MT* The Atlanta Dramatic Assecia*
tion explains its object in the following
extract from the by-laws.
At a meeting of the Atlanta Dramatic ,
Association held on Monday evening,
IMi inst., it was resolved, to publish in
each of the city papers, so much of the
By-Laws of said Association as per
tains to the object of it.
The Object of the Association.
This Association is for the mutual in
struction of the members thereof, and '
for the purpose of raising a fund for the [
poor and needy of our city, wjio arc de- ,
pendent upon the cold charities of the
world for their daily bread. The con- j
dition of the poor women and children !
appeals to us, and not only to us, but
to a generous public for assistance. — j
Our object is therefore to raise the means
by which we may in some degree Arne- !
liorate their sufferings and assist as
far at in our p >wi r, to protect the poor,
of eur city from the poking storms and
pangs of hunger.
After adopting tbe By-Laws, the foK
lowing officers were elected:
T. AT. Dermott, Manager J. G.
B.inios, Stage Manager; M. J. Coffe r ,
Treasur r; E. T. Plummer, Secretary;
J. D. Collins, Property-man ; G. W-
Grain, Sceneic Artist and Wm. Clark,
Leader of Orchestra.
Tne Association is making rapid prep
arations for the first perfotmancee. The
difficulties to be met and overcome will
prob»bly delay them some weeks, The
great difficulty has been in getting a
hall. There is none suitable in the ofa
ty, so the only alternative left the com
pany is to tecure one that is large
enough and then fit it up with stage,
scenery, lights, seats <fec. This will in
volve a good deal of expense, but the
Company are determined to persevere
and they will finally succeed. We hope
they will meet with liberal encourage
ment at the hands of the citizens. The
enterprise is not for to-day; but it is in
tended to be permanent, and will un»
donbtedly secure a vast amount of good
to the poor of the city
Nation, which is one of the
most prominent of the radical organs, is
obliged, by the logic of events, to con*
cede that the southern people are not
all heathenish enough to operate against
wUat is manifestly to their interest. A
late number of this journal says: “Ac*
cording to the latest .ad vices from Gen. s
Tillson, the people of Georgia, who gen- f
erally at first were strongly opposed to 1
giving reasonable wages, now, influ- j
enced by the judicious course 'of the j
Bureau, are exhibiting much greater
readiness to pay the freed people fair
wages, while many of them declare that
their prospects were never so good, be
fore, and that the freed people are
doing admirably.
“From Mississippi we receive she in
telligence that the disproportion be
tween the demand for labor and the
supply ensures the freedmen a good
price for all they do, and makes them
quite independent. To meet the de
mand'tor labor in the Mississippi bot-
- toms large numbers of laborers have
been transported from the interior and
poorer parts of the State to the rich
lands, where they will be well treated,
fed, and paid by kind employers ”
The Nation, however, is not fully
satisfied with affairs in Virginia and
Alabama. Thinks the military will be
needed a while longer to assist the
Bureau in the administration of its af
fairs.
{tg“We are in receipt of No. 12 of
the Daily National £snon, a new paper
recently started in Cincinnati. In ad
dition to filling all the legitimate offices
of a newspaporial life, it has, in connec
tion, established what it designates a
‘ Literary Bureau” which proposes to
furnish amatory verses to love-sick
swains, valentines for school-boys and
m'sses, love letters for all who have not
sense, enough to write them, lectures to
be read by num-skulls, epithalamiums,
epitaphs, eulogies, obituaries, &c. If
any of our friends want to -ee how
their obituaries look beforehand they
have only to address the editor. This
se-ins to us to be something new in the
routine of daily newspaperdom.
gsgv- In passing along Washington
street yesterday, we saw an individual
woo appeared somewhat dilapidated.—
His face was a shapeless mase, the dom
inant characteristic of which was blood.
We concluded that he had gotten pretty
badly tangled in the briars—or fists.

