DAILY NEW ERA.
A. R. WATSON LOCAL EDITOR.
Atlanta Midical. Collbgk—By referent e
to our advertising columns, a notice, from Dr.
J. G. Westmorelnnd, Deau of the above
mentianed institution, will be found which
announces the re-opening of the regular ex.
ercises of this College on the First Monday in
November. These exercises, which were con
ducted with a great deal of success prior to
the breaking out of the war, were suspended
in 1861, and since, the building has been
used for hospital purposes. But now, that
the Faculty have determined upon resuming
we hope to see a large number of young men
in attendance, that the institution may Hours
isb as in days gone by.
The usual summer Session will be discon
tinued, and the Sessions will now comprise
four months, commencing with the first Mon
day in November.
We hope to see the College prosper and at
tain its former success in dispensing knowl
edge of the art curative.
In this connection, we must express our re
gret that the faculty is to be called upon to
part with one of its best and most useftD
members, Dr. Harry W. Brown, who goes
to Texas. Io losing him, the College loses
one of its beet professors, the City lo%es a
polished gentleman and a good citizen, and
the people lose the services of a good practi
tioner. We send our good wishes with him
wherever he may go;
Medical Collsgs of Gboroia—Augusta. —
We are happy to learn, says the Augusta
Constitutionalist, that this old and celebrated
institution will resume its career of useful
ness on the first Monday in November, and
thus afford to those who may desire to devote
themselves to the profession of medicine an
opportunity to get the necessary education
near home. The Faculty of the Augusta Med
icai College have earned for themselves and
their school an exalted reputation through,
out the United States, and before the war,
large classes annually flocked here to listen
to their instructions. We understand that
the prospects for a large class this fall are
very flattering and hope that they may be
fully realized. Those who are able to do so
ought to make arrangements to board the
siudents on reasonable terms ; for the greater
facilities offered them the greater will be their
numbers, and the larger amount of capital
brought into our city.
The advortisement of this institution ap
pears in the Era, to which we call the atten
tion of our readers.
A few woBDd to Tax PAYERS.—It is an un
fortunate fact, that Atlanta, with all its advan
tages, is possessed of less comeliness of appear
ance than any other city in Georgia. This
misfortune may have arisen, prior to the war,
from a lack of sufficient enetgy to beautify the
streets, erect public buildings, and to give us a
sufficient number of parks, to induce tbe citi
z-ns to make them places of summer resort.—
At tbe time there was a want of energy, the
city bad a sufficiency oi funds for tbe purpose,
but now that we have a city council possessed
of tbe requisite brains to devise and skill to
execute, Atlanta still suffers from the apathy
exhibited by tbe people. Notwi'hstanding tbe
very moderate tax levied on our citize s, only
a very email amount has, as yet, been paid. In
tbe meantime the city authorities are compelled
to remain idle tor tbe want of tbe necessary
funds to pay for the improvements and repairs
bo mucb needed by tbe city. This should not
be. Tbe tax payers of Atlanta can and Bpoaid
pay the city tuxes without being reminded of
their duty. If tbe authorities are placed n
possession of tbe requisite funds, tbe mat y

Rev. Dr. Qcintard.-The friends of this em

■ qualified to adorn. He bas been made Bishop

iDr. Quinta.d is welt known to our communi
ty as the pastor of St. Luke’s parish. His pol
ished demeanor as a gentleman and abilities as
an “Ambassador of peace” won largely upon
the hearts of tbe people.
We wish the Doctor abnnd' nt fruits in his
new and more extended fi-Id ot labor. He is
calculated to do an immense amount of good in
any community in which be is called upon to
labor.

Appeal for the South.— Archbithop Spa -
ding bas issued a circular enjoining that a
collection be taken np in all the Roman Caths
olic Churches of the Archdiocese of Balti

tbe benefit of our suffering people of the
South. The Archbishop says that the dis
tress in the S mth is “ both widespread and
appalling, far too gigantic to be adequately
relieved by individual subscriptions,” and
that “ most of the sufferers are women, chil
dren, and ouber-noncoinbntants.” He also
states that. “ in n any localities the popula

down-right starvation during tbe approaci i tg
