j®“ The tribunal where the Mayor

was not ci owded to excess
yesterday. The few cas es that were of
minor importance. The • burden of the
docket was

especially within the lin tits of the mag
ic circle describing the boundary of the
jurisdiction of his Honor. It is being
fairly proven that said Jurisdiction ex
tends not only to within fifty-feet of the
line of demarcation, but in reality up to
the very line, and every shot fired ins
side is worth five dollars to the city, and
five dollars the city will have- We have
been astonished at the number of cases
ofthiskind that are being- brought up.—
One would think that the experience of
others would serve as a teacher some
times; but in this case it, seems not so,
•ndjthe people gb popping away at every
little innocent bird that hops within
gunshot, and then the Mayor pops
away at them to the tune of five dol
lars and cost, which usually rears it up
to nearly a full grown Eagle. But the
offenders pop pop down the greenbacks,
and receive the injunction of His Honor
to go and shoot no more.
Ou yesterday A. G. Chisolm, Geo-
Mclntosh, J. Austin, Chas. Sheppern
and J. L. Griffin wore fined $5 each,
and costs sot shooting where they had’nt
ought to sboot.
Perry Johnson and Francis Brady got
to brandy-smashing each other; at least
Johnson seemed inclined to impose upon
Brady, but Brady, according to iestimo
ny, “lived in fear” of Johnson, and con
sequently got too far out of reach to
admit of a fight. But Johnson acted
very badly in the affair. He was a
“bully boy” generally, and a naughty
boy, especially, in this case. His Honor
thought so and set him down for
twenty dollars or ten days, and left the
matter optional with Johnson. The
incontrovertible logic of impicunious
circumstances caused him to accept the
alternation-t-ten days in Caliboose.
Ann Buckley Was ’charged ten dol
lars for elevating her alfactory organ at
his Honor’s greeting, and request to
wait on his tribunal.
Wm. Horton was fined ten dollars
for non-appearance to answer a few
little charges which stand “foremost” ■
his nome on the city’s judical calender. ]
The court then adjourned. ,
Beadle & Co., of “Dime Novel”
wealth and notoriety, is publishing a yel- j
low-backed monthly magazine. The
March number is before us—a very poor
number of a very poor magazine. It is
worthy, however, of the establishment
which for years has been vomiting out
floods of pernicious trash, to corrupt the
taste and morals of its readers, which i
Were found chiefly among the young.
The magazine is no better. Its litera
ry merit is considerably below par. The
articles are clumsily written. The po
ems do not come up to the average stand
ard of newspaper doggerel, and the illus
trations are mere caricatures, being print
ed, we judge, from the worn-out plates
of other establishments.
We have seen no magazine lately
which comes farther short of what a
magazine should be than this one does.
It seems to have lost sight of, or has not
aimed at, the high prerogative of maga
zines—the inculcation and fostering of a
pure circulating literature; but is evi
dently liming to get up something that
will sell. Unless tho proprietors make
some radical changes, there is little hope
that their monthly will ever attain to the
popularity which has been awarded to
Harpers Monthly, the Atlantic, and
some few others There have the ad
vantage of excellet t execution, at least,
and in this Beadle & Co. have failed.
The March number of this magazine
may be had at Crew’s Agency, on Mari
etta street.
Flour is an item in domestic
economy which it were wise not to
overlook. If you want to preserve the
cook’s temper and have your meals well
prepared, give her a good article of
flour. She has no use for flour which
requires a jackscrew to enable it to
rise; but she wants that article which,
in obedience to its duty, will make a
good white loaf, without going beyond
the ordinary method of prepartion, to
coax it into the required shape.
Among the many brands of flour now
in this market, there is none better
adapted to family use than the “Ortho
dox.” It is an excellent article as has
been declared by all who have used it.
Some of the hotels and boarding houses
in the city have given it a fair trial, and
are fully satisfied of its merits —so ful
ly that none other is considered good
enough to supply its place. It is for
sale by Messrs. M. E. Bell & Co., and by
r ’ tl e chief flour dealers in the city. Give
it one trial.
&&-E. C. Murphy & Co., are doing a
lively business on Marietta
street. They have everything in the
family way, which they furnish as low
as can be bought elsewhere, and it is
always fresh and good.
