Western Texas in 1860 and 1866.—We
would call attention to th ■ prospects ahead
of us, by comparing the relative degree of
prosperity we enjoyed before tbe late war and
wbat we may reasonably expect within the
lapse of tbe current year. In 1860 tbe amount
of cotton raised West of the Colorado river,
which found its outlet through this bay, did
not exceed tn value $1,250,000; the value of
Wool and bides did not exceed $150,000 ; and
we sold abroad about $600,000 of oeef cattle
altogether two millions of dollars. This
year we estim ite that there will be 8,000 bales
of cotton raised in the same territory as 18G0
worth $1,600 000. The value of beef cattle
exported and sold above the home consump

for S3OO was filled up, the signature of the
firm appended, and then presented to the
paying teller of the Central National Bank,
at the cwrni-r of Broadway and Pearl street,
on the afternoon of the 19th ult., by .young
Cannon. Supposing that he was still in
the employ of Jones, Smith & Sheppard, tbe

Krnboldemd ny’heir success, the boys filled

young Cannon presented it nt the bank for
payment. Thi*, too, waa unhesitatingly

As Cannon emergi d from the bank on tbe
second occasion, be was met by two men, who
ordered him to come with them. Feeling
guilty, and believing them to be detectives,
Cannon followed them without saying a word.

him the $3 000, and r< turning him SIOO, hur
ried off. Os course the boy did not dare to
raise an alarm.
On tbe following day another check for
$4 000 was presented at the bank by another
of the party named James Mitchell, Cannon
fearing that be might be recognized and ars
rested if he again went to tbe bank. On this
occasion the check was received by Mr W.
H. Sanford, tha assistant cashier. He at once
pronounced it a forgery. Mitchell was ta
ken inter the back office, and Detectives Ead«
ford and Kelso sent for. They took the boy
into custody, and from statements made by
him, were soon enabled to arrest Cannon.
The detectives, assisted by detective Irving
of the Twentieth Precinct, arrested John Ca
sey, tbe keeper of a saloon on the West side
of the city, and a youth named Alexander
Grav The lai ter is the messenger who pro
cured the check book from tbe printer, while
Casey is believed, in addition to he concerned
in tbe forgery, to have been instrumental in
causing the robbery of Cannon on tbe occa
sion alluded to
Justice Hogan committed all the prisoners
for examination.
Cannon and Mitchell have for some time
past belonged to an organization known as
“ Converse Club/’ having its headquarters at
the “ Metamora” saloon in tbe Ninth avenue,
near Twenty*fifth street. It is composed of
young men who live rather fast lives, and in
this respect tbe accused have not been behind
their fellows. *V. K Times.