1 A Picture Excitement at the Mew
York Hotel.
A picture of Gdn Lee having Teen
hung up in the reading room of the New
York Hotel, kept by Hiram Crausti n,
the following appeared in a leading
journal:
To the Editor of the Evening Post:
The friends and admirers of Robert E.
Leo, late Genen.l io command of the ar
mies in rebellion against the United
States Government, are informed that the
proprietors of the New York Hotel have
placed in their reading room his portrait
for exhibition. In order to give a con •
spiettous place, the portrait of President
Washington had to be removed. It is
presumed that the public will see
the propriety of the change when they
take into consideration the services of
the two .men, ‘‘CHIVALRY.”
Mr. Cranston has hung the above note
beneath the picture of Gen. Lee, and ap
pended the following admirable reply:
The writer of the above appears to
have been much exercised at the picture
ot Gen, Lee hanging in the public room
of this hotel. His statement that the
picture of the famous Virginian, General
Washington, was retnov ed to give place
to that of Gen. Lee, Is false. The room
was cleared of all pictures and waps for
the parpose of papering walls, and no
picture had been replaced, as thuy were
being cleaned. The likeness of Gen.
was placed there, without my knowledge*
by some person who offered it for sale.
As “Chivalry” doubtless* represents
sum doughty hero, who manceuvrcd
around Norfolk and bottled up Butler
and has more spoons, pianos, etc., than
qualities that constitute a noble, chival
rous hero, I allow him to pass, with the
mantle of glory gained by attacking a
picture.

A Slight Mistake.
A good joke i.i told on one of the
Brooklyn Brigadiers. Brigadier Gen
eral S , early in the war was sta-
tioned in Not th Carolina with a brigade
under him, and as he was one of those
mushroom commanders whom the stress
of civil war bad called up from civil
life, he naturally enough entrusted the
routine duty and drilling of the men to
a Major detailed for that purpose. One
day S 's superior in command made
an inspection, after which he bluntly
told the Brigadier that the men were not
sufficiently up in tactics and manual.
S : summoned the Major, questioned
him and hintsd that he was not doing
his duty, and finally, as a test ques
tion, if in the event of a fight the bri
gade should capture a number of pri
soners, what he should do with them?
The Major replied to the effect that
he should get them to the rear and if
possible to Washington.
“There you are all wrong. This
book/’ handing him Scott’s Infantry
Tactics, “says that prisoners should be
placed fifty’ paces on the right—in
front.”
The Major protested against this, and
finally urged by his superior, took the
volume to his quarters to read.—
Tiie next morning he met tbe General,
and stated that nowhere in tbe volume
could be find it down that prisoners
should be placed on the right.
General impatiently seized upon
the volume, and pounced upon a pass
age which he read to himself, and then
looked up with a puzzled air, ejaculat
ing:
“Oh, hell, it’s pioneers!"
Ti.e Major turned on his heel reflect*
ing that pioneers did really belong
where the General had placed them.—

A Powerful Letter.
An elderly lady and gentleman were
riding a few days ago in an omnibus.
Opposite to them vat a peasant looking'
young lady, with a fine, noble, chubby,
growjng, bully of a boy in her lap. Con
versation arose between the parties. A
steamship from Ghagrea had just arrived,
and the good looking lady, with the
chubby juvenile, wished to know the
news, remarking that her husband had
been away fifteen mouths that day, and
she was very anxious to hear from him.
And then the good looking lady proceed
ed to indulge in a long and pathetic dis
sertation on the discomfort and annoyanc
es of wives when husbands go off and
stay so long from their homes.
“True, madam,” remarked the elderly
gentleman, who had never known the
pride and pleasure of paternity; “but,
then, tiiat fine little fellow must be great
pleasure and comfort to you,” chucking
at the same time the jolly litth fellow
under the chin, who crowed, and swelled,
and stared at the old gentleman’s specta
cles; “a remarkab’y fine boy. What
may be his age, madam?”
“Just three months, sir,’’ replied the
proud young mother. .
“Three months!” replied the elderly
lady, “three months! 1 thought you
aaid your husband had been away
months. ’
The good looking lady blushed very
deeply, but soon recovering tho moment*
ary confusion, and remembering herself,
she ejaculated, “Oh, but he has writ
once.” '
Murder of an Old Citizen.— Beyond
any doubt, the most terriblejtragedy ev
er,enacted ini this community took place
on Friday night last. Mr. Charles A.
Clapp, one of our oldest and most re
spected ci iz' ns was foully murdered at
his resident*, ab ut one mile from the
city, between the hours of nine and ten
o’clock, while lying asleep in his bed.
There issome little mystery connected
with t ils horrib’o affair find a thousand
rtnr.or i in circulation. The police
an-actively engaged in ferriting outtm
guilty parties, and as the matter wii
soon undergo an investigation, we foi
1 ear comment. Justice and humanity
alike demand that speedy and stern, ac
tion should betaken in this affair. The
whole community is shocked at the per
petration of this savage and cold-blood
ed deed, and demand that the guilty
ones shall be brought to justice.
Charlie Clapp was a good and true
n an, and was a hard-working, enter
prising citizen. He was a builder and
contractor, and the city is indebted to
him f r many of her improvements. —
May tie rest in peace. The funeral we
learn will t ike place this morning
