railroad.
High Price For a Cow. —Ai the auction of
Dr. Harry W. Brown on Tuesday last a moo y
cow was sold for three hundred anl thirty dol
lars. Our neighb t J ired I. Woi'aker. of the
InleUijen er was the purchxs r. We regard
that as infallible evidence of Ihe prosperny of
bis Journal, now the largest, in the S ate.
News and Variety.—We call attention to
the card of basseen & Henderso..’* New and

Geo. Saiteen and Henderson are polite
and affable young gentlemen, and we are will,
ing to guarantee the public satisfaction as of

minister to all the wants of our citizens. He
has now a Lumber yard on the corner of
Mitebell and Forsyth streets, where be keeps
all kinds of lumber for sale as low as anybody
else can sell it.
