The meeting of loyal citizens, irres pective of party, which has been called for the 22d, at Grover’s Theatre, to en dorse the restoration policy of'President Johnson, promises to be a dernonstraw tion uncomuionly imposing, whether in respect, to numbers or the lofty nation a i-m, unselfish liberality, or fervent pat re tsm of motive which inspire the zeal, so apparent y< sterday, and which will be redoubled to -day, among g<*n tl men ol piominence hitherto ass < i a ted wit . the several parties, and with even greater enthusiasm among the mas ses of every class of our local nopula ti ». The Baltimore Press on the Veto Message. The American withholds any opinion, in consequence of the lat>*ness of the hour in receiving the Message. The Commercial publishes the nies* Bsgt>. b it s,ys nothing. foe Gazette (secession organ) rejoices over the I’lesident’s firmness and his veto, and says : We arc sure the people of Man land and the conservative and law-abiding people of eviry section of the countty will heartily end rse ihe tues a<e wli ch the Pies dent has sent to the Senate, and in which he has given rea.-ons that have constrained him to ve to the Freedm-n’s Bureau bill lbs ai gument is irresistible, and the spirit and temper of the message are admirable.— lie is standing her up -n firm ground in this matter, and he will be sustained by the American people from Maine to Mexico, if he will but call them to the rescue of tle Constitution and laws.— I’hey at e weary of the radicalism i.nd self-.-eeking detnago > tiism of these lat ter days ; they want the freedom, secu rity and peace that they once enj yed, and tin y will follow any man who labors to restore to them these inestimable bles-dr.gs They are as yet troubled, be cause they cat,not see whither they arc tending; but if Mr. Johnson would but uplift the banner of constitutional law and civil freedom, and carry it unflinch ingly to the front, he would find that he lias a nation by bis side. The Sun c dis it the monstrous Freed* men’s Bureau bill, and then simply re f rs to the President’s reasons for veto ing it- The Evening Transcript approves of it. The Wecher (Gen. Sigel’s paper) con demns the veto message. Anncdote of Sidney Johnston.— “M. W. M.” says an 'exchange, sends i g the following anecdote of the late Gen eral Sidney Johnston : “While Sidney Johnston resided <xn Oyster Creek, in Texas, he kept a tame Mexican lion, of which be was very fond, and which followed him everywhere like a dog. One day, while at dinner witli General Lunar and Rev. Mr. Fontaine, he was feeding him with p-eces of meat, and happening to give film a rare slice, with blood dr pping from it, the lion seized the hand that field it, crushing i', aid growth g fiercely, with angry ey ■ fixed on his master. General Johnston without a cry of pain or a single move meat, looked steadily at him, and said quietly several times, ‘‘Let go, Dan.’ But the •nitnal only growled and lahed Ins ta I, when, turning to a servant, th(j- General told him to hand his piffti-S M « which the frightened negro dd, aitl General Johnston taking it. in his kit hand, blew out the lion’s brains, bit hand was hopele. sly maimed.” Newspaper Substitute*.— The New York Nation says that tn Italy, where the Government exercises acer am control over the press, it is the custom for each journal to maintain a stout laboi irfg man, who, for a stipulated salary, consents to be cast into prison in atonement for such, offences as the journal may commit. Colisi quently this holiest fellow spends half hi.s days in arre-t; the journalists pay the tines and write what they please.
