Notice.
The firm Df I’hi'ips & Prather was dis
eelved on the 25th instant. The bu
siness of the firm will bo settled by me,
st the Kile building. J. S. Drathur.
®qF“ About ten o’clock on Tuesday
night the gjarin of fire was given. A
fire had broken out in the wooden build
ings on the corner of Whitehall and
Decatur streets. Tho buildings, con
taining five stores, were consumed, 'ihe
clothing store of Messrs. Thompson &
Jourdan was burned. Most of the goods,
however, were saved. A confectionary,
the gift establishment Ou the corner, a
provision store and the store of Messrs.
Folsom & Joiner wore all destroyed.—
Most of the gentlemen sustained serious
loss.
I By the most strenous efforts the stores
of Messrs. Salmons, Simmons & Co.,and
< F. Hagan i Co., were saved,
There was some insurance on the j
property destroyed, but not enough to
i, fully indemnify the owners.
I There being no fire engines in work
ing order, the fire had its own way pret
ty much. Every one present worked
manfully in saving goods or carrying
water in buckets.
We regret to learn that there was a
k Considerable amount of stealing Jone.
Some losing more in this way than
they did by the fire.
.Frank Rice, who had a brokers oilice
in the corner building succeeded in sav
ing his safe.
We hope that not many more fires i
grill occur before the city Council I c
|ins to feel the necessity of doing
lomething toward putting the fire eu
;incs in working order. We have here
tune two or three engines which acorn
aratively small amount of in ney
'ould put in order. One or two
f them merely need hose. Another one
eeds a hose carriage. We think the i
ity fathers have appreciation enough
o know that we need some protection
torn fire. Then why in the name of
tomraon sense are they not doing some
thing toward this end. We have now 1
no guaranty for the safety of our prop.- •
erty. A fire breaking out in some-of j
the wooden buildings on Whitehall *
street would endanger the buildings on
the whole street. There are about enough
Wooden buildings in the city to make
one magnificent bonfire of the whole,
■when a favorable opportunity offers, and
one will offer sooner or later unless \
some precautionary measures are taken.
What will Council do with the matter ’
Mr. J. P. Buckner, of the firm of
Wellfl & Buckner, Louisville, made us a
eall yesterday. We reckon Mr. Buckner
among our most pleasant acquaintances.
He is a partner of one of the largest
liquor houses in the West, and has sold
an immense quantity of the ardent in
this country. All who have heretofore
had dealings with this firm will j in us
in pronouncing them most straightfor
ward and correct in their transactions.
We commend Mr. B. to the kindly e u

JtaT* The building on the corner of
Whitehall and Decatur streets, which
was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night,
had a certain amount of insurance on it.
The fire occurred about ten o’clock at
night, and by ten o’clock next morning
the insurance money was paid by Maj.
John C. Whitner, Insurance Agent at
this place. Thia exhibits a degree of ■
promptness which does not often occur.
We get this information from the owner
of the building.

For nearly a century we have delighted I

cause of the fight is supposed to have
been too much nigger on each sight
They went at it right manfully, and
made the wool fly promiscuously. They
made rents in each others face- with
all the savagery of a wild cat; in fact
there was very little black on their fa
